Canada 8 v. Norway 0: No Banana Skin

Step One Done

For 20 minutes all of the troubles that saw Canada finish seventh in Turin were on display. The forwards were having troubles creating openings when confronted with a determined trapping team and the defenders were over passing when Canada got powerplays. Yes, it was just the first 20 minutes but when you're looking for indications that this team is going to push past all comers it wasn't entirely encouraging.

Then I imagine that Canada heard that Norway's curling team didn't roll over for Kevin Martin and they proceeded to teach those kipper eaters a lesson:

Dany Heatley and Jarome Iginla led the scoring for the Canadians with two goals a piece while Mike Richards, Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, and Rick Nash all scored one goal a piece. Sidney Crosby led all players with three points, all assists.

The San Jose trio of Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton, and Dany Heatley had chemistry from the off but a nice find might be the line of Rick Nash, Sidney Crosby, and Jarome Iginla who scored the nicest goal of the night on a four way passing play with Duncan Keith. The Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, and Eric Staal used their size and speed to dominate. On the back end, they were certainly not challenged but the defence did a great job of moving the puck. The Goalie Guild has some notes on Luongo but basically they should consist of: Stayed awake, should never play the puck, "Luuuuuu" on dump-ins gets annoying

At the end of the day, this was a powder puff team but you can only beat the team in front of you. Paul Hunter cautions against being too happy with this start based on the last Olympics:

While there was a sense of inevitability about the Canucks’ outburst, nothing is ever certain in Olympic hockey. Just ask any of the players who were on the Canadian team in Turin when that team got shut out 2-0 by the Swiss in 2006. The Canadians started that Turin tourney, one in which they finished seventh, with a 7-2 win over Italy so don’t read too much into this whitewash.

I definitely agree that this was just step one but a team like Norway, with a hot goalie with a history of stifling Canadian shooters, was the kind of team that could have proved fairly tricky. At the end of the day, the 2005 World Juniors and Friends overcame their slow start and wiped the floor with Norway. One down, five to go. Up next: the Swiss.

Ok, the auto link just connected Team Canada with the Canucks in that last quote, which is just wrong.

I am Mikhail Grabovski's smirking revenge.

…Giving a new and horrible meaning to the phrase “Canada’s team”.

I liked

1) The passing from the D, in all three zones. I didn’t think they over-passed in the first; I think they were just trying to be patient until the forwards started moving around – they spent too much time early standing still.

2) Penalty killing, especially Toews against the 5-on-3. I still maintain that we don’t need to take defensive specialists to these tournaments (and I’m glad we didn’t); our best can play at both ends. Toews and Richards and Bergeron and Morrow can handle the checking without sacrificing offense.

I know it doesn't matter

But its clear from the replay that Iginla had a hat-trick.. stupid that they ‘officially rewarded’ the goal to Nash

Phaneuf Phever, an upgrade in skill and alliteration!

From Cox (at about 2 am)

BTW, they finally changed that final Team Canada goal to Iginla’s, giving him the hat trick on the night.

Seeking revenge on the Swiss.

I got razzed the the last time I was in Switzerland, visiting a friend of mine. Crushing them at the World’s helped, but wasn’t the same, either. It’s just not as fun as abject, Olympic humiliation. Speaking of which, did we get any reaction from the Norwegian side of this game? It’d be funny to hear them trash talk. I wonder if Sleza could find something for us.

Talk about spreading the wealth…there were only three skaters without at least a point, Morrow, Keith, and Seabrook. The one thing I would have liked to see, especially later in the game after a good lead was built up would have been to see Morrow get a bit more ice time. I live in Dallas and follow the Stars pretty closely as well as the Leafs and I swear I only saw him out for one or maybe two even strength shifts.

by Sonic_Screwdriver on Feb 17, 2010 1:38 AM EST reply actions

He may very well see his ice time go up against tougher teams, where he might be deployed as a shutdown guy matching minutes with a star player.

by JP Nikota on Feb 17, 2010 2:06 AM EST up reply actions

I have a feeling you may very well be right about that.

by Sonic_Screwdriver on Feb 17, 2010 2:57 AM EST up reply actions

Jeez

Canucks fans are fucking annoying with their “luuuuu” sounds like they’re booing their own goalie

by jmobes on Feb 17, 2010 3:51 AM EST via mobile reply actions

yeah “Louuu” needs to go away.

Also- Despite not getting a point – I get what all the hype is on Keith. That guy is the most fluid skater/passer I’ve ever seen for his size.

Member of the Phaneuf bandwagon since 2005!

Ya

Agreed, I never get a chance to watch him that much, but he was incredible handling the puck and great vision for the ice.

Also Doughty is proving he wasn’t picked for this team for nothing, great shot, great hitting, great shifts out there

Maybe scott niedermayer’s “heir” as a great two way defenceman who can score?

I think he’ll be better than Nieds.

“Luongo, having been so used to a full workload in Florida and Vancouver, sure looks sharp as it’s been 15 minutes since his last stop! That’s some mental preparation!”

It’s amazing to get to watch guys like Weber, Keith, Nash, and the rest of the West Conf. guys on American teams I don’t get to see a lot of in Ottawa, with my basic cable.

Shea Weber is a beast, he holds his blueline better than anyone I saw out there.

I think Pronger had to hold off on elbowing a few Norwegians in the head, who tried to slip past him along the boards.

I fully expect Pronger to destroy someone these games, and then get suspended. He seems mad this year.

He seems fully pissed off, but boy did he look happy on that first Dany Heatley goal (nice little slap-pass, more slap than pass).

I’m guessing he’s the first to snap, if Canada is down in a big game…I feel like i’m jinxing it just writing that.
