Leafs 3 Habs 2: 1-0-0
The Leafs opened the game with a beautiful tip by Tim Brent before Kessel buried a goal on a breakaway faking to Price's left and sliding the puck into the net on the right.
Montreal scored soon after; as Carl Gunnarsson failed to clear the puck and Mike Komisarek waved his man to the front of the net. The Leafs got into penalty trouble in the second period but escaped with the lead intact before Clarke MacArthur scored a beautiful dangle through a Montreal pylon defender:
The Habs answered back with another hard nosed goal banging away in the crease a minute later. The end of the third saw Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin draw a penalty with some excellent puck possession. The Leafs failed to score on the power play as Phil Kessel took an off balance shot and was robbed by Carey Price.
The final seconds were textbook last season: the Leafs repeatedly failed to clear the puck and Montreal had a number of excellent chances. Unfortunately for the Francophones they were stoned by J.S. Giguere as the Leafs pick up two points.
| Cheers | Jeers |
|
1. Giguere's 26-28 (0.928) night set the tone for the Leafs. |
1. The power play went 0-4 and could have made this game a lot less tense. |
| 2. Kessel showed some serious speed and slick hands. | 2. Mike Komisarek looked shaky tonight. Needs to get more involved. |
| 3. Grabovski was all over the puck tonight. | 3. Colby Armstrong needs to bring more for his salary. |

2. Zigomanis is more likely to be the one sent down when the AHL crew start to push for a spot later this season.

Here's the thing
Brent ONLY faced off against Plekanec (5) and Gomez (7)… Bozak by comparison faced off against Gomez only once, and Plekanec only 3 times.
Gomez and Plekanec were both 50% or above on the night… and last year both were around 50%… to argue that Brent was horrible when he was facing off against two of the Habs top faceoff guys ONLY is kind of unfair.

Milbury (I think) was a little annoying tonight. Sounded like Mcguire on Ovie
As a Toronto sports fan I proudly follow the lessons of lachrymology.
Wasn’t Milbury, he’s calling the Oilers-Flames game. But yeah they slobbed Subban’s knob all game long.
Here’s some good analysis of Subban: He’s incredibly headstrong, hogs the puck, takes runs at players from behind which will lead to penalty trouble soon, and skates with this false sense of self entitlement that literally oozes from the television.

Also ducks from checks to save his life.

I mentioned it in the GDT but you just couldn’t generate scoring chances tonight. You were stuck in your own zone for long stretches and when you did get sustained pressure your game plan involved cycling endlessly and never driving to the net. Price was expired milk in net tonight, could barely make easy saves and you didn’t throw much of any solid scoring chances at him. 3 goals on 24 shots. Not sure where to find powerplay shots.

First period was good. After that D was pretty sketchy. Way too many turnovers. But the O did what it had to and the G was good. Last year we should have won but lost on poor tending. This year we probably should have lost but were saved by good tending.

Random Points
Versteeg led all forwards in ice time, and looked good doing so.
We have a legit 2nd line!
Bozak will rack up a lot of assists if he keeps playing how he did.
Mike Komisarek is a bit out of control… needs to rein himself in, or the coaching staff should do it for him.
Giguere looked great.
Price looked like shit.

Komi is still in that same frenzy from last year I hope he calms down. Bozak is looking really calm and good. Kulemin looks like he’s been trying to outbench and outsquat Schenn in the offseason or something. That guy’s trajectory has been insane. Ziggy looks ridic on the faceoffs. Lots of positives and not as many negatives as before. PK looks like it has lots of jam too

I'm fine with it
as long as Kulemin is getting legit top 6 minutes, and PP time, I’m fine with it.
He isn’t a bottom 6 forward, and suggestions to the contrary annoy me.
As long as the Leafs keep doing everything I think they should (aside from drafting the wrong players) I’m fine with it… I’ll announce when I think they’ve made a mistake… no worries.

At first
I wasn’t sold on the idea of Versteeg taking Kulemin’s place on the first line at first, but I’m warming to the idea.
Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?
Yeah I worried about the
puck control side of things… spoke openly against the idea at first, but if it doesn’t work they can rejig things. For now it’s working and that’s fine.

So...
I was at the game, and here are some key things I noticed.
- Aside from Brown and Sjostrom, the forechecking effort was way too soft
- Defense was a mixed bag, solid defending against rushes but absolutely atrocious on breakouts
- Kessel is extremely dangerous whenever/wherever he touches the puck (duh)
- I caught myself NOT worrying about our goaltending, and boy was that ever nice
- Versteeg and Armstrong need to get a bit more engaged, a higher effort will make these guys fan favourites fast
- Full-contact goalie races at the intermission are comedic gold
