a rangers 1st rounder in 1999, has good hands and a scoring touch but plagued by inconsistency. bounced between the A and the show his whole career.. this sounds like a depth move to me. he’s played for the rangers, coyotes, kings and flames

by JaredFromLondon on Feb 13, 2010 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

I think you’re right. Warm body replacement is what we needed, and we’ll only pay this guy $300K because we only pay half of the salary of guys that we claim off waivers.

by JP Nikota on Feb 13, 2010 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

not quite, he was claimed going down, not coming back up… but his contract is pro-rated, so it’ll be something like 1/3 of his contract that goes towards his cap hit…

by El Monstruo on Feb 13, 2010 2:06 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty sure cap hit remains the same no matter what, no?

But ya, we will only have to pay the remaining portion in terms of dollars pro-rated for the rest of the season

by mf37 on Feb 13, 2010 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

Cap hit remains the same because these are regular waivers and not re-entry waivers. On re-entry waivers, the teams split the salary and cap hit 50/50.

by unavoidable on Feb 13, 2010 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

I was thinking that as I left my computer earlier. Should have double-checked. It’s a negligible contract either way.

In the original EHM, I always picked up Lundmark and he always turned out really good. Funny seeing him on the team 8 years later.

From Matchsticks and Gasoline
Lundmark is a classic NHL Tweener – he’ll lead your AHL team in scoring, get called up and look great for a game or two. Then he’ll fade, get bumped down the depth chart and then be a healthy scratch. He has some puck skills and is a decent passer and has quite a hard shot and quick release. He’s the type of guy you can slot into the top 6 in the short term when there’s an injury – just don’t expect him to perform well indefinitely.

He’s been a nice little asset to the Flames org the last two years. Sad to seem him go.

You folks you just claimed a AAAA guy off waivers. I saw enough of him in Phoenix to know he’s not a full time NHLer. Not sure what Burke is thinking. He’ll do in a pinch, but that’s about it. If the Leafs want this type of guy maybe they’ll take Sloan off our hands in DC?

$600k. UFA at end of season. Didnt cost any assets. I dont really see any downside here.

Anyone know how many players the Leafs have under contract? The limit is 50, be nice to know how much room the Leafs have leading up to the trade deadline.

Haha I count 48 + Lundmark, so 49. (from capgeek)

But that also includes Van Ryn

Leafs Nation: A drinking team with a hockey problem.

by nhlcheapshot on Feb 13, 2010 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

I found that it’s 49 minus Kadri and Devine(also on capgeek, under reserve list, but i don’t know how to link it). They are on slider contracts, so if they don’t play 11 games in the NHL this year, they don’t count on the list.

by Sarnia Leaf fan on Feb 13, 2010 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

do buyouts count towards this?

by stormshadow on Feb 13, 2010 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

No, I dont believe so. Or we would be over 50 with the acquisition of Lundmark

Leafs Nation: A drinking team with a hockey problem.

by nhlcheapshot on Feb 13, 2010 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

IIRC

Lundmark is a center. Could mean Grabbo might be out logner than anticipated, could be the end of the line for Mitchell or Hanson (ie – send them down to the Marlies, Mitchell being the more likely target I’d hope…) Might be a case of needing more wingers. Don’t see it as a long term solution for anything, no matter how you look at it.

Interesting that he’s coming from the Flames. Burke likes Sutter’s team a bit.

I have nothing interesting to say.

by blurr1974 on Feb 13, 2010 3:49 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I would be delighted if this meant the end of Mitchell.

I couldn’t believe how much ice-time he got against the Blues. Perhaps it was the coaching staff giving him enough rope to hang himself.

Low-risk pickup for the Leafs. I have no problems with it.

Us Leaf fans should not have very high expectations though. I highly doubt he’ll suddenly “figure things out” at this stage in his career, let alone with the Leafs.

I think he’s more of a Boyd Devereux coming to score goals against divisional opponents so we can claw our way out of the basement.

Boyd Deveraux or Bates Battaglia would be comparables in terms of impact. So hopefully he gets a hat trick on the last day of the season to pull us out of a lottery spot.

I wonder if Burke had this in mind when he swapped four roster players for two – eventually Calgary would be sending people down and he’d snag a bonus…

I've been looking at the sky

by Back In Black on Feb 13, 2010 6:41 PM EST reply actions

good point…

My initial thought was that Burke picked him up off waivers to prevent (or to discourage) other GM’s from offering utility players as a package for Poni or Stemp… Assuming other GM’s have made offers to Burke for Poni, let’s also assume that they are trying to water down the return by offering a utility player to fill in the empty roster spot. Well, now that the spot is full, Burke can go back to the table and say, “look, we don’t need your plug, our roster is fine, now give us that draft pick! Thanks!”

...Being surrounded by Sens and Habs fans makes me lose faith in humanity...

by El Monstruo on Feb 13, 2010 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

That’s an interesting thought. Certainly Burkie is smart enough to concoct something like this. Looks like the Lundmark pick up is only win!

by unavoidable on Feb 13, 2010 10:30 PM EST up reply actions

I’d like to think Burke is above the level of scrounging for Calgary’s useless spare parts.

by CanadianMaple09 on Feb 13, 2010 7:15 PM EST up reply actions

I’d like to think Burke isn’t above anything, if it builds us a better team.

by Bower Power on Feb 14, 2010 3:46 AM EST up reply actions

But you might be wrong. As much as Burke wants more than anything to return the Leafs to glory, he has shown so far he’s a man of principles and may NOT do some things:

1) Ask a player to waive their NTC (it’s possible he still might, but he’s done a hell of a job in the media insisting he won’t)
2) “Dirty” offer sheeting (without negotiating with the other GM first)
3) Immediately trade away a new free agent signing, ESPECIALLY a college free agent signing (im just assming, as this has more to do with his ability to be able to sign free agents in the future)

He sent hanson and stalberg down. I hope you guys are right and this is just a fill in move because he’s about to dump bodies for picks. If this is a precursor to trades then cool. If this is to play Lundmark over Mitchell for the remainder of the year then it’s also cool. However, if this is to play him over Hanson and Stalberg then i don’t like it at all. It didn’t occur to me he’s putting in bodies because he’s about to lose some. So I hope you guys are right.
