Howard Berger Must Go

Editor's Note: You've all probably read this open letter that was penned by the then Barilkosphere. Rather than link up Berger's article, if you are still among his readers you should be linking that letter. Let your fellow fans know that there is a better option.

I hope Leaf fans got a chance to read the diatribe put forth by this tool today in which he calls Leaf fans sheep, goats, clapping seals and nitwits. I feel verbally assaulted. To quote a recent fan who was abused "Way to be professional" Berger. This is the last straw for me. You have insulted and abused your privileges as far as I am concerned. If it wasn't for Leaf fans, there would be no need for you and no job for you. Our interest in everything Maple Leaf is why you get paid shitloads of money to get your all access pass to the players/management. I think these press passes would be better given to someone who actually likes the team. Perhaps someone from PPP.

Sign the petition to get his privileges taken away. Maybe we can get the FAN590 to replace him with someone who isn't a bitter old egomaniac who challenges fans to fights on twitter. He created this controversy just to get more traffic, and to make more money, at OUR expense. Sign it now!!!

Welcome

Thanks for joining. Awesome avatar.

Berger’s boss will love seeing the traffic and the e-mails pour in. My suggestion is to post that Open Letter to Leafs Fans on every hockey forum you frequent rather than linking Berger’s article.

To be fair. I actually did not link Berger’s blog. I just mentioned as a reference point and paraphrased it. I did send an email but obviously it will be in his trash folder within seconds. I do follow your blog almost daily, I just don’t write and complain much. Unfortunately, I spend a lot of time on the road, so I haven’t much choice if I want Leaf news through the day but to listen to the Toronto sports stations. Just so pissed at the fact that this clown can abuse the people who he more or less works for. It’s us the fans who want reports from practise, not to have40+ years of pain slammed into our face with a healthy helping of insults added to the wound.

Obviously he’s going for shock value now to increase traffic instead of actually doing his job and reporting. Thanks for giving us a forum to voice our opinions

No problem

That stinks that you’re in a situation where you have to listen to that clown. I definitely encourage doing the petition but just don’t want you to get your hopes up.

I was in diapers the last time the Leafs won the Cup. I’m used to disappointment. Getting my hopes up is a thing of the past. lol

I agree with the sentiment completely. I wish there was a more direct approach. I think if anybody feels strongly about it then they should sign the petition or contact the Fan or their sponsers. Not sure what good it will do but you never know. Trying to take the high road and ignore it won’t change anything either so might as well try to do something.

Berger really does deserve to lose some of his status due to his undisguised contempt for the Leafs audience.

Unfortunately, I know this will amount to nothing but maybe open a few eyes. I’m done with the tool. He says now it was all a joke but nobody “got it” except for a few of his regular subscribers. I don’t buy it. It is still just irresponsible journalism, and “journalism” is still in question

every time someone gets called out for being an ass, it’s all a big joke and it is everyone elses fault because they didn’t ‘get it’

And I think a lot of people get that. However:

1) He’s not paid for biting “satire”. He’s paid to offer insight, and report on things that normal folk like me without press passes don’t have access to.
2) He likes to hide his drivel behind the fact that it’s posted on his blog, rather than actual reporting afforded when he’s say on Hockeycentral. He can’t have it both ways. He’s MSM by trade, not a blogger. But he’s at the forefront of the very behaviour that that has MSM folk like Cox turning their noses up at bloggers, and the Rags not allowing bloggers into the dressing room. What’s the word I’m looking for? Hypocrisy doesn’t articulate exactly what I’m thinking, but it sort-of fits.

Fuck Howard Berger; I want the reporters to report. If I want needless hyperbole and mouth-breathing, I can go to the HF boards. I don’t, however go there, and it’s for a reason. Just do your damn job.

by McCabe the Martyr on Oct 28, 2010 1:55 AM EDT up reply actions

‘Satire’ is a funny excuse because the guy has no clue what that is.

