Some interesting tidbits:
- Nazem Kadri is driving offensive results
- The MGK Line are beasts
- Francois Beauchemin allows the fewest chances against per 60 minutes of EV time

Kulemin and Grabbo need more PK time. Sjostrom and Brent aren’t getting it done.

I’d like them to try someone else with Sjostrom. Brent seems to be in panic mode or something to me, but I’m no expert.
Foooooood.

I am in favour of any advanced statistics that can sum up John Mitchell’s output as “-22.57”

unless i misread it, Mitchell the sum total output of Mitchell’s more than 5 minutes of PP time this season is two chances AGAINST us.
Christ, what a maroon….

Gustavsson is great at evens but his PK sv% is brutal. He’s trying to carry the team on his back but he’s getting burned every time they take a penalty.
I lost a bet.

And I’ve really loved watching Nazem Kadri play so far. He’s a little on the weak side but he has this shiftyness and vision that nobody else on the team possesses.
I lost a bet.

Agreed
He gets knocked around a fair amount, but he makes up for it with his vision and knack for drawing penalties.

once he gets some better core strength and develops better NHL speed he will be something to behold

there were two times last game where a quick shot would have been an easy goal for him

Good call. He’s holding on to the puck wayyyy too long when he gets those chances. Kessel should give him a few pointers

Oh I know he does (as is expected).. just still bitter about when Wilson said that to the media, while John Mitchell can do no wrong.

PK save percentage isn’t:
1. repeatable year to year
2. closely correlated with even strength save percentage
Essentially it has a lot to do with how bad your team’s PK is and has a lot of variation due to small sample size.

Agreed. Can’t really base Gustavssons performance on his PK SV%

Something that would help his PK SV% dramatically, that requires no change on Gustavsson’s part would be if Komisarek and Beauchemin would stop fucking jumping in front of pucks and screening him instead of just letting Gustavsson see the puck and the D clear rebounds and box out opposing forwards.
Because that is how most of the powerplay goals against are going in. Forward’s coverage breaks down. Defence overcompensate for shot. Goalie can’t see a fucking thing. Gustavsson should just take a swing at Komisarek’s ankles the next time he does that.

Both Sabres’ powerplay goals were on screens because those two were trying to block the shot.

I read something on copper and blue
That you can look at a full seasons PK S% for a starter and get decent analytical results. But you need those numbers to get up to a ~1000 SA
I am drinking the Kule-aid!
Kiprusoff led the league in shots faced two years at around 2200. 1000 shots on the PK seems awfully high, that’d be around 13 a game for him.

Found it
It was ~1000 since the lockout. It was low 300s on average for a single year.
I am drinking the Kule-aid!
That says to me that in a three year period a goalie’s PK SV% can jump by .05.
Also that hasn’t charted PK SV% vs. EV SV% to look for a correlation.

So what you’re saying is that we should give Holzer the “C”, right?

I wonder if there is a compilation of stats out there that won’t make me cringe at the Zigomanis demotion. I agree with Slava’s notion that Orr doesn’t need to play every night. It’s too bad we no longer have a good utility player, i.e. the Zig-man, to sub in the lineup. Obviously he can play better D and win way moar faceoffs than Orr. Brent seems to be losing his touch nowadays as well. Ugh
Foooooood.
I’d really like to know what Zigomanis said/did to get sent down. The only possibly explanation is that he offended the wrong person. That, or Ron Wilson is out of his mind… hmmmm

As every game passes, it makes less and less sense. Obviously he isn’t going to help our offense, but our PK could really use some key faceoff wins.

He would have had to clear waivers if they held onto him longer. I believe this is why the move was made.

And this one gets little attention:
“Francois Beauchemin allows the fewest chances against per 60 minutes of EV time”
For the amount of ice time this guy plays, he does fine. Ideally he’d be playing second pairing minutes.

To borrow a phrase from Chemmy, this is why we should trade the shit out of him at the deadline
Contenders should be knocking our doors down to acquire him, and we spend 9,000 comments in another thread extolling why we need first rounders to get the kind of players we need to become elite.
We’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t at this point. Get first rounders out of Beauchemin and Kaberle, and roll the dice with our other young blue-liners.

Wait what I like Beauchemin he’s cheap and the core of our D and won’t get us assets.

I borrowed the “blank the shit/piss/balls” from you.
I know you’re a Beauchemin fan, but I don’t know how we get better without giving him up. Phaneuf and Komisarek aren’t going anywhere with those contracts and giving up Schenn to keep a 30 year old makes no goddamn sense.
Resident Capologist
Сертыфікаваны Grabbo Палюбоўнік
Beauchemin’s cheap. The “saw him good” crowd hates him which means he won’t bring in a first rounder or first line player.
He has more value relative to his contract here than whatever we’d get for him.
Do not trade.

How do you make the team better?
MacArthur might fetch a 2nd.
Kaberle might fetch a 1st if he’s a) available and b) willing to waive his NTC
Who else? Everyone else ether has a bad contract, too young, or doesn’t have tangible trade value.
If you can trade Kaberle before Beauchemin, I’d sign off. But I don’t know how likely that is.

Kaberle won’t get us a first with less than a year left on his contract.

One other condition: If Kaberle agreed to extend with the team.
If I remember correctly, one of the big things that dropped demand for Kaberle over the summer was that Burke wouldn’t let other teams talk extension with Kabby (presumably because Kabby had given him a blanket “I won’t”).
The experiment failed: Get rid of the trapezoid.
