Signs of Contention

Regardless of how the Leafs end up doing this year, they are going to be more fun to watch than in years past.  Youth, speed, and toughness make for good hockey. Tyler Bozak, Phil Kessel and Kris Versteeg flying around the opposing net, Luke Schenn pummeling Abdelkader, Mikhail Grabovski using his speed to create space for Nikolai Kulemin and Clarke MacArthur have made for a fun preseason. While the defence hasn't been as solid as it should be given the payroll, goaltending remains a question mark, and the team will be overly reliant on its first line for point production, here are four things that make the Leafs playoff contenders:

1.  Character - From the captain out, Burke has put together a group of guys who want to win and believe they can and will.  Nothing wrong with young idealism. Throw in a bit of grit  and what's not to like.

2.  Power Play -  For the first time in many many years, the Leafs seem to have a mobile power play unit. In particular, the recent tactic of occasionaly parking Dion Phaneuf in front of the net  is excellent. He is the largest player on the powerplay unit and has enough toughness and grit to withstand the abuse that sometimes comes with that territory. More importantly, his driving to the net and switching spots with Kessel creates movement, which can create space. Phaneufl should practice deflections. Seriously.

3.  Penalty Kill -  Also a long time coming are players like Mike Brown and Fredrik Sjostrom, who specialize in using their speed to run down pucks (and the clock) while killing penalties. We have some homegrown talent in the likes of Tim Brent who can complement these new additions by, for example, winning faceoffs. The Leafs can't really do any worse in this department, but there is reason to believe they will do much better.

4.  Speed - Speed is a factor in the special teams as highighted above.  However it is not limited to special teams.  Speed is a defining characteristic of all three top lines.  This is good, particularly in today's NHL. Smaller faster players are having some success in this league. Just ask Patrick Kane.

Making the playoffs is a pretty modest goal. Outside Toronto, however, the prevailing view is that the Leafs will be golfing in the postseason. That view is no doubt coloured by a degree of objectivity that is hard to come by here in Leafland. However, if these four dimensons of the Leaf game continue into the regular season, the Leafs have a good chance of proving many people wrong. It'll be fun to watch.

Phaneuf in front of the net on the PP is pretty awesome.

The Leafs will be much better then they were last year. For one thing, they won’t go 0-7-1 to start the season; I promise you that. They may not be a powerhouse, but there’s some real solid peices in the room now. I believe this team will be competing for a playoff spot.

Making the playoffs this year would be a double—maybe triple—rainbow moment for me.

What does a triple rainbow even mean?

If we don’t make the playoffs this year, I think I’m going to need anitdepressants.
I may also have to send Seguin a strongly-worded letter

A strongly worded letter eh? I think it might work better if you just fart in his general direction.

This may sound harsh

but the Leafs haven’t been in the playoffs since the last year before the lockout… that was 2003-04… You were what? 11? 12?

Perhaps you were spoiled with the success of the previous 6 seasons?

The reality is, despite the fact we set a record last season for the most years without playoff competition, the current lull is still really far from being on par with the years from 1979-80 to 1991-92. That was a 12 year lapse where they had 1 freaking season with a points percentage over .500.

Even in the past 6 years, the Leafs have finished with over a .500 points percentage in 3 of the 5 years they missed out on the post season… at least they were competitive. This is nothing like how bad the team was during the 80’s.

All of this dour talk of not being able to withstand it needs a dose of the realization that the team is ridiculously young and is getting better. Even if they don’t make the playoffs, they’re heading in the right direction.

"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

- Sir Winston Churchill

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.

I know what you’re saying, but not making the playoffs makes me sad (I think that’s understandable). I wasn’t around in ‘79-’92 but I still get upset that we’re missing the playoffs, and that “upset-ness” accumulates year after year. I was kind of exaggerating with the anti-depressants, but my point still stands: I’ll be upset if we miss the playoffs, more upset than I was last season or the season before that.
PS. I was 11

Also: getting better is great, but if it doesn’t start translating to playoffs (and then serious contention) it doesn’t mean much
