Lightning at Leafs: Some Numbers Before the Game
The Leafs have inexplicably sent Luca Caputi to the Marlies to bring up Joey Crabb. Crabb has 9 goals in the AHL in 22GP but also has the worst +/- on the Marlies at -3. He'll slot into the second line with Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin. Per Jonas Siegel the Leafs are scratching John Mitchell and Brett Lebda.
Tampa's an interesting case, at 73GF and 78GA we'd expect them to be below a .500 points percentage based on the pythagorean. For those of you who hate stats; it doesn't make sense that they get outscored and win more than they lose. Observe:
| GF | GA | Pyth Pts% | Pyth Pts | Actual Pts% | Act. Pts | Difference | |
| TOR (22GP) | 48 | 61 | .428 | 19 | .431 | 19 | 0 Pts, 0.003% |
| TBL (24GP) | 73 | 78 | .522 | 25 | .604 | 29 | +4 Pts, 0.082% |
Essentially Tampa has two more wins than we'd expect so far. Who knows, maybe we'll get Lady Luck on our side tonight. If Toronto can stay out of the penalty box and keep Steven Stamkos from lighting them up on the power play they might be able to slow this game down and grind out a win.
If Toronto plays sloppy undisciplined hockey like they did against Buffalo they're going to give Stamkos a wonderful gift at home ahead of Christmas.

I can’t think of who will be on the fourth line. I’m having a brain fart. Could someone help me out?
Mac – Kadri – Kessel
Crabb – Grab – Kule
Versteeg – Bozak – Sjo
Orr – ? – Brown
Play Stamkos!
Is it a terrible idea when killing of the penalties tonight to focus one player to cover Stamkos 100%, then leave the other 3 players to deal with the other 4 lightning (essentially making a 5-4 PP a 4-3)?
Probably.
Could it hurt?
Malone would run over Gus or something ridiculous, or St. Louis would use his old man strength and shovel one in.
Dion Phaneuf: turning the tunes up since '10
wow, i should pay attention when I read things, i completely missed “focus one player to”

Wasn’t there a basketball movie where the entire team covered one guy with the ball, and he still scored? Did I dream that?
Joey Crabb is in the lineup for one reason, and one reason only:
To hack Steven Stamkos in the knees so hard that we don’t have to play him for the rest of the year.
Oh, you better believe that's a paddling.

Oh I think we definitely will.
In the sense that future-Leaf Steven Stamkos is going to light it up.

Okay, so, true story.
My sister was out with some friends and met up with Jerry D’Amigo and Joey Crabb. There was some apparently innocent interaction back at their place. Fast forward a couple of days: BOOM, Joey Crabb is promoted.
If anybody knows Mike Zigomanis’ phone number, I can pass it on to her, since she has the magic touch.
pimping your sister out for Marlies promotions? I love the leafs too but I dunno man.

Will Colton Orr do something stupid to bury the Leafs tonight?
Or will he be invisible?
Tampa has no tough guy now that Konopka is playing on the Island (because Orr sure as hell isn’t playing against Downie) – sit him and get a useful body in the lineup!

Ohlund tried to take Kessel out in his VERY first game back last year (In a completely clean hit, that Kessel even admitted was clean).
That means he is a dirty sombitch, right?

Just a reminder
Crabb leads the Marlies in goals this season, with 9. Perhaps Wilson wants someone to score goals for some reason.

the only number i don’t want to see tonite is a zero – in the Leafs’ goals for category.
getting shut-out is effin’ boring to watch, kids.
now, i don’t expect their goals for in this one to exceed tampa’s (SE opponent @ Home, Tuesday Night, let’s be honest)… and thus, they shan’t win. but one would be nice.

TB has a horrible GAA so you have a decent chance of scoring a goal even though it is Tuesday and you’re playing the Southeast division.

1) Don’t take penalties. At all. Ever.
2) If #1 is not an available option, incapacitate Stamkos.
3) I unno….how about somebody SCORES A F***ING GOAL?!

The joke is that they’re calling up this career AHLer instead of D’Amigo, who’s got way more talent, and Stefanovich, who also has way more talent and has just gotten loaned to some KHL dump because he wasn’t playing at all for the Marlies.
They could have built some good will with him instead by giving him some minutes with the big club, but no… stupid.
Seriously, Crabb.
Fire. Wilson. Now. Anger is more useful than despair.

Why rush D’Amigo? Crabb is the leading goal scorer and deserves a shot with the club, I’d rather have Caputi around but Wilson seems to hate him.

Seriously, get your facts straight.
Stefanovich obviously didn’t play for a reason. Most of us don’t know the reason. We have all heard the stories of laziness and sloppy backchecking. Either way, he wasn’t cutting it in the AHL, so does he deserve a call up as a reward?
Absolutely not.
D’Amigo has 3 goals. Crabb has 9. So they called up Crabb who has been in the NHL before and has been producing more in the AHL.
They could have built some good will with him instead by giving him some minutes with the big club, but no… stupid.

interesting number
Tbay’s 5v5 F/A ratio is 0.78 – 5th worst in the league. Their 5th ranked powerplay is clearly helping to offset that.
The Islanders are a shocking 0.52. Amazingly bad at even strength.
Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.

Hey, if you’re gonna call us birds you might as well call us chickens.
Gagne is skating in the warm-ups and looks like he’s back in the line up. That means he’s good for one goal tonight, Stamkos will get at least 2, that means the Leafs need to score 4 to even have a shot at winning tonight….

They’re giving us a week to get those four goals, right?
