I love Kessel but he just doesn’t fill that Dougie/Sundin void on this team. Its a player like that that we’re severely lacking.

The truth is

for about two and half years, Dougie was one of the 2 or 3 best players in the world. I am 42 now and a Leaf fan all my life and in that time they have never had a player who achieved that status. Sundin performed at a high level for an extended period of time and that made him special but he was never considered one of the top players in the world. Sittler and Salming were close and very good for considerable stretches as well but Dougie was incredible from the time he was traded here till the end of 1993-1994 season.

All Hart

There is not a shadow of doubt in my mind that under the “which player is most valuable to his team” interpretation (not the “best player in the league” interpretation) that Gilmour should have won the Hart trophy in 93.

127 points from a guy who was maybe 5’9 and 160 pounds, soaking wet. Sundin was more skilled, but I have never loved a player more than Doug Gilmour in 1993.

Agree completely.

He was given the Selke as a consolation prize but he was the most valuable player to his team in the league. Lemieux’s accomplishments, after coming back from the Hodgkins, were inspirational to be sure, though.

LaFontaine had a hell of a season that year as well. 53 goals, 95 assists.

I have never loved a player more than Doug Gilmour in 1993.

This, forever.

I remember that game. Gilmour was awesome.

Dougie had a combination of skill, toughness, and a mean streak that no current Leaf does; but that I think Kadri just might.

The best part of this clip is Dougy drinking a beer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0q4Ig-N5p60

Dougie is #1 in my books.

Good luck to future Leafs who try and dethrone him.
