The Dominion of Canada v. The United States of America
There is not much I can say about this game that has not been said in better words. One team was expected to be here and the other is the shock of the tournament. While one was dismantling their co-favourites the other was getting the job done on the back of incredible goaltending, a well-organised defence, and opportunistic forwards. Much like 2002 in Salt Lake City an American team that was not given the respect it deserved is standing between Canada and what we believe is our birthright: hockey gold.
The women, on Thursday, provided the men an incredible example with their outstanding victory over the American women. If the men play with the same commitment, desire, and tenacity they will be on their way to kicking off national celebrations. In case any need any extra motivation some great sportsmen (and woman) offer their thoughts:
Some people believe [hockey] is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.
- Bill Shankly
Dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you're willing to pay the price.
- Vince Lombardi
If you are first you are first. If you are second, you are nothing.
- Bill Shankly
The person that said winning isn't everything, never won anything.
- Mia Hamm
And from the great man himself that highlights the way in which the Canadians have united to put aside their egos for the cause:
Sure I am this day we are masters of our fate, that the task which has been set before us is not above our strength; that its pangs and toils are not beyond our endurance. As long as we have faith in our own cause and an unconquerable will to win, victory will not be denied us.
- Winston Churchill
The late Flyers coach Fred Shero certainly was ahead of his time with regards to the national feelings about this game:
"As far as this game is concerned I believe it is going to be the highlight of my life. If we win I'm going to be sky high. If we lose then I think it'll be worse than dying. I'm ready, my team is ready, and I believe that we are going to win."
On a team with only a handful of players left from 2002 there is a great chance for any number of new players to learn what these words mean:
Win today and we walk together forever.
- Fred Shero
GO CANADA GO!

You know, Winston’s mother was an American – and he was more popular during his lifetime in the US than in Britain.
Just saying. ;)
Hoping for a good game today.

I figured it was an all-round winner of a line
satisfying to deliver, and unlikely to upset the guy receiving it :)

Anyone got a pool or predictions going? Most betting sites I’ve looked at have Canada as favourites, but only by the smallest margin possible (by 0.5 goals).
Canada’s D has been soft on the puck in their own end and, as a result, the wingers have been horribly prone to turnovers at the half-boards. Canada also seems to have a tough time handling speed to the outside and the US team has speed to burn. Luongo looks shakey and Canada fell apart in the final few minutes against, gasp, Slovakia.
I’m hoping (praying, begging) Canada pulls this one out, but I wouldn’t be remotely surprised by a US win.

I am also SHOCKED, though at the fact that mf37 is being very pessimistic. lol.

Ya know...
I don’t think I’ll be too upset if team Canada were to be upset by the Americans. Not that I am an American but I think I would feel an eerie since of bliss if the Americans did beat the Canadians – after all, besides being Americans. who built that team and coaching it? To me the American team is something that I as a Leafs fan can be proud to say my team will one day play like that, or look like that, or whatever term you want to use to illustrate the fact that Burke will do the same in Toronto and Wilson will make them all successfully work his systems. As a Leafs fan, there is more meaning to me as a fan that the Americans win than the fact that I should root for the Canadians simply because I was born or lived there.
Maybe its just that either way it a win win if you’re a Canadian and a Leafs fan… Except if you’re an American Leafs fan, then its a super big plus if the Americans win!
"There's been four different Cup winners the last four years, and I got one of them (Anaheim) and it was a fighting team. We're playing it that way regardless." - B. Burke, Toronto Maple Leafs GM
This is why I wanted them to win bronze. Now its why I want them to win silver. If they win gold I will probably become more and more likely to hate on Burke and Wilson if the Leafs don’t turn things around, and will always add a line like “yeah, and theyre the assholes who pissed off our entire country to please the 2% of the American population who cares”

I want them to lose because they are playing Canada, plain and simple
