Toronto's Tomas Kaberle remains firm on his desire to stay with the Maple Leafs, so failing a sudden change of heart, he will not be submitting a list of teams he would consider waiving his no-trade clause to join.
Via Darren Dreger.
Looks like we can end the trade speculation until his no-trade clause expires during the summer at the draft. However, it does look like the price has been set for Alexei Ponikarovsky: A prospect/roster player + 2nd Round Pick.

Hrm.
We’ll get a prospect + 2nd, for poni, and a 2nd or 3rd for stempy.
Kaberle may not like his decision when he’s traded to the island or edmonton or some other awful place on draft day.
I think Burke will want to soften the draft-day sting of Boston having our pick by trading Kaberle for a first and a prospect. someone will pay.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Stempniak stick around next year. I get the feeling that coaches and management really like his work ethic. Also not an old guy by any means, he’s in his good years. Just depends how affordable he is I suppose.
The Luck of the Irish Leaf: Because when the Irish are short on luck, at least there's tons of booze.
I wouldn’t pay more than $1.5MM for Stempniak, and he won’t resign for close to that.
He could only intermittently crack the 2nd line on a crappy Leafs team this year. To me he’s a third liner on a good team. Can’t pay third liners $2.5MM.

Kaberle very well could have already submitted the list… and either way, if a contender wants him, I’m sure it can be worked out.

Burke may also not want to trade Kaberle at this juncture. It may be a better idea to get either a set draft pick or a established roster player on draft day.
To put it this way, and since everyone always talks about Chicago, we won’t get Sharp or Versteeg at the deadline, but on draft day there is a much better chance of that happening.
We require, as a team, proper levels of pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence.

good point
which also furthers my belief that Burke may not be pushing Kabs to waive the NTC because he knows exactly what deal he’s going to get on draft day.
Think about it: would he have gotten rid of Hagman and all our other forwards to get Dion if he didn’t think he could easily replace Hagman via a trade?

I guess he really only also got rid of Stajan, but the point still stands. Hagman was arguably our best F next to Kessel.

The only ones left to speculate on for trade would be poni and stemp. And Finger.
And after this season, just Finger. I don’t even want to hear the pathetic debate on what we could get for Finger (or more precisely, what we would have to give up for some one to take his cap hit)

Kaberle always yanks my heart around. When I was certain he was being moved, I desperately wanted him to stay because he was our only really skilled player. Now that he might be staying put, I want him moved because it’s clear his future is elsewhere and I want to see what he’ll bring in. Either way, I want nothing but the best for the man and his career, but his career may be boarding the bus without him…

Can someone explain to me how Antropov was worth only a #2, but Poni is worth a #2 and a prospect/roster guy? Was there that big a discount because of lingering concerns about Antropov’s health?
I don’t really understand that either. It has to be the injury thing, otherwise they’re almost the same player minus the fact that Poni is a winger and Nik is a centre.

could be less supply and more demand this year, could be darren dreger pulling a reasonable sounding price out of his ass because he knows it won’t be far off.. then again the leafs probably wanted a 2nd and a prospect for antro too making that his ‘price’

It’s more of a sellers market this year. A lot of teams are hard against the cap and want to make a run. Plus I think they believe it’s wide open (maybe because Detroit isn’t really a factor).

It's true
That it seems more wide open (again, season isn’t over yet)
But in the West you have to take seriously:
CHI, SJ, VAN, LA even COL & PHX (although not as much)
East:
WSH, BUF (aka Miller), NJ, PIT
Detroit having a bad season has really opened things up in the west.
NJ has made their big claim for the postseason push (Kovy), BUF will undoubtedly do no trades as per usual (even though IMHO they should try to get more scoring), WSH is a rediculous offensive team already, but them and PIT could make a push for a cheap goalscorer or d-man for depth.
But will CHI do anything until the summer? doubtful. SJ maybe, but they already acquired Wallin on D and they’re scoring isn’t a problem. I wonder what VAN is thinking in terms of how happy they are with their current roster heading into the postseason. I’m not sure COL or PHX plans on doing any major changes either, partially due to cost and COL especially is doing a pretty good job at rebuiliding with their youth.
LA always seems to be surrounded by trade talks but nothing major has materialized yet.

2 things will make me upset
regarding Kaberle.
He walks as a UFA or we receive less than a first round pick in a trade.
All other scenarios are fine.

i doubt
he walks as a UFA. BB must realize by now that Kaberle won’t waive his NTC next year either, so this draft day will essentially be the prelude to Kaberle’s UFA. He needs to get an asset back, because one way or the other Kaberle won’t be resigned.