And exactly, he likes to pretend he’s a reporter and then turn around and write that shit and say ‘Hey! I’m just bloggin! It’s not a thesis!"

Berger

Great to know that the majority of Leaf fans are like-minded on the subject of this condescending blow-hard. If his employers fail to acknowledge their responsibility to those of us who simply want intelligent, respectful Leaf coverage, let’s cast our lots with those committed to doing so. Look forward to the PPP podcasts to come.
Years ago, the record industry also thought their poop didnt stink. They were blind-sided because of their arrogance, by a GREAT EQUALIZER, this nifty little thing called the internet. Consumers bought in. We can do the same here…
Go Leafs

Farraway's stance on Berger (long post alert)

I wrote Doug Farraway regarding the recent outcry over Bergers latest outburst:
Dear Sir:

While we as Leaf fans acknowledge your support of Howard Berger, it is an offense to summarily dismiss the sentiments of the very demographic you,and perhaps more importantly, your key sponsors, wish to entice with the services and on air products you offer. Berger’s ‘joke’ has been going on far too long. By his own admission, this is by no means the first public outcry against the brand of ‘journalism’ he feels it is his prerogative to deliver to the most dedicated hockey fans in the game, anywhere. Our displeasure did not originate with his recent ‘gag’. Far from it. The liberties he regularly takes with fans, and Leaf personalities alike is so far below what is acceptable journalism, that it begs the question: why does a leading Toronto sports radio station choose to endorse an individual who displays such regular contempt for the team and it’s fans that it is his PRIVILEGE, not right, to report on?

From regularly abusing the readership then clumsily explaining his masked intentions (was he the only one in on this gag?), to literally challenging a reader to fisticuffs (Twitter), the predominant attitude among Toronto sports fans is that Mr. Berger abuses the privileges his employer (YOU) affords him. We feel we deserve a more responsible brand of Leafs coverage. That doesn’t mean looking at the world through blue and white glasses, it just means respectful coverage minus the hyperbole, the sarcasm, and the condescending posturing. That Berger was openly gleeful that so many Leaf fans voiced there displeasure, as opposed to acknowledging his offenses, is in itself, offensive. In just two hours, one hundred Leaf fans signed our petition. Did we expect to oust him? not at all. We simply want you at the Fan to clue in and realize what the average fan thinks. Hopefully, that matters to you. Controversy may equate to relevance if you are Paris Hilton, but we are sports fans. We want honest, un-coloured Leaf coverage. Not the Howard Stern of sports-shock-jock, third- rate crap we are getting now from Berger.

Have a look at some of these comments…

150. Richard St.Louis he is a disgrace. I hate the leafs but he just crossed the line and i’m a habs fan

141. Steven Cohen I can’t believe this guy is being paid to report on a team that he clearly dislikes and go after the same fan base that pays his salary. Give his job to someone that actually wants to report on the leafs, not his or her’s unsupported opinions.

130. Vinny This guy is not fit to cover the leafs. The FAN can do SO much better!!!

116. Nick Richard Howard, you are truly pathetic. I’m as skeptical a Leaf fan as you’ll find but I can support them though it all and don’t insult the fan base.

99. Alex Parker Fan590, you deserve better.

70. Brian Huddle Disgrace to Toronto Media

Each and every day new sources of quality sports coverage are presented to us sports fans. Local competition offering more even handed coverage, Internet radio, satellite radio, independent podcasts, etc. are alternative means of getting our ‘Leaf fix’. It behooves you all at Fan 590 to acknowledge that listenership loyalty is not an entitlement, it is earned, and maintained by offering quality information, not abusing fans at will then justifying it with a lame ‘just kidding’ disclaimer. At best, this is irresponsible journalism. At no point does Berger qualify his remarks. He just runs the fans down, and we are all just supposed to laugh along with a buffoon known for his disdain of Leaf fans. By summarily dismissing our views, you alienate many of the very fans you hope to engage.

