I suppose it's not his fault that he can never be Jaroslav Halak or that Steven Stamkos ruined his home opener. Just kidding, it's his fault.

This concept (emotional hedging) forms the basis of my fantasy pool drafting every year.
I’ve got Seguin and Carkner this year. If the Leafs need a boost later on, I can pick up more division rivals. I don’t see it as “betting against the Leafs”, since the fantasy gods have made it well-known that I am never to win. I think of it as buying insurance to ensure the Leafs do well.
Because by your standards, if I picked anyone in a fantasy league that wasn’t a Leaf and then they went up against the Leafs and contributed to my team I would be betraying the Leafs. Fantasy pools are like gambling, if you let it get emotional you lose. If I cheer for Price at any time, yeah – maybe my loyalties are shifting. Instead, I cheer for the Leafs and let my fantasy go as it is.
For the record, I drafted Price in the 14th round as one of the few #1s left who I figured would be #1 for the season… because Auld. Seriously. It wasn’t like there was a better option and I wanted a third goalie. I could have taken Elliot or Leclaire, but I’m not stupid. This was a business move to win my pool. Not about my allegiances.
tl;dr – shut up. Go Leafs Go.
Somebody tell Alan Walsh and maybe he’ll tweet this :)

(From) Kadri's cousin:
Do any of you actually watch hockey, or are you all a bunch of headline loving puppets. How many of you have actually followed the way Carey Price has played over his first few years? How many of you have watched him play in the first three games this year?
If a team that significantly strengthened its core the way the leafs did this off season added a young goalie with price’s ability as another young player to their core, you’d be on your way to building a contender with someone like Richards added to your D. The kid has always played well, but his mental make up was that of a kid that went from high school, straight to the pros, and 1 year later in the NHL.. He was talented enough to win at every level leading up to the NHL, and was thrown to the wolves too early.
MAF was a first overall pick that struggled for 3 years until Pitts built the best team in the NHL in front of him. Price has played behind some shaky teams and never seeked to engage mentally as a pro. The addition of a new set of players signed in the past 2 years(Gionta, Cammalleri, Gomez, Gill, Subban, Boyd) added to the core of Markov, Gorges, Hamrlik, Plekanec have brought a new mentality to the team. Price dragged through enough growing pain, and we’re thankful we had Halak to prove that even further.
The way Halak played last year in the playoffs was superb. The last time we saw a goalie that dominant in Montreal in the playoffs was VeziHart Theodore in 03. Halak was one of the players who lead by example in his work ethic and mental strength. Price is younger, more talented and has shown last season when Halak took over that he is learning the importance of the work ethic and mental dedication.
Many young players go through that learning curve, especially if they’re that highly touted as a goalie. After his rookie season, Roy struggled for 3 years. He was young like Price. Cam Ward won a cup then hit a slump. Price would admitedly have been better off if he was left in Hamilton for another year or 2, but talent and the ability to play the way he has so far this year, don’t disappear. He’s surrounded by a stronger core of players as he gains experience and maturity. The organization, along with some wiser habs fans, realized the value of price. The management said that the offers they were receiving for Price confirmed to them that they should keep him. They traded Halak mainly for Eller who’s shown promise after being groomed the proper way in his first few years as a pro.
Halak was a machine last year, and i hope he continues it in St Louis. Rest assured that the men who get maid millions to make these decisions know a little bit more about these players than you headline following homers. You actually have a good team this year, i realize it doesn’t feel natural after being blue b@lled for 43 years, so i’ll cut you some slack. We’ll talk again after the headlines tell you otherwise about Carey Price.

People take this site way too seriously. There are times when Price has even looked good. But I don’t understand why you think making fun of the Leafs (1967, Plan the Parade, etc.) gets to be a 1-way street.

Ok, back this one up
you’d be on your way to building a contender with someone like Richards added to your D.
There are three players in the league with the last name Richards. 1 is a goalie and the other two are Mike and Brad, both centers. How can you add a Richards on defense?
There’s a Richardson, but he’s a center too. Richard Park plays right wing, as does Richard Greenop on the Marlies. The only Richard in the league who plays defense is Richard Petiot but he hasn’t played in the NHL since 2009 for the Lightning and he currently plays on the Oilers farm team.

Cam Ward got whacked with a few injury spells. Healthy Eric Staal + Cam Ward = nearly a playoff team.
And after that Cup run he’s only rattled off 30, 37, and 39 win seasons… so yeah, seems like he’s definitely been in a perpetual slump.

Ward’s cup run was a lot of luck. In 28 regular season starts, he put up .882, but his 23 playoff starts were .920 (as a rookie).
But the last two years: .916 SVP in 68 and 47 starts respectively. .904 in 69 gp the year before that. For his young age, he does remarkably well with a high start count (the 47 GP restricted by injury), and still put up slightly better than league-average goaltending for 2 of 3 years. He’s only 26 now, and I see no reason that he wouldn’t be getting better as he matures. I’d count him as at least a “good” asset.
The experiment failed: Get rid of the trapezoid.