one way or the other Kaberle won’t be resigned
Why not? I think Kaberle and his agent will be very clear about if he wants to pursue free agency or not, and if he does, that sends a clear message that he’s not committed to success in Toronto, in which case, Burke trades him out of here, ‘cause we’re not going to lose Kaberle for nothing or allow him to ransom our future. Come July 1st, Tomas’ NMC ends and he has zero leverage to control his destiny… unless of course he negotiates a reasonable, even advantageous, contract extension to stay in Toronto.
“It’s actually quite simple,” Curran told ESPN.com on Monday. "Tomas Kaberle has been a Maple Leaf since the day he was drafted and would prefer to remain in Toronto to help turn things around there, rather than try to win somewhere else.
I hope Kaberle signs a contract extension this summer at a reasonable rate that allows the Leafs to use their resources aggressively and competitively on other free-agents. I don’t see why this isn’t a more attractive scenario then trading him away for whatever we can get.
Like, we’re not talking about Danny Heatley or Alexei Yashin here. It’s Tomas.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so conflicted about wanting a player to stay or go. Part of me doesn’t know how the Leafs will ever get the puck up the ice without him, or how they’ll manufacture shots on the powerplay. But the other part of me notices his defensive deficiencies, his weak board play, and the fact that I feel deep down that he’s holding the team back somehow.
by Phil-harmonic on Feb 11, 2010 12:18 PM EST up reply actions
I have the same concerns about losing his puck-moving skills. He’s so good at the long outlet passes now that people don’t even notice them, but they’re unreal. I can look past defensive deficiencies if he’s making up for it in offence. Some defencemen get paid more for their offence than their defense, I’m ok with that.
With phaneuf in the mix, as well as Schenn, i’d be more inclined to move one of komisarek or beauchemin. I’m not convinced yet that Gunnarson is our answer to replace kaberle.
Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.
Kaberle cant play D
All this talk of what we will do without him skating the puck up the ice is a bit over rated. I mean you can pass a puck fast and in some cases, safer than have a player skate it up. If you look at this team and how its being built you can deduce that speed will play a big part in this team going forward, not only size and toughness which Kabs does not utilize at all. Now the question really is, do we still need a guy who has average speed carry the puck up ice or is it better to have a guy that can make that first pass (like Luke does) out of the zone in a bang, bang play?
If Kabs can play defense (just a bit better) and was tougher in the defensive zone, I would be dead set against letting him go but the truth of it is that when one speaks of Kaberle, you are really talking about a one dimensional player and nothing more. I think he is a better player or point producer but I belong to the old school that Dmen should be good a defense first and anything extra is a big plus. Kaberle cant play D.
"There's been four different Cup winners the last four years, and I got one of them (Anaheim) and it was a fighting team. We're playing it that way regardless." - B. Burke, Toronto Maple Leafs GM
On this we can agree—we should re-sign him if it’s for the right number.
I think our differences are (1) I wouldn’t pay him more than $3MM for 3 years, and (2) I’m less optimistic about the size of the home town discount he’ll take. He’s already done it once; maybe I’m cynical but despite what the agent says I can’t see him giving much of a discount again. And I think his market value (not what I think he’s worth, but what I think he’ll get paid) is somewhere $4.5MM.
by The '67 Sound on Feb 11, 2010 1:12 PM EST up reply actions
sundin took a discount on his last 2 contracts, i could see tomas signing for about the same price, but even then, we’d still have a shitload on money commited on defence…
There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E"

Sundin took a nominal discount. It was hardly a beneficial discount.

I think on the open market he gets $5M/yr for a 4 or 5 year contract. Maybe more.
Would he consider taking a long-term front-loaded contract that allows him to retire a leaf (7 yrs / $25M)? I fail to see how he’s not a huge plus for this team at a $3.5M cap hit. If he retired before the end of the contract, the salary wouldn’t count against the cap hit.
yes, this is wishful thinking.
Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.
Based on Burke’s outspoken nature about long-term contracts, i really doubt this happens.
And really? We’re even considering him going DOWN in cap hit? Really? i think what he makes now is absolute minimum for ANY deal after his current one expires for any team, assuming no major injuries or significant drop in play.
Remember how some argued Ian White should be getting 3.5m next year? I love White, but he’s no Kabby.
Leafs Nation: A drinking team with a hockey problem.
by nhlcheapshot on Feb 11, 2010 2:22 PM EST up reply actions
Like I said, wishful thinking. Cap hit staying the same is probably a best-case scenario, and even that would require a long-term contract to make happen.
But the more I think about it, the more I think the addition of Phaneuf has made one of Komi / Beauch redundant, not Kabby. I know they’re Burke-type players, but Burke still appreciates the need for a good offensive / puck-moving defenceman.
Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.
This would all be easier
if Finger would just disappear – go away, what have you.
A lot easier to justify extending Kaberle when you don’t have that 3.5 mil boat anchor hanging around your neck.

If we didn’t have tucker’s 1M cap hit still we could have a more reasonable shot at keeping Kabby. I hate to see him go. I’m a pure Kabby homer, he’s my fav player. Guys like Kaberle are hard to find. I’d much rather see Komi moved to keep him than to trade him for a 1st rounder. Like i’ve said before too, Kabby doesn’t get injured, he hardly has to sweat much out there. he has easily 8 seasons left in his body. I’d love to keep him.
Keep Kabby please. The Ducks took Blake and Toskalol – maybe they like Finger too. I don’t want to see Komi go either.

I liked this one recently about Toskalol – Vesa Toskala recently had problems getting into the States regarding his visa, and going to play (ride the pine) for Anaheim. Apparently U.S. immigration officials took a look at his statistics, and could not believe he is a professional goaltender.
