Horrible News
I honestly fear what gay bashers are going to do with this.
Columbus: It's amazing how fast the world can go from bad to total shit storm.
Or the Leafs season: either one works
I doubt
You’ll hear anything.
I don’t remember hearing much after the story of his coming out broke, I doubt they’d rejoice in his death
Willing to trade humour for cash, straight up.
I certainly hope not.

Oh, I wouldn’t be too surprised to hear a “he got what he deserved” from some of the more extreme sects, like those “God hates Gay people” groups.

Yeah
But let’s not worry about that right now.

Yeah
That’s what I would worry about.

A crash in Wayne County Indiana claims the lives of two people Friday afternoon.
The wreck happened just north of Richmond on U.S. 35 near Economy.
Police said U.S. 35 was closed for several hours.
A black jeep lost control and slid into the westbound lane of the highway and hit another vehicle head-on, police said.
Mark Reedy, 18, from Missouri, and 21-year-old Brendan Burke, from Massachusetts, were both killed, police said.

Heavy accumulations of snowfall on Friday rendered area roads treacherous and claimed the lives of two people, injuring others and sparking a string of slideoffs and fender benders.
Brendan Burke, 21, Canton, Mass., and Mark A. Reedy, 18, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., died at the scene of a two-vehicle accident at U.S. 35 north of Economy. The accident was reported at 2:50 p.m.
Investigators said Burke was driving eastbound on U.S. 35 in a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee when, according to witnesses, the vehicle slid sideways into an oncoming 1997 Ford Truck driven by 24-year-old Michael Moreland of Lynn. Moreland was not hurt.
Ninety minutes later, a two-vehicle collision left 20-year-old Kenneth Burns of Richmond in critical condition with internal injuries at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.
State police said Burns was driving a 1991 Honda Civic south on U.S. 27 near Pleasant Plain Road when he lost control of the vehicle on the ice- and snow-covered roadway. His Honda rotated counterclockwise into the northbound lane and was struck in the passenger door by a 2000 Freightliner driven by Thomas Rauch, 46, Fort Wayne, Ind.
Authorities responded to more than 115 calls for service in Wayne County. The Indiana State Police reported that they responded to more than 25 accidents, mostly slideoffs, on Interstate 70 in Henry County between mile markers 134 and 123. The accidents caused traffic to stall for hours.
"I won’t say it’s abnormal, but it’s been extremely busy," Wayne County Chief Deputy Jeff Cappa said.

Geez
Sounds like it’s far too dangerous to be out driving.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
It is.
Most of the areas that are getting hit can’t deal with even 4 inches of snow. We’re not talking about Upstaters or Canadians. My sister in DC has work canceled due to the THREAT of snow. Not because any fell.

So sad to hear this
I was very moved by Brendan’s story.
Two dead in this accident? Terrible. I’m a few hours away (Chicago), worried about the snow conditions out there…

As Brendan’s story was one of the most refreshing and impressive stories I’d heard in the sports world in a very long time.
He was a brave kid and it’s heartbreaking to see him leave us at so young an age.
Hopefully his legacy will live on and continue to help those in the future who are too scared to make their voices known.

Wow, I came here to vent about another disappointing loss and didn’t expect to read about this tragic story. It certainly helped put things in perspective. It’s an absolute tragedy and my thoughts go out to Burkie and his family… I can’t imagine the pain they’re going through.

Oh my...
Who cares about the Leafs loss, this is a pretty bad loss. A guy like him comes along once every while, and he’s one of the few people who had the courage to come out in an environment where gay people would most likely be in the closet. Brendan did not deserve this fate. A shame all the good people must go. My condolences to the Burke Family

Normally a story like this wouldn’t really bother me in any way.. Maybe I would think “wow, that’s shitty, I feel bad for his family” or something like that but pass it off. But after reading that ESPN story about what he went through, man. I feel awful about this. What a sad story.
And obviously, to echo the sentiments of others, condolences to the other victim’s family as well. Just terrible terrible news.
As a Miami alumni
I am so sad to see this. The roads here have been very icy with freezing rain and that’s more of a rural area. Brendan was the student manager of Miami’s hockey team. I know all of the guys came out in support of Brendan and he was loved by them all. It’s just such a tragic loss. My thoughts and prayers are with both the Miami University hockey team and the Burke family. You will be missed sweetie

It certainly seems like the conditions are extremely dangerous. There have already been 25 accidents. I hope people will get off the road.

My heart goes out to Brendan’s parents. I can’t comprehend the pain they must be going through right now. A parent’s worst nightmare has to be the thought of burying one of your own children. To his siblings, the loss must be equally difficult. So sad. I’m honestly at a loss for words.
Prayers and condolences to the Burke and Reedy families.
I have nothing interesting to say.

My deepest condolences to the Burke and Reedy families. I work where im faced with the possibility of death happening right in front of me but hearing things like this especially after all that has gone on with him, being so brave and having such love that his family had for him just break my heart.
Sounds silly to say...
…considering what the families are going through, but this is sitting on me like a ton of bricks. What a sad day.
Condolences.

Very sad news, you hate to see people die at such a young age, and I always deeply fear these kind of things happening in the winter season. A hockey game means absolutely nothing in the face of this tragedy. All I can do is express condolences to the Burke and Reedy families.

Truly awful news to hear about the loss of Brendan not just because he was Brian Burke’s son but for brave way Brendan sought to live his life and share his story not for himself, but also for so many out there who are afraid to share there own. It was one of realest sports stories in a long time and my heart goes out to the Burke family in this time of grief and hope this like Brendan’s story puts hockey as a sport into perspective again.
Not really sure what to say ‘cause I find this rather shocking and less abstract than most news of this type, yet I don’t really know why.
My condolences and sympathies to the Burke and Reedy families.

Also
Are you kidding me Kevin McGran:
Brendan Burke – the gay son of Leaf general manager Brian Burke – has been killed in a car accident, caused at least in part by a snowstorm.
Now, before anyone gets the wrong idea – I take no issue with Brendan being gay whatsoever, and I hope what I’m going to explain below isn’t misinterpreted as such.
Essentially, I have an issue with using the word gay in the first line of that story because Brendan being gay is what he was, not necessarily who he was. Think of it this way, if it had been one of Burke’s other children children in the accident, would McGran have called them “the straight child” of Brian Burke? I doubt it.
When it comes to that introduction, Brendan should have been Brian Burke’s son, end of story. You can talk about his coming out later in the article, and I take no issue with any reporter doing so, but to define him first and foremost as Brian Burke’s gay son, as opposed to simply his son, works to set him apart from everyone else in a manner that is, frankly, dehumanizing.
Hell, up above you’ll see Cox getting it right, and it’s Cox! He doesn’t get anything right.
I hope Burke smacks McGran in the face next time he see’s him.

The world needs more people like Brendan Burke to remind us of tolerance and acceptance, and to stand as an example for bravery and resilience. It’s people like him that truly enact change and progress in the world. What a loss. My deepest condolences to the Burke and Reedy families for their loss.
