Hack The Bone! Hack The Bone!
Our friend Steven Stamkos is back in town tonight, and the Leafs need to figure out how to stop him. It's crunch time in Toronto; they currently sit 13th in the East, seven "> // --> points out of a playoff spot, and need to string some wins together fast. Most of the folks covering the Leafs these days aren't overly optimistic.
James Mirtle writes that not only are we going to face Stamkos and Hedman tonight, but
Two days later, it’s the Edmonton Oilers and Taylor Hall in town, with the top pick in 2010 set to make his Toronto debut in his 25th NHL game.
On Saturday, the Boston Bruins bring in Tyler Seguin, last June’s No. 2 selection that the Leafs dealt away for the rights to Phil Kessel.
After that? Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals next Monday and Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday.
In all, it’ll be a little like running the gauntlet of lottery drafts past the next nine days, with Toronto facing seven of the 14 players taken first or second overall since 2004.
'Hack the bone!' may be a reasonable tactic to resort to at this point.

The Mirtle article said the lineups could change before the game...
but am I the only one that sees a top line of MacArthur, Kadri and Kessel and thinks “Hey, maybe we can get some goals in tonight!”?
For once, I agree with this line shuffling, even if Kadri’s first NHL game starting at centre might be rough, thoughts of him passing to Kessel and Mac makes me smile.
Still want to see Wilson gone though.
I'm not a bandwagon Colts fan. I was there when Jeff George got drafted. That mustache still haunts my nightmares.
I don’t mind this shuffling either, and maybe we get lucky with Bozak and Versteeg together. I guess this means Mitchell gets second line wing? Or Brent?
Wilson:
“Johnnyy Fuckin’ Mitchell…. you know how I said your potential topped out as defensive forward and you should focus your mind on that. Well, never mind, second line for you, score some goals and save me my job bitch!”
Fire. Wilson. Now. Anger is more useful than despair.

From the article:
MacArthur – Kadri – Kessel
Caputi – Grabovski – Kulemin
Sjostrom – Bozak – Versteeg
Orr – Brent – Brown
I like ‘em too. That third line actually makes it look like we have depth… it also looks like Wilson may have realized he doesn’t actually have the players to go with Burke’s “two scoring lines, two checking lines” philosophy.

Yep, I think so too. Top 6 bottom 6 only works if you have lots of good scoring talent – but the Leafs lack that. So you need to go for a distributed scoring model instead.
Or to put it another way – the Leafs mostly won only when their defence or their 3rd/4th lines have scored. Putting some better goal scorers up against the other team’s lesser defencemen will give the Leafs goals. Yeah, they’ll give up a few more, but that’s not the problem right now.
Fire. Wilson. Now. Anger is more useful than despair.
by Peter de Chatham on Nov 30, 2010 9:29 AM EST up reply actions
I disagree somewhat
What that third line is (IMHO) is the perfect mix of defensive play and offense.
Versteeg is a noted 2-way player (seeing his most succesful offense coming from the third line)
Bozak was a highly rated prospect because he is known to have an all around game
Sjostrom is a defensive forward.
This is the kind of third line I want to see.

Um, in what universe are Ovechkin, Malkin or Crosby “ghosts of drafts past”?
Ovechkin and Malkin were drafted in 2004 when the Leafs were widely considered one of the favourites in the East (along with Philly, Ottawa and Boston) and lost in the second round.
Crosby was drafted in 2005 via a league-wide lottery.

this… this is disheartening. can we close the gap between he and giggy?
or maybe initiate a last minute gustavsson write-in surge?

i’m fairly certain they’re the only deserving players on this team.
Not really our shtick. Price is currently the best goalie in the league, he deserves to get in. We’ll leave the ballot stuffing to the Habs and Penguins supporters.
Certified Grabbo Lover
it’s not meant as a slight to Price, or even an attempt to unseat him.
i just see the gap between he and any leaf goalie (considering he is a write-in)
to be unfortunate, given much of this is based purely on favouritism.

True Story
I met a guy on Saturday that is good friends with John Mitchell. Mitchell says Gustavsson is rock solid in practice, can’t get a goal on him (factor in the fact he’s JFM).
This guy I met though thinks that Gustavsson is the most inconsistent player on the Leafs. I laughed at him.
