You'll Never Guess Who Got Traded Last Night
So I wanted to write some neat little blurb here about the Kovalchuk trade, but then that little blurb ballooned into what is now over 700 words of a FanPost that I'll post later today/tonight. So be on the lookout for it.
If you want some information on or want to talk about the Kovalchuk trade, then head on over to the SBNation's Devils and Thrashers blogs:

Kovalchuk ( I almost typed Kovalchunk. huh.) Is something the Devils need. Not just because he can score, but because Marty Brodeur is not the Highlander and he will not tend goal forever. Unless they seriously luck out with their next number one guy, they will need to start doing the whole ‘score more goals than the other guys’ thing to win games.
Can it before I drive this truculence through your faceulence and put you in an ambulance.

Well the Leafs and Devils certainly made playing each other 3 times in a week really exciting.

so true. Imagine if the Leafs and Devils also played Calgary this week?

Too bad Washington and NJD don’t play again. That’d have been interesting. You know, Ovechkin vs Kovalchuk with an actual winning hockey team around each.

No kidding. This was going to be a super borefest. Now it’s been the talk of hockey twice in 4 days!

From when they played last Friday
How many roster players have been shipped out and in total for the teams?
Leafs -6 +2

I think tonight goes to Giggy. Play the hot guy. Although I’d rather leave him for the Sens on Saturday night. Welcome to HNIC Giggy!

I think Giggy goes tonight, and Monster tomorrow. If I had an ego like Burke’s, I’d want to beat the Devils and get them out of my trade limelight.
I've always wanted to be a PPP Princess. You see kids, you can be anything you want to be; so long as Jay Leno doesn't also want to be that.
no kidding, if I’m Burke I want Phaneuf to toss Kovalchuk around the ice like a rag doll. And win. Win big.

This is why I love having Dion. One of the biggest things that came up in my text messages with my buddies about the trade last night was “at least Dion will destroy Kovalchuk, etc, etc, Dion will take care of him, yada, yada”

I think if Giguere’s up to it, he’ll play both nights.
I have nothing interesting to say.

I think he will play both too. I think he play tonight for sure! I think everyone on the Leafs wants to shut down the Kovey hype. I know i do.
I thought I heard somewhere they wanted to get the Monster in one of these back to back games, but I could be wrong. Giguere could probably handle doing both, he’s not overworked due to Hiller on the Ducks, we know that much.
leaf fan stuck in ottawa, a localized black hole that will suck everything in that area to oblivion.
agreed on the overworked bit.
Just wondering if Wilson will defer to Giguere, who as a vet will have a better grasp on his fatigue levels. Seems with Gustavsson, they knew coming into the season, even before the ablation, that he wasn’t going to play every game. With Giguere they now have a guy who can play 50+ games a seson, as he’s averaged 56 a year since becoming the defacto #1 in ANA.
I have nothing interesting to say.

The understanding i had was that Giggy was going to take the bulk of the rest of the games this season. He is not tired. He played one game this week. I’m sure he will be more than fine to start back to back nights. In fact, i bet he starts all but one game leading up to the Olympics. This is not Toskalol we are talking about here.

I just REALLY liked the implication that the Leafs were going to win the Cup.

it works because that was the whole “glitch in the matrix” thing anyway.

Does anyone know
if NJ ticket sales went up like 400%, or is it only 200%?? I am actually suspecting there to be fans in the seats tonight.
Phaneuf Phever, an upgrade in skill and alliteration!
it can’t be as bad as the Nets. I saw them on SportsCenter last week and they only had half of the lower bowl filled.
They’ve also only won 4 games all season. lol.
Phaneuf Phever, an upgrade in skill and alliteration!
To be fair, a team as bad as the Nets in Toronto would have trouble drawing fans. They are possibly the worst team in the history of the NBA

The Phoenix Coyotes have been outdrawn by the ECHL Toledo Walleye for 5 games this season.

NBA attendence is not exactly blowing NHL out of the water year in and year out as a whole.

Yeah seriously, I’m uber-surprised at how few people are in the stands when they show NBA highlights. Funny that the NHL always gets the rap as being the most in trouble. I think the NBA is still suffereing from having had Bettman as their VP.
Phaneuf Phever, an upgrade in skill and alliteration!
Yeah
And the NBA has serious issues with competitiveness and their luxury tax system.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
I think the Lakers pay more luxury tax than the Nets pay in salary

so true, even though they’re ratings aren’t really huge compared to NHL, like 50% more on average?

Jersey never sells out, ever. And there’s a big snow storm on the way so I doubt the game tonight will be attended en masse.

‘big snow storm’; like the flurries that they had last time?

If I was a devils fan, I’d make the trip. Then have a giant sleepover when we get snowed in.

Got in to TO for the weekend last night and as the cab took me up Bathurst. I saw the shinny going on at Alexandra Park (I think that’s it, or Scadding Court?). Anyway, what did I see but a bright red (yeah still Flames but still) Phaneuf jersey skating around. Gotta love that!

forgot to mention
when i opened this up and saw the headline with a pick of Phaneuf, I thought Burke flipped him for somebody else…
suffice to say, i was momentarily befuddled
