Why couldn’t this happen after Friday?

Because then Phaneuf couldn’t destroy him?

Let’s just hope that he doesn’t have one of those I’ll-play-really-well-in-my-first-game-with-a-new team things that always happen.

Of course, Phaneuf, Giguere, and Sjostrom are too naturally talented for that to happen. I fully expect them to play even better tomorrow night.

by laser358 on Feb 4, 2010 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

Lou is a sly fox

Oduya isn’t outperforming his contract any more, Bergfors is probably only a second line talent and Cormier can’t even top 1.0 PPG as a 19 yr old in the Q. He’ll try to win a Cup in a wide-open year and then trade Ilya’s negotiating rights for a 2nd (conceivable if J-Bo fetched a 3rd) before the UFA deadline. Plus he frees up about $4.5MM in cap space.

by The '67 Sound on Feb 4, 2010 8:57 PM EST reply actions

yeah

Lou is stupid like a Fox.

I hope Dion ends his season tomorrow though. Cleanly. No dirty stuff. And no head injuries. Just shatters the bones in his arms or something.

Loving the Leafs is like being in love with a drug-addled, gambling addicted prostitute with a heart of gold and a bunch of humanitarian awards from her youth. It’s hard. It hurts. But dammit! I just love them!

I thought Kov was on an expiring contract

so how would they be able to sell him AFTER they’d won a cup with him?

trade his rights, you cant negotiate a new contract until July 1st, you can trade his rights before that so said team (ie calgary with Boumiester) can negotiate and sign him to a contract before july 1st and the player gets to test the market

J-BO and others did this. You trade for exclusive negotiating rights pre-expiry.

by The '67 Sound on Feb 4, 2010 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

Presumably the value of this depends entirely on how reasonable you think the guy will be in negotiations. Like if you think Kov wants max money, then if you aren’t willing to offer it to him in your exclusive period, he will politely sit across from you and smile until the deadline then walk for free to someone else.

If you are willing to meet his demands then it makes sense to get first dibs on him.

Has this guy ever had such a supporting cast?White, Antro, and someone I can’t remember… Oh boy. How will he do in the Devils system? This is interesting. But yeah, I hope Dion puts him in the second row. Beyond tomorrow night, I don’t know. How will he perform against Ovy and/or Crosby in the playoffs? That could determine his payday.

by Leaf in Habland on Feb 4, 2010 9:16 PM EST via mobile reply actions

The Devils may just become a 2-line threat on offense. Have Kovy and Parise pop some goals, Brodeur make the saves and lock things down on D. Pittsburgh and Washington are now officially on notice.

To be honest, I don’t think he had a choice. I don’t think other teams were lining up with better offers, especially since they weren’t allowed to negotiate a contract extension with his agent before the trade. Waddell better hope Bergfors is good.

by unavoidable on Feb 4, 2010 9:46 PM EST up reply actions

On that note, you witnessed the stubbornness of Kovalchuk today, he had the most money thown at him then any player in NHL history and he turned it down. That can’t be a good sign of things. Not many GM’s would want that much of a prima donna on their hands.

Even a Kovy sized one. Dion cost us more than this, depending how you value first round picks.

The Devils traded for 27 regular season games of Kovalchuk (plus as far as they can go in the post-season).

The Leafs traded for 353 regular season games of Phaneuf (plus Sjostrom and a prospect).

I certainly see how a comparison can be made.

Honestly though. The trade is a steal for the Devils. They didnt give up anyone spectacular and got a real high end talent. If they can sign him to a deal at the end of the season, theyre gonna be good until Brodeur retires.

Toronto Maple Leafs: Bringin' The Pain Since 2009

by LeafFan1989 on Feb 4, 2010 10:41 PM EST reply actions

Crap, they just might be able to do it, too. They currently have about $16.5MM in cap space for next year with 9 roster spots open. Martin will need to be re-signed and coming off the injury they might be able to do it for $4MM. All their other UFAs and RFAs make between $500K and $1MM and their top 8 forwards, top 3 D and (obviously) #1 goalie are locked up. If you assume the other seven guys for a 23 man roster can be resigned for an average of $750,000, that means almost $8MM left for Kovy… he just might do it for the chance to play for a winner.

Ah, the luxuries of having a star goalie making $5.2MM and paying your entire defence less than Komi, Beauch & Finger.

by The '67 Sound on Feb 5, 2010 9:18 AM EST up reply actions

But Kovi has also given off the impression that he not only wants to play for a winner, but in a big hockey market. NJ?

Close enough to New York to count, maybe?

Not sure I’d see it that way since the Devils seem to be the red-headed stepchild compared to the Isles and especially the Rangers. If Lou wants to keep Kovy beyond this year I think he’s going to have to put the hard sell on.

by CanadianMaple09 on Feb 5, 2010 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

Lou's astute assumption

is that if he’s going to keep up with the Malkin’s, Crosby’s and Ovechkin’s in the eastern finals, he’ll need more firepower. Kovalchuk fills that role ten times over.

Not since his acquisition of Mogilny have the Devils had such a talented, pure offensive zone threat. With Broduer in net, and the usual cast of Whatshisnames and Thatguys playing the system to a “T”, Lamoriello has given Lemaire a weapon to use for offense, and one that will drive teams into a defensive posture.

Add to all of that, his usual savvy at the trade table, and he paid pennies on the dollar for all this. I know Waddell is generally incompetent (or at least rumored to be) but I find it hard to believe there wasn’t more attractive offers out there for this guy. My only assumption is that Kovalchuk’s rumored asking price for his next contract must have kept teams away. Oh well, he just made the finals that more interesting…

Brilliant.

I have nothing interesting to say.

by PPP on Feb 5, 2010 8:20 AM EST up reply actions

scary thought

but this year Miller’s been good enough to shut down any of those teams.

Buffalo’s record against ATL (Kovy’s former team), WSH and PIT this season is 4-4-0-1. The save percentage (which could be a combo of Miller and Lalime, but I’m inclined to think Miller faced the big guns) is 0.923, just a bit lower than his season avg of 0.932. If you include NJD in the equation, the SV% jumps up to 0.931.

Considering the playoffs are always a tight checking affair, my inclination is that the Devils have the advantage now, as Brodeur can keep the pucks out, and Kovy and Elias can put the pucks in. Closest equivalant has to be PIT with Crosby, Malkin and Fleury, but MAAF is no Brodeur. WSH will likely ride Theodore with Varlamov back in the AHL now. Miller could be as good (or almost as good as) Brodeur (scary thought, but he’s really, really good…) one day, but beyond Vanek, who runs hot and cold, they don’t have a legitimate scoring threat.

I have nothing interesting to say.

Does anyone else think Waddell miscalculated in one move he made.

He should have made a statement that the negotiations with Kovalchuk had come to an end.

I would NOT have mentioned the 101m 12 year deal. Let the guy you trade with worry about that.

I think it scared off potential teams that wanted to do a trade-and-sign than it helped to drum up business

My first reaction when I heard what he had turned down was “WHAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?” No way Kovalchuk is worth that much and for that long. I have to imagine most general managers scoffed at that and immediately filed him in the “Don’t Want” pile.
