Maple Leafs 2 v. Sabres 3: PK Perfection

Join the Game Thread

The Toronto Maple Leafs picked up more useless moral victories in Buffalo tonight. They fired almost 80 shots at Ryan Miller (12 blocked, 17 missed the net), competed much better, drew penalties with their hard work, and looked poised to start off the game in the best way possible. Many of the shots were not from trouble areas but many were and when they were the Leafs ran into a familiar nemesis. Ryan Miller now has 10 straight wins against the Leafs and has only allowed more than 2 goals once in that span.

Unfortunately, the Leafs' power play continues it's slide. The problems are numerous ranging from Beauchemin being unable to get his shots through to Kessel staying pinned to the half boards and getting the puck in an easily defended position to a lack of havoc in front of the opposition goalie.

Star-divide

The end result? Viktor Stalberg draws a double minor and the Leafs' PK gives up two goals. One more power play goal for the Sabres and the game was over. Tony Ambrogio tweeted that he thought that Tim Hunter was responsible for the penalty kill but it would be nice to have someone confirm. Bill Watters, hold on to your hats, made the good point that Ron Wilson has always had a great penalty kill which points more towards the players being the problem than the system. Jonathan Willis of The Score's Hockey or Die site had two good and relevant posts about coaches' not necessarily getting stupid overnight and about some steps that Phoenix's GM took to improve trouble areas for the team including the PK.

  • Viktor Stalberg showed good effort along the boards. His quick acceleration helped him win a lot of battles.
  • Luke Schenn was inspired tonight as he picked up two assist, was +2 in over 20 minutes and was named the game's 3rd star.
  • Phil Kessel responded well to Ron Wilson's challenge. He was stronger on the puck and put forth more effort than previous games.
  • Vesa Toskala did not lose the game. That doesn't seem like much until you remember that it's Vesa Toskala and you basically just witnessed a minor miracle.
  • I'd give you more stats but the NHL's stats/video engine has crashed. I guess it was tied to the Prudential Center's lighting power source.

Not that we expected the Leafs' to win in a city where the Toronto Maple Leafs have a record of 25 wins, 56 losses (including tonight), 6 ties, and 2 OT/SO losses while being outscored 349-229. However, it's a shame that the Leafs' much improved effort at even strength be torpedoed by special teams. To be honest, I'm at a loss as to what can be changed on the PP other than the personnel because even when they shift the approach the results have not improved. Needless to say, the same applies to the PK. The only real difference that ever has an impact: Jonas Gustavsson. This game certainly wasn't on Vesa Toskala by any stretch of the imagination but Jonas is a difference maker. Hopefully, he's ready for tomorrow night.

Update: David Olesky provides the Sabres' perspective on the game including Corsi and Fenwick numbers. Corsi looks at the difference in the total number of shots directed at an opponent's net, including blocked shots and missed shots, to those directed at the players' net while a player is on the ice. Fenwick doesn't include blocked shots. Two things stand out:

  1. The fourth line got absolutely killed. Colton Orr was a -8 and Jamal Mayers was a -11.
  2. Ian White, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Francois Beauchemin, and John Mitchell led the way as they were all in double digits.

A Tip of My Hat...

to Luke Schenn for a damn good game and a good bounce back from the embarrasment in PhIlly.

Yep.

Really good game for Schenner. I’m happy for him.

Okay

Now everyone go read the game story on The Star’s website, contrast it to this one, then tell me which game actually happened.

I’d know myself, but I gave up after the first to watch Star Trek (the J.J. Abrams remake).

The Star’s Recap

My game happened. It wasn’t the greatest but it was much improved throughout the game.

The local media smells blood so they are pouncing but to suggest that the first period was like any of their recent games (other than the terrible PK) is laughable.

I got four words into that and stopped.

Kevin McGran is better than that, or so I thought.

I Figured As Much

It was a good first period up until the Sabre’s powerplay – after that I knew the game was out of hand no matter how well they played, thus opting for Star Trek.

Good to see my boy had a goal and +1 tonight, he seems to be getting his touch back a bit.

Could you do a comparative on why Rickard Wallin is/isn’t a first line centre… then send it to RW?

Truth.

