Now That is Maple Leaf Hockey

Brian Burke needed last night's performance to keep the media from calling him a moron for trading away so many players, and boy did his new hires have their bosses back. Three new Leafs; three stars of the games.  Dion Phaneuf smashed and punched people; Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped ever puck shot his way; Fredrik Sjostrom helped make the Leafs a perfect 2 for 2 on the penalty kill.

Yeah that's a pretty good first impression made by all of them.

Aside from the newbies, the Leafs of old (last Saturday) also played a very impressive game with solid play and few mistakes. All around it was a great game for the Buds.  Twenty more like that for the rest of the season and we'll be talking PLAYOFFS!!!1

What has happened to the Boston Bruins? Only one win in their last 10 games. 1-7-2, meanwhile the Leafs (3-5-2) have actually (unfathomably) picked up 4 points on them in the last 3 weeks. We’re now just 8 points behind the Bruins and we still play them 3 more times. New goal for the remainder of this season: CATCH THE BRUINS!!!1

YES

You have given me hope. Wouldn’t it be awesome if we managed to pass the Bruins? Maybe they would give us our first round pick back for Kaberle then ;)

Interesting quotes from TSN today:

Dreger, in his Q&A:

The Flames, in my opinion, still don’t have a centre to complement Jarome Iginla. Matt Stajan is a quality centreman, however on a good team he’s a decent No. 2, or a very good third line centre and like Chris Higgins, both contracts expire at the end of the season, so neither trade addresses Calgary’s long-term concerns.

THERE. THAT’S WHAT MATT STAJAN IS. NO MORE ARGUMENTS.

From the CP article, a less-than-inspired Ponikarovsky quote:

“I’m not worried, it’s just the business,” Ponikarovsky said. “If you get traded, that’s the way it is. I just want to play hockey and have fun.”

Poni… ? Why does it sound like you want to leave us?

by JP Nikota on Feb 3, 2010 9:07 AM EST reply actions

I read that not so much that he wants to leave us, just that he understands there’s a good chance of it happening. Which there is. Who else thinks Kulemin is looking more and more like Poni 2.0?

I’d love to resign Poni at $3MM but I think the odds of that happening are slim to none.

I wish Sutter had agreed to this trade earlier in the year. It seems like the guys are having a lot of fun out there. Granted it’s only 1 game, but obviously there has been a lot of…unhappiness this year. Stajan and White probably felt disappointed more than anyone (they’ve been around the longest).

With Dion, and Giggy, it seems the team has some confidence back, and are playing with some fire and having a little fun. Who knows. Maybe we don’t get 20 wins, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we get 15.

I’d do that deal with one HUGE caveat – the Leafs walk the talk on earning roster spots and have the willpower to stick Moreau in the AHL next year. If not? Forget it.

by JP Nikota on Feb 3, 2010 10:03 AM EST up reply actions

The Oilersphere (?) have great stuff on Moreau and he’s clearly done.

MC79 had a great piece on Moreau’s bad penalty habit

…in Ethan Moreau’s case, he took 1.78 penalties per 60 minutes of play and drew 0.75 penalties. So, for every 60 minutes of 5v5 he plays, he takes 1.03 more penalties than he draws.
He doesn’t play 60 minutes a night though – he’s averaged 12.03 5v5 minutes per game since the beginning of 2007-08. For him then, an 82 game season would be 986.42 5v5 minutes long. That’s 16.44 hours. He’ll take 16.9 more penalties than he draws in that time.
The average forward would be at 3.6 more penalties drawn than taken. This means that Ethan Moreau has, since 2007-08, generated 20.5 more power plays for the opposition in the course of a given season than would a forward who takes and draws penalties at average rates.
GAA/60: Goals above average/82. Minor penalties cost, on average, 0.2 goal differential…In Moreau’s case, it works out to -4.1. If you could slot Ethan Moreau’s twin into the lineup, identical in all but his penalty taking/drawing, at which he was league average for a forward, you’d expect the Oilers to be about four goals better over the course of a season.

They were thinking that Hiller was their starting going forward and that they needed to sign him to a contract before he hit the free agent market at the end of the season. So they did that and then had two goalies making $10.5M total for next year and needed to move Giguere at any sort of a cost savings. See mf37 above.

Does anyone actually “hate” The Star? I know they have their share of horrid writers (Rosie DiManno being right up there at the top) and extremely biased, factually liberal articles, but they still do have access to sources and resources that many of us underestimate. Their reporters for the Leafs, for example, still have exclusivity only a few bloggers have, even if that doesn’t give them the right to dismiss their competitors so off-handedly. I see the danger of flipping the coin all the time now, where fans like us bash the mainstream media and say without disregard that they’re useless and serve no purpose anymore. I dislike The Star a lot, but I still read and use their articles for information I can’t easily obtain.

