Hey everyone, I was just thinking about the possibility of the Leafs picking up Sheldon Souray off re-entry waivers.
I know, I know.. it 99% will not happen, but just hear me out. The Leafs would only be on the hook for half of his cap hit (5.4) which would translate to 2.7 mil, but theyd only have to pay around 2.3ish because hes owed less than his cap hit for the remaining years (Not that it matters to the Leafs).
If they were to do this, they would get another big, physical, puck moving defenseman with a rocket of a shot (Not too mention 50+ point potential if healthy) with a 2.7 mil cap hit. I would gladly lose Francois Beauchemin, or Mike Komisarek and their higher cap hits for Souray. Although I'm well aware that Burke would probably not want to trade them after recruiting them last summer. Luke Schenn, Dion Phaneuf are clearly safe, Tomas Kaberle would be the best trade bait and most realistic choice to go, but as we all know, he has a NTC. But, even if Burke cannot trade Kaberle, adding Souray to those 5 would be unbelievable, especially with the 2.7 cap hit. Then, if Kaberle isn't traded, Souray can pick up his production and puck moving next season and beyond with a, everyone say it with me, 2.7 mil cap hit. That's 1.25 mil more than BRETT LEBDA. ..Seriously
The Leafs are still in a great spot for waivers and may be able to grab him if they want him. Without losing any assets.
Agree? Disagree? Thoughts?