Jeeze, guys. What would we do with, say, four promising goaltenders that are too young to play effectively in the NHL at this point in their career? Especially if we were assured that some day they’ll be good?
Would we obtain a veteran to shelter their minutes, like Gustavsson’s Giguere? Would we leave them in the minors to continue to finesse their game at a lower level, like Reimer? Would we let them adjust to a new league against softer competition, like Rynnas? Would we let them sit in the ECHL while we make sure we know what our system looks like, as Scrivens is doing right now?
Gosh, guys. I guess we should give the Habs a pass for throwing Price out there for 40+ starts. And for him going 8 months without a home win.

there was a kid on the train with me yesterday wearing a black Flaming Horse jersey, #3 – PHANEUF. if I wasn’t crippled right now I would have caught him and said “that’s a beauty jersey, except for the colour and logos”.

This I'll acknowledge
Myers rookie season was helped out a tad by Tallinder. Playing with Shaone Morrison is a bit different admittedly, and apparently a step down.

I think Buffalo made a serious mistake forcing him into a number one defenceman spot in his sophomore campaign. Like Schenn, he is struggling with the pressure that comes with expectation. I imagine its worse for him because the expectation is even higher in Buffalo than what it was last year for Schenn in T.O. Regardless, I’m enjoying the brief lull in Sabres’ fans chirping my ear off.

someone wandered by and thought this was a place where people cared who or what a carey price is, and whether it is or could be any good at something.
then he trolled it up pretty hard with such literary gems as “douchbags” and “circle homerjerky” that have since been deleted.
just another fly on the windshield….

I missed all of the more trolly comments!
I love how they come on here, think they are making a point, and then totally blow it when crazy and irrelevant things like ‘facts’ are brought up.
We should email Habs Eyes on the Prize to complain about these douchebag idiots!

Disjointed
WAIT A SECOND!!!!
It’s okay for Habs fans to boo and slag Carey, but not Leafs fans.
Because you won a cup 17 years ago, you’re exempt from mockery. Just a one way shitpath to Toronto. Riiiiight. Hypocrites – the whole lot of you.
Shame on you for booing the next Patrick Roy. You’d think the “Next one” could string together a couple of wins, in particular in front of his adoring fans.
Life’s a bitch, and then one plays in net for your favorite team.
Carey’s ears stick out and he smokes.

You guys are really horrible at this trolling thing, maybe you should go back to doing what you are good at… like booing your so-called franchise saviour and flipping cop cars.

Actually..
..if you HAD taken the time to do the math, you would have discovered that,I,in fact, am correct. However,if you beg to differ..then you can tell us all what the real figure is..not hard to figure out..May 2,1967 to the present day..somehow,I doubt you’ll be doing that. What makes this clock REALLY funny though is that, after tonight..or at the latest..sometime in the next few days, the clock won’t apply to Carey Price anymore. But…alas…the clock ticking on days..hours…minutes..seconds..between Leaf Stanley Cup wins will keep on ticking…and ticking…and ticking….ticking…ticking…ticking…ticking…ticking….ticking…WHEN WILL IT STOP?? …Hint…The Chicago Cubs drought of 102 years between championships might be in jeopardy…
Why are you using so many ellipses? Seriously, why?

yes 6,000 is a lot…kind of pales in comparison to a figure approaching 16,000 though, wouldn’t you say?
stop living in the past
why do you hold on to the 1993 SC so much? it was 17 years ago… once you pass 8 years any championship gets filed under “history”.
for example, in those 17 years the leafs have made the playoffs 9 times, and your mighty habs have only done one better, with 10 appearances.
and by the way, toronto has won 9 playoff series in that stretch while the habs have only won 6… so don’t start smoking those celebratory cigarettes just yet.
hmmm: 9 in 9 or 6 in 10? one team seems to make some real noise when they are in the playoffs, while the other just likes to barely scrape in and then do a whole lot of nothing (last season being the lone exception).
but don’t worry, you’ll always have the league lead in burnt cars and anthems booed.

Answer me this question: Why is it that you and the Habs fun who have come here before you, only joined SBNation so you could bitch about how upset you are on a Leafs blog? Are you that preoccupied with the Leafs that instead of talking about your own team, this is all people like you do? If you were really a Habs fan, you’d be talking about them and not getting your panties in a bunch over something some big bad Leafs fan said about your precious Carey Price. We all just assumed that since you guys boo Price every chance you get that it’d be perfectly alright for us to do the same.
Do we have a misunderstanding here on that?

Get a counter for the last time the Leafs won the Cup
Okay that’s funny. But how about a counter that counts how many years it’s been since Leafs won the cup. You will need lots and lots of room for those numbers.
Should have read up, your totally original and clever post became pretty redundant.

Too bad, that was fun
Counter set back to 0, Price won at home.
Did bring in quite a few flaming posts though, good fun.

Oddly enough, the counter isn’t reset. It’s like it wasn’t set up very well or something.
Or like Carey Price was only 0-2 since his last Bell Centre win or something.

Honestly, I don’t have any animosity towards the Leafs. There’s no rivalry at all. There’s been one important game between the Habs and Leafs in my lifetime, and that turned out to be a complete dud. Way bigger rivals are: Bruins, Sabres, Whalercanes, Flyers, Penguins, Capitals, Rangers.
This rivalry is the lamest in sports.

Clearly it’s enough for Habs fans to come in here to whine and whine about a joke.
I agree, there is no rivalry. When the Leafs have been much better since 93 the Habs have been pathetic. The two years the Habs have been good, the Leafs have been pathetic.
