On The Fourth Day of Leafsmas
On the fourth day of Leafsmas
Burkie gave to me...
Four Years of Brad,
Three Luke Schenns,
Two Special Teams
and
A center for Phil Kessel
From James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail:
He may not be the big, physical centre this team could use, but he puts points on the board and a four-year deal would be wholly reasonable given he turns 31 in May. The free agent class is so thin that if July 1 is going to be your draft, you'll want to select the likes of Brad Richards.
Thanks to James for composing this at 3am after the Globe Christmas party. I didn't even have to edit it.

Not to nit pick, but I feel like I’m getting the same gift on both days 1 and 4.
Negative. I am a meat popsicle.
Kessel’s centre could be someone else. Crosby?

But genetically engineer our army of Gretzky-Crosby clones to constantly demand league minimum in payment.
The experiment failed: Get rid of the trapezoid.
Also the entire army is “good in the room” and “great character guys”.

My pick for day 6:
Six(ty) minutes of hockey. Don’t think I’ve seen it this year.

The problem is just that the Leafs average 60 minutes of hockey for every 120 minutes played. I think the last two games are as good a demonstration of that as any.

I like now that we’re getting higher up in the Days of Christmas I start singing the words as I read them.

Thats the first thing I was thinking too but the answers above destroy anything I was going to say.

JUST SAY NO TO BRAD RICHARDS
In 2012, we have our first pick. Brad Richards will get too much money/term. Pass.
My degree is worthless
Pass on Tank Nation.
Yes to Richards.

Brad Richards – where is that going to get us, really? Big dollars to an above-average centre? It’s the kind of thinking that might get us to 7th place if the cards break right.
My degree is worthless
Mikhail Grabovski
is an above-average centre. Brad Richards is way better than Grabovski.
While he’s getting a bit old, he clearly has a few years left. As always, it comes down to dollars and years. $7/5 and I’m ecstatic, more on either end and I start to get pretty worried. Given that whatever he gets is likely to blow both sides of that number out of the water, maybe I’m saying that I don’t want him :)

I’m gonna guess drafting 14th overall in 2012.
Bitter Leaf Fan: Skepticism, not cynicism.
Exactly. Why don’t we draft top-5 in 2012 instead, and get a player under cost control.

Chance Burke goes the Godd Till route…

TAXI FOR BURKE
TILL SWEPT TO LEAFS PRESIDENCY ON SURGING WAVE OF FAN UPROAR
But seriously, I think I looking at rebooting the reboot is valid. Move on the short term fixes like Beauchemin, Komisarek, etc, and work on contending when Kessel/Schenn/Phaneuf/Gustavsson/Kadri are in their prime or close. Add free agents in a couple years as necessary. Will it happen? Of course not. But if I didn’t spend way too much time thinking about things that will never happen, I wouldn’t be a Leafs fan.
My degree is worthless
I would rather we drafted 15th or worse. 14th is the bridesmaid of draft picks.

I think the fifth day of Leafsmas should be 5 wins in a row for the first time since freaking 2005.
This too shall pass