I responded to Berger on your forum yesterday. My replies were neither vulgar or offensive, unless the truth is offensive to your ‘moderator’. My comments were dissected and posted in such a way as to misconstrue context. When I called him on it, my posts were all removed. That is GUTLESS, and disrespectful. If that is the standard you hold yourself to, then I’ll simply do what many have now decided to do, and tune in to your competition.

Respectfully submitted,

Owen Durkin

Here’s his reply:

Thanks for writing

We present a number of opinions on all the platforms that wear the FAN 590 label.

Howard is entitled to his, as I am to mine. You are entitled to your opinion of what we present on any of the platforms we present on. You can chose to like, dislike, reject, turn off any of the platforms at any time.

We are in the entertainment business. As long as we don’t libel, slander or defame under the law we are allowed to say what we want when we want and how we want, and if the consequences are good or bad we reserve the right to deal with them in any fashion we chose because it is our business.

I have never watched a reality program on television. My choice. I read Nelson Demille. My choice. I watch the Maple Leafs despite Joe bowen. My choice.

You have the opportunity to chose. If you don’t like what Howard writes, don’t read it. Your choice.

d

Nice, huh?

That is how Berger gets away with his horse-shit. If being dismissed in this manner irks you as a fan, perhaps it’s time to get behind the alternative media, kids…

Good e-mail. Very well written. And yes, our best move is to not read their site or listen to the radio.

I would also like to thank you all for the support. The petition is moving slowly, as expected. And we realize nothing will become of it, other than hopefully raising questions to Berger’s employers. Baby steps.
I was an occasional visitor to PPP but only looked at recent headlines. After checking out some of the blogs and other posts here, I have decided this will be one of my first stops everyday. You guys do some great work here.
Berger/FAN590?Eklund have all been removed from my twitter, and I will not even click on a link to that tool again. I wash my hands of him.

As Owen stated earlier, he and I are a couple of the admins for I Bleed Blue on facebook and would love all from the Barilkosphere to visit. Loys of debates/conversations on our favorite team.

It’s funny to me that Howard Berger actually gets people ANGRY. It really is simple: Don’t read him if you don’t like him! He’s a good writer. He’s off the mark quite often, but what Leaf writer isn’t? As Leaf fans we’ve all turned off a game and said, “Fuck this team! Not watching another game.” … and then we turn the TV back on and peek at the score 5 minutes later. If you don’t like Howard’s blogs, simply don’t log on to Hockeybuzz.com (which is a mostly-hated site around these parts anyway)… I don’t understand the fuss. I read all of Berger’s blogs and when he’s off the mark, I simply disagree with him and that’s it. Doug Farraway’s response is well put. Relax folks.

'off the mark'?

To me, ‘off the mark’ has ventured into ‘not worthy of employment’ territory, when the common denominator in every one of his submissions is how stupid I am as a leaf fan, how inept the team is, and how he, from on high, can see clearly what us peons are too stupid to notice. By the Fan’s own admission, his running gag, which he somehow has parlayed into an entire career, is based on winding people up. we’re simply informing him, and those who pay him that they have missed the mark.Think of us as a big, blue and white focus-group, for the Fan and the entire media industry to learn from. The real underlying theme here is that the Fan is more interested in profit than it’s product. That spells the end to my patronage. Onward to new, less finance-centric sources of Leaf and hockey news…
As the saying goes, “not to condemn is to condone”. He needed to be bitch-slapped a little…

I hear you.
But is this going to help or hurt the cause? The basic premise of talk radio is that controversy generates ratings. If you are protesting, you are listening.
It might be more effective to hit them in the wallet. This would require someone to make the supreme sacrifice of actually listening to Berger to identify the culprits, but if advertisers get even 10 calls a day saying “I won’t buy your products because you support this pustule,” Berger’s leash will get shorter.
