The Monster is finally here! I've been updating the progress on this drawing in the CC's. Overall it was a fun drawing, I struggled on parts and succeeded with others, and as always it was rewarding to complete another drawing.
As I alluded to yesterday morning, I would like to dedicate this drawing to a PPP member. When I first decided to draw Jonas Gustavsson it was in the dark depths of last season, when Vesa Toskala was still terrorizing the Toronto crease. To me, Gus symbolized the hope that the Leafs would one day have someone other than the world's worst goalie between the pipes. In this spirit of optimism I chose to draw "The Monster", and for this reason I choose to dedicate this drawing to Karina. For her always cheery FTB's, her funny anecdotes and cute animal pictures, this drawing is for the member that for me (and I believe many others) represents the undying optimism that so many of us feel is a necessary part of surviving as a Leafs fan.

Thanks! Although maybe not epic. I recently saw a graphite pencil drawing that is over 20 feet wide and 8 feet tall… that is what I call epic!
I’m also a bit bummed out that Gus switched his helmet. The same thing happened with the Kessel drawing. I picked out the ref pic over the summer (or in Gus’s case last season) and they went and switched the jerseys on me! Ahh well, can’t win ’em all. ;)

So any thoughts on your next drawing target? You’ve done Schenn, Grabbo, Kessel, and Gustavsson now.
Colton Orr?!?!
I lost a bet.

I want to do a classic Leaf. I’ve got a picture of Tim Horton lined up that I’m strongly leaning towards. For now though I have a commission drawing lined up for Christmas and one of Gord Downie for myself on the drawing board. At some point I would like to do another Schenn, as well as Clark and Gilmour. We’ll see though, each drawing takes a long time to complete and my artistic drive isn’t always there.

Can you post Gord Downie when it’s done???? Would love to see that.
Great work here. Eyes and cheekbones look like Gus under the mask. Love it. Should make t-shirts or something.

Thank you. I think the resemblance I achieved is decent- it’s hard to tell because so much of his face is obscured by the mask. I think that places increased emphasis on what is showing. But I’ll let you judge for yourself. Here is the ref pic I worked from:

Clearly my colours are way off, but overall I’m happy with the likeness. I omitted the crossbar on the right side intentionally because I didn’t want the bright red to distract the viewer’s eye from the mask and his face.
I probably won’t post the Gord Downie drawing here as it has nothing to do with the Leafs (I guess I could pencil in Bill Barilko’s ghost in the background ;) ). If you want to keep track of my work outside of Leafs players you can always click the link to my portfolio in my signature, or add me on Facebook. Since you’re interested, here’s the ref pic I’ll be doing the Gord Downie drawing from:
It will be in coloured pencil as well. If you’d ever like a drawing done or to purchase a print I do take commissions and I can have prints made up. Thanks again for the comments and support!

He’s so high. ^^
Awesome…I forgot about your link in the sig. I’ve checked it before. I’ll keep an eye out and check randomly for GD Gord Downie.
The likeness in the minimal aspects of Gus face that do show through the cage is what makes the drawing good.
Commissions, ehhhhh? Do you “export” to Ottawa?

I refuse to draw:
(1) Lebda
(2) Anything in a Red Wings jersey
So that’s a negatory. ;D

Monster'ed
Auto-rec’d, maple, once again. I would really like to see him in an action shot, like that spectacular pre-season save vs. the Wings.

Also, found this pic, just so maple can understand how good he is-

I am Mikhail Grabovski's smirking revenge.
Thanks kidk!
Not to rain on your parade, but I quite like that drawing of Gus. It’s a style that I could never master. I think it captured his look very well, which is a real challenge when you’re not using realism as your style. Although the background leaves a bit to be desired, the top part kind of reminds me of a spider’s web.

Absolutely gorgeous. I adore it.

I’ll have to commission a creation sometime.
