The five stages of finding out your team just traded Dion Phaneuf to the Leafs
(Summarized from Calgary Puck, but read the first ten pages of the thread for full effect.)
1. Denial - We couldn't have traded him to the Leafs, they don't have anything worth trading for!
2. Anger - If we're not getting at least two of Kaberle, Kessel and Kadri, we should fire Sutter. And even that might not be enough. The Leafs still have their first round pick, right?
3. Bargaining - Wait, now Anaheim is involved. This could still be OK as long as we're getting Getzlaf or Bobby Ryan.
4. Depression - Who the fuck are those four guys?
5. Acceptance - Just kidding. There are only four stages.

Judging by the comments I read over there, there are a really wide variety of opinions. Some were right pissed that Phaneuf is gone, but slowly came around to liking the deal more. Although a lot of people get upset anytime a star player leaves their team, it’s too early to ascertain who the real ‘winners’ of the trade are.
they should be happy that they got bouwmeester over the summer.

To be fair, I was hoping to get Bouwmeester over the summer, so I guess it evens out a bit.

Amazing
Nice to see the opposite happen once in a while.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
frankly, my reaction was rather similar to #1: We couldn’t have gotten Dion Phaneuf. We don’t have anything that Calgary would take for him!

My knee-jerk reaction was of confusion; why would we get another defenceman? I didn’t believe it at first.
neither did i, i was shocked cuz now we might see cuthbert more on tv now that he plays in toronto

I think the best part of this whole thing in the immediate, for both the fans and the MLSE is that for the first time in weeks i’m actually excited to watch the game tomorrow night!
It nearly rivals Kessel’s first game.

Poor Flames fans….especially if they’re used to physical hockey. How are they going to handle Stajan? Who will be first to notice he spends %50 of the game on his pants?
And when Hagman goes 12 games without a goal? Whether this year or next.
Or when White flips the puck away blindly, in his own end no less, to avoid taking a hit.
or when Mayers steps on the Ice?
These will be things they just aren’t used to and/or able to handle.

I´m more excited over having Sjöström reunited with Orr and forming one of the best shutdown-lines in the league, than over Phaneuf.
I have a nagging feeling that he will never return to what he was just last season offensively, at def he never was and never will be a very good player.
But ´nuff negativity; love the whole concept of gigantic, foundation-crushing megadeals!

Ana is having trouble signing Ryan. At that point they believed that Ana was directly involved in the Phaneuf trade.
If Burke manages to get Ryan from Ana then the NHL is going to do some investigations.
I think that with t he cap space they’ve cleared up by trading Giguere, they should have less trouble signing Ryan.

i hope so. I’ve just been looking at the 06-07 Flames stats, and that was one of those lightning in a bottle type years for the team. Huselius put up 34 goals that year, Kipper had a 0.917 SV%, 3rd best in the league. Iginla was better than a PPG player, Tanguay was a PPG player, and Daymond Langkow put up 77 points in 81 games. Of course Phaneuf looked good that year, who wouldn’t?
Not saying Phaneuf isn’t good, but that was his Norris nominee year IIRC, and it was only his second in the league. If he turns into a McCabe type of player, I’m ok with that. I’m not expecting a Norris winning d-man or the next Bobby Orr. That’s how we get down on guys; “Oh, he’s not the greatest at his position in the league ever? he sucks!”

Yes he's playing better
And he’s been out there for more goals for than White, and fewer goals against than White… he’s been playing better this season… but his point totals are way down as he’s taken fewer risks.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
He's a good D man
but he’s a lot better offensively than White, that’s the key thing. He’s also more physical. His D is probably worse, but overall that’s a matter of reining in his tendencies to leave his position.
If he can reduce the risky plays, but still keep the edge to his game, and set things up from the point and maintain his high shot totals, then he should be fine in the long run.

I read the first 15 pages and it was hilarious! This is what they wanted straight up for Phaneuf:
Pick any 3 of the following to trade for Phaneuf:
- Kaberle
- Schenn
- Kessel
- Kadri
- Toronto’s 1st round pick this year
- Anaheim’s 1st round pick this year (3-way trade)
- Stralman
Reasons each one is ridiculous:
- Burke has said 10 billion times he will not ask Kaberle to waive his NMC
- Burke has said 5 billion times he will not trade Schenn
- For the price we JUST paid for Kessel… trade him? Yeah right!
- Burke worked hard to move up and draft Kadri, and Kadri fit’s Burke’s mould. No way he’d trade him.
- Don’t have our 1st this year… obvious reasons
- We never had Anaheim’s 1st, it was never a 3-way trade!
- We traded Stralman TO Calgary who then traded him TO Columbus… do they not remember!!!!!!
My art portfolio: www.ArtWanted.com/canadianmaple09
they could be confusing Stralman with Stalberg, that’s rather common.

Another member on there pointed out that they had traded him to Columbus. With the general lack of knowledge about what Toronto has and what they’d be willing to trade I’m inclined to believe they did mean Stralman. But you could be right.

Thats especially great...
Because that’s not even a lack of knowledge of Toronto, thats a lack of knowledge about their OWN team.
So Handsome.
I think it’s hilarious they always complain about being bombarded with news about Toronto and find the need to post derogatory comments on any news items about Toronto, yet they know absolutely nothing about the Leafs, their players, their picks, the deals, etc.

Also they hoped to get Getzlaf or Ryan from Anaheim in the 3-way trade they were convinced was happening.

Not in the slightest
If you watch the interview with him today, it sounds like he’ll be happy to work with another goaltender with the same style he tries to play.
I can’t tell if its just playing up to the media, but it would seem both realize that they are going to eventually be pushing each other (probably next year, Jiggy looks like he’s getting the #1 spot for the rest of the season).

If its Geztlaf coming back, then it makes some sense.

While Blake traveled to south Florida late Sunday, the other player acquired from the Maple Leafs, goalie Vesa Toskala, was unable to do so because of an immigration holdup.
Toskala, too, was apparently happy with being traded to the Ducks.
"He’s doing cartwheels," Blake said.