It sucks to lose again to Ryan Fucking Miller and the Sabres, but really, I thought this game had a lot in common with the two or three games immediately preceding the year’s first win in Anaheim – those games where the team was playing hard and doing everything but scoring, carrying the play and deserving a better fate – but still losing.

The PK does have to improve, and soon, or I think one of RW’s assistants will pay the price for it.

Exactly

They weren’t down 2-0 because they came out flat. They were down 2-0 because they figuratively couldn’t kill a penalty to save their lives. Actually, I bet they literally couldn’t depending on who the organizer had playing for the Leafs’ lives.

All I can say is this: I wouldn’t want to be one of the four guys on the ice for the literal “kill to save their lives.” You’d have a better chance of surviving a Dr. Kevorkian house call.

PPP has the advantage of not having a deadline. McGran is writing during the game and like most journalists has everything written up before the third with the room to make corrections. It is the reason many journalists love blowouts.

Scoring Chances for tonight's game

Scoring Chances vs Buffalo

At least they got a handful of chances on the PP, though hardly great ones, basically just some shots through traffic that got through. Five chances in 8 minutes isn’t that impressive, especially next to the 4 in 2:27 that the Sabres got during their PP time.

Schenn led the team in scoring-chance differential at even-strength tonight at +8, so it definitely was a very solid game for him.

Pretty depressing game until the 3rd period, where the Leafs at least made a game of it.

This is the bottom

I know it’s pretty bad right now, but here are our next 8 games:

Pittsburgh
Carolina
Philadelphia
@Washington
@Nashville
@Atlanta
@Tampa Bay
@Florida

Considering how we’ve done against Pittsburgh and Washington, this is where we make up ground. I see 12 points as a very realistic outcome out of these 8 games, and if we somehow made 14 out of this, we’d be at .500, and right in the playoff hunt again. That’s a tad wishful, but 12 points is realistic, and I’d be quite disappointed if we only managed 10 out of it.

Someone's got to have it, right?

Really though, when we were flying high in late November/early December, our schedule was pretty pedestrian. This recent slump has been against better teams. We’re not upper echelon, and I don’t think anyone here thinks that. We can hold our own against the bottom half of the league though (and sprinkle in Pittsburgh and Washington for reasons unknown, but accepted), and lucky for us, that’s who is coming up next.

It will balance out, but for now, the next few weeks could be pretty fun.

That’s a good argument. The Leafs don’t seem to have regular patches. It’s either good or terrible. They’re due and with Gustavsson healthy, Gunnarsson coming back, and maybe Schenn settling down they could be set.

I like this positivity.
The other thing to remember is that at the end of the day, wins and losses don’t mean shit this year, lottery pick be damned. We weren’t supposed to, and aren’t going to, win anything. It’s a development year. In that regard, Schenn is showing signs of coming around (poor game in Philly notwithstanding); I like that he’s regularly using a slapshot from the point now, and that he’s getting the shot through. Kulemin’s play over the last ten or fifteen games has been nothing short of stellar. Gustavsson has shown us reason to believe he can carry the load, assuming his ticker stays healthy. Those things are all positives.

With everything going to shit

(as certain people would want yo to believe), the positives have been badly overlooked.

- As noted, Kulemin is one of our most consistent forwards. The numbers don’t exactly show it, but the effort is there.
- Tonight was a perfect example of Schenn improving his game. His shot has improved, and he’s playing better (Philly game aside)
- Gunnarsson is a promising defensive prospect, and I hope he continues to show the levels of promise that he did prior to his unfortunate injury.
- Kadri is playing with emotion, and could pan out into the next Darcy Tucker for the Leafs.

It’s important to look at the positives, and not kill ourselves with negativity.

- Kadri with 4 assists last night in London. That’s nice to see from him.

Get in the trenches bro’. That’s where Leafs fans need to defend themselves to the death. And I do – often. Love it. Combat is fun. Combat when you have right and might on your side is even more fun. Four conference final appearances since ‘93. 13 Cups. Second most of any team ever. Most successful playoff franchise since ’93. Stop crappin’ on the Leafs is my constant message to these pukes. What region of the world produces more hockey talent than any other? The GTA and a little beyond. Hockeytown is Toronto. The Mecca or perhaps the Medina.
