Oh, so that's how it's done...
The Toronto Maple Leafs did not play their best game of the preseason last night, falling to the Detroit Red Wings by a score of 7 to 3. The contest remained close throughout the first two periods before slipping away in the third. Finnish rookie Jussi Rynnas received quite the welcoming to the NHL, allowing all seven goals on 34 shots. Additionally, those of us who chatted it up during the GDT are now properly educated in the correct way to develop young goaltending (you have to make sure they get shutouts, DUH! /bangs head on desk). Kessel, Bozak, and Grabovski were the three Leaf scorers on the night, and all three were magnificent goals. Nazem Kadri played on a line with Grabbo and Nik Kulemin, but was mostly ineffective and will almost certainly begin the season with the Marlies.
UPDATE: Phil Kessel turns 23 today.

Contrasting our roster to Detroit’s is a sure-fire way to instant depression, when you can look at guys like Hudler and Filppula who would instantly be our first line centre… Then you look at Henrik Zeto (Jared Leto lookalike) and triangle head Datsyuk, and you wonder if we’ll have a forward equal to either of those two in the next decade. Sigh.
Kadri on the Marlies is exciting! They could be an elite team in the A, perhaps like last year’s Hersey Bears. We’ll see.
meh
remember, Detroit picked up Bertuzzi and Modano through free agency, so we can do that too next summer. also remember that those superstars of Detroits were patiently developed late round picks.
also, pre-season games don’t matter, as we learned all too well last year. I went to last year’s pre-season game vs. the Red Wings, where the Red Wings dressed their full lineup and the Kessel-less-Leafs won in a shootout. and i thought to myself, man, if they can equal the Stanley Cup finalists’ close-to-full roster, they might have a chance at the playoffs!!!!1 and we all know how that ended
I went to last night’s game as well, and it was clear to me that their Finnish goalie just didn’t keep them in it (wait, is this 2009?) .So just because they lost 7-3 doesn’t mean anything. Tonight’s game will be much closer.

It’s true, the preseason doesn’t mean ish, but no matter what the stakes of the game, the Wings are far and away more talented. Not every winning team needs their level of skill up front, but it sparks a sadness in me still. The Bertuzzis and Modanos of the world ate pieces you acquire when you’re in contention mode, because they occupy spots that teams like the Leafs would otherwise use to be developing young players. Detroit builds with Grand Rapids, while giving Helm and Abdelkader bottom-6 minutes. Somehow they maintain their level.
This said, I do think that the Leafs are one top-3 forward away from contending. Yes, contending.
Did Jussi the Rhinoceros look just as terrible live and in colour?
yep…
while there were some defensive zone coverage breakdowns, the team in front of him wasn’t bad. he was not a joy to watch, to be sure… 2-3 goals were his fault, but i haven’t watched any replays yet, but it seemed like the goals came out of nowhere, which probably means he had poor positioning.

So, uh...
Schenn’s back in tonight.
Which I think would be sort of a mistake. They say his back has healed up. But I think it wouldn’t hurt for the Leafs to rest the guy and save him for the regular season. It’s not like he’s fighting for a spot on the roster or anything.
he said in an interview a few days ago that if it was the regular season he would have been playing and practicing right after the first game he sat out, the only reason he was taking it easy was because it was meaningless preseason and they were being careful. I’m sure that if there was still an issue he would be sitting tonight too

I think tonight’s game is somewhat meaningful in that it’s the final tune up and you want to go into the first game well prepared with all hands on deck. This isn’t about fighting for roster spots, this is the dress rehearsal before the big show.

The Globe has a really stupid article about how MLSE only cares about money blah blerg blah, I’m not going to link to it though; it’s ridiculous, especially the part about JFJ being smart.
Yea, saw the first section yesterday. The Globe is better than that. I understand looking at the business side of MLSE, but I their hypothesis of “they only care about making money not winning” is quickly busted when you consider how much extra revenue playoff games generate. They casually mention it in the article but ignore it and continue blathering for two days.
One interesting thing was Richard Peddie talking about starting a Real Sports Network that would be home to TFC, the Raptors, and the Leafs. He is quoted as saying “Imagine what we could charge for that.” Ruh-oh.

well, i dunno
the article agrees with a lot of things I’ve had to say. the logic is sound – the MLSE corporation expects a certain level of revenue, and it’s more important to them to have a mediocre team giving them a steady flow rather than have a painful bottoming-out.
as for JFJ, he wasn’t stupid; his hands were tied too much. yeah, some of his moves were stupid, but they were the moves of a man who was Peddie and Tannenbaum`s puppet. A man who was forced to pay Tie Domi 2 mil per year. A man who was probably given the directive to make the playoffs at all costs the year after the lockout. So what did he do? he was forced to keep as many pieces from the 03-04 Leafs as possible. the players and their agents knew the powerless man was an easy mark, so they negotiated the absolute best deals they could, complete with NTCs, knowing that JFJ couldn’t afford to walk away from negotiations, or he would lose his job. the only stupid thing JFJ did was accept the job in the first place.

Where is the evidence to support this? The Leafs were a playoff team before the lockout it stands to reason they should be one after. I doubt that Peddie and MLSE micromanaged him to the point of telling him to make certain trades, and sign specific contracts. They have made it clear that Burke has carte blance and can do as he likes. Occam’s Razor suggests that JFJ was a man with little to no GM experience who had one of the toughest jobs in the league at one of the toughest times in its history that he failed miserably at. He is working as a scout right now and I’d put money on him never working as a GM again.

From what I remember, while the rest of the league was going smaller and faster, JFJ went out and signed guys like Jason Allison and Eric Lindros to try and fix holes in the roster
The first season should have been a playoff year if you ask me, I remember a January meltdown in which we lost 8 or 9 games in a row. Win two or three of those and we’re in. Belfour was very inconsistant