If the Hawks manage to get rid of Bolland, they might even have enough money for Kovy. Well, that and they decide not to ice a third and fourth line next year.

Not sure what the return would be for Atlanta, but of those teams listed the Kings still seem to me the most likely destination if Kovalchuk goes anywhere. For sure, and the Kings are just coming into their own as future contenders. But on the other hand, that’s the dilemma of trying to capture fan support and revenue for any amount of time in a non-hockey market. The Kings have the right amount of prospects and draft picks to make a trade for Kovy without breaking up their team in my mind. But Atlanta desperately needs Kovy though.

I was just in a Cab

on the way back from my dog’s vet (he got neutered), and there was a sports radio-show on (i live in Ottawa). These guys were talking about how close the SNES are to catching Buffalo for being a top-3 team….

Ridiculous Ottawa sports media, seriously, they are 5 points back and the Sabres have 2 games in hand, plus the fact that, in all likelihood, the sens streak will slow down (especially with the momentum killing break coming up). They then proceeded to play off of each other, talking about how the leafs win last night was pointless, and how lucky the Bruins are to be getting two picks in the top 6 or 7 of the draft.

Its funny how they are the exact opposite of our media (who are always pessimistic), by basically thinking Ottawa can pull off another 6 or 7 game streak, whereas their division Rivals (us and Boston) will continue to suck for the rest of the year.

And for good reason. Steve Mason’s regression this year can make or break that franchise next season. It’s too bad considering Hitchcock is a brilliant defensive coach.

by bkblades on Feb 3, 2010 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

I heard on the TSN panel last night that Mason had too much of an entitled attitude, partly due to his immaturity of course but also they said in part because the coaching staff let him get away with a little too much last year and didn’t rein him in when needed. If so that is a coaching failure for sure and it probably sowed the seeds of Hitch’s firing.

not sure if that makes sense for Phoenix. Grabbo still owed 6 million over the next 2 seasons. I do it in a heart beat though. Mueller is talented but hates playing for Tippett.

by birky on Feb 3, 2010 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

Mueller also struggled with Gretzky, so I’m not sure Tippett is the real problem.

he played alot of minutes in his rookie season. played less last year (sophomore slump maybe?). minutes are waaaaay down this season. interestingly, his sh % didn’t drop by a huge amount last year, but he was shooting a lot less.

He can also play Centre or Wing: flexibility is key when you don’t know who you’re going to have in those positions next year.

Phaneuf Phever, an upgrade in skill and alliteration!

by Shield on Feb 3, 2010 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

i think this has actually been the key problem. he’s always played center but the team doesn’t think he fits there long term. he’s been awful on the wing, which is part of the reason he and tippett haven’t gotten along. his future is def. not in phoenix.

by birky on Feb 3, 2010 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

I would actually like that deal, he’s younger and was a first rounder; though I doubt this is a real rumour. Only way that it makes sense is that Mueller is American, and Grabbo is not a Burke get.

THN scouting report

ASSETS: Has impressive size, hand/eye coordination and reach. Is at his best with the puck on his blade. Can score goals and also set up teammates with equal aplomb. Is versatile enough to play all three forward positions.
FLAWS: Isn’t a great skater, which somewhat hinders his otherwise supreme offensive potential at the NHL level. Doesn’t utilize his physical gifts enough to his advantage. Takes some nights off.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Inconsistent scoring forward.

by birky on Feb 3, 2010 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell

by bkblades on Feb 3, 2010 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

IF we picked him up, it’s more of a long-term thing. Grabbo is definitely not a long-term option on this team. Burke is thinking further than just next year. Don’t forget, Grabbo will be 27 next season. Mueller only 22

by birky on Feb 3, 2010 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

You’re saying as if 27 is old. 27 is approaching Grabbo’s prime. For a team that still needs to be competitive, Mueller is still a step down in results. If the Leafs can find a player than can replace Grabs in production, then fine, pull the trigger.

“To make a deal that clearly is going to work out, and that was proven as early as (Tuesday night’s 3-0 Leafs win), it’s a great feeling to make a deal like that,” said Colangelo. "And it makes you hunger for more.

“I’m sure Brian’s now looking at ways to improve the team even more so, because they’ve taken a step in the right direction, in terms of getting this team on track. To be competitive and entertaining and to excite the fan base that way, I’m sure he’s very excited.”
