Pension Plan Puppets 101
As some of you may have noticed, our little corner of the internet is growing. There has been a pretty huge influx of new members over the last couple of months and I realised that we did not have too much easily available on how to use the various site features or the rules of the road so I wanted to take a few minutes to run a "Pension Plan Puppets 101" class*. There will not be a quiz at the end**.
*glove tap to Blueshirt Banter for the inspiration
** There will be a quiz at the end
If you have any questions about the content of this post, feel free to ask.
Community Guidelines: I've decided to set out more detailed community guidelines. They can be found here. Everyone, whether old or new, should read it right now. It, along with the user guides, can be found in the left-hand sidebar. Basically it boils down to this:
We are all here we love the Toronto Maple Leafs and love talking about them in depth and to death. Let's treat each other with respect. Feel free to disagree with anyone's opinion but do it respectfully. Remember there is a right way and a wrong way to talk to people. Quite honestly, some of spend a good portion of our day on this site and we want to make it as enjoyable as it can be. The Overlords and the Princesses and the Contributors all do this because we enjoy it. The second you start ruining our enjoyment you are likely doing something wrong and are not long for this site.
Trolls will pop in from time to time. The best thing to do is probably to ignore them but that's not as much fun as crushing them with wit and logic. Then Chemmy or I can crush them under our bootheels.
Profile Pictures: This is a way of replacing the generic SBN star and lets you customize your profile.
Photos: In many of our stories you will see pictures that are provided courtesy of the Associated Press. If you click on that photo, you will be brought to a gallery of related photos.
FanPosts: Have something you want to discuss? Something that's not getting the attention it deserves? Not reading what interests you? Write it up. It is simple enough that Senators fans do it. If it's really good you might see it on the front page. If it really flaunts the guidelines, you might find it deleted.
FanShots: These are meant to be quick hit items (videos, quotes, links, lists). Check if it's been posted before because I'll delete repeated material.
Tagging: Tagging fanshots and fanposts properly ensures that the SBN magic built into the platform works to its fullest. When you click through to a story, fanpost, or fanshot proper tagging ensures that the most relevant related stories, fanposts, and fanshots appear. Not doing so means that I have to do it and that makes me cranky.
Commenting: This is your main avenue for contributing to the site. Offer up your thoughts on the posts or on other commenters' comments. But please, for the Love of Wendel, use capitals, punctuation, and spell as well as you can. No one's expecting you to mimic Howard Berger's use of a thesaurus but if u rite lik dis eye will h8 u 4eva. Also, I'll delete your comments.
Player rosters and Schedule: At the top of the home page, there is a tab for "players". By clicking the tab, you can see the player page for every player on the Maple Leafs roster along with all their stats. The Maple Leafs' schedule is also there.
Game Day Threads: During every Maple Leafs game there is a game day thread if you want to chat with fellow Maple Leaf fans. Wrap Around Curl is the boss. When she says 'keep it cute or put it on mute' she means 'follow the rules'. Do that and everything will be fun. Usually at least one or two other members of the PPP team are in there. The threads go live 30 minutes before the puck drops unless I forgot that Wrap told me she couldn't make it.
PPP Dictionary: Ever wonder what the "!!!1" at the end of words means? What are the inside jokes? Well, check out the site dictionary and then you're on the inside too. Welcome, it's dark and scary but funny.
Post Topics: There are a few posts that are done every day. One is the Chatty Cathy. That's where all non-hockey talk gets corraled. Drop in, introduce yourself. The other is the From The Branches morning links roundup. If you have a Leafs blog e-mail me and we'll make sure you get added to our Google Readers. If you're missed or have links to share this is the place for general hockey talk. Every other post should try to stay on topic as much as possible.
Share us on Facebook: Also at the bottom of every story, you will see a button to share the story on Facebook. If you like the story, share us.
"Re-tweet" us!: If you are on Twitter, you can click the "Re-tweet" button at the bottom of every story and share it with your followers.
Follow us on Twitter: Your Pension Plan Puppets team can all be followed on Twitter! Here is how to find the folks that make this site run smoothly:
@mlse - PPP
@felixpotvin - Chemmy (Note: if you message him as if he was the real Felix Potvin he won't correct you)
@wraparoundcurl - Wrap Around Curl, finally, an easy one.
@SkinnyFishbowl - SkinnyFish
@gottabe_KD - Karina
@MattBelak - MattBlack
@mforbes37 - MF37
Also, if you follow any of us on Twitter, you can hunt and peck through our followers lists, and you will see that many of our great posters are on Twitter as well.
Email me: At the bottom of the home page, you can email some of us. If you have an idea for something you would like to see on the site, or if you have a comment, complaint, or compliment, let me know and then I'll delegate the shit out of it. This site is for all of us, we want all of you to be a part of it, and we really do value your input. Note to trolls: any ludicrous hate mail will be published and mocked.
Oh go ahead and register, you know you want to: If you've been lurking, don't be afraid to join the conversation! We're all Leafs fans and we all have pretty diverse opinions and haven't killed each other yet so odds are you won't be the first. Even if you don't want to contribute the link will explain why registering makes your lurking experience better.
And with that, the class is over. Taking the time to read through all of the links will be beneficial to everyone so please, at your convenience, take a stroll through them. Now, for the quiz: Who is your favourite Maple Leaf of all-time?

I come here to get away from the rules of my life (by this I mean the wife, aka. Prego).
Just kidding, I think I’ve been following them already. I’m glad that this place is growing so quickly; it shows just how big Leafs Nation is, and how many people love the Maple Leafs. Keep up the good work, PPP and thanks for giving us this place.

I deleted some because frankly they should have been comments.

Dammit, PPP, can’t you add something to the rules about “Leafs Nation”? As I’ve mentioned before, I think that’s a phrase that could use a little crushing from the bootheels of some overlord somewhere.
Ahh, I’m just kidding. Mostly.

What do you have against the term Leafs Nation? It’s not just some term used by MSM to refer to Leafs fans in a negative way, it is in fact the moniker used by the Maple Leafs team themselves to refer to their fan base.
It’s the name of the teams magazine/game program (http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=42372) and it’s also a great marketing tool used to expose the team to new or potentially new fans (http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=58308), which is probably pretty hard to do in a city like Toronto where half the population was born in a foreign country. I agree they can sometimes go to far and border on exploitation, but remember this is a big business in this country.
I don’t have a problem with term, and I don’t believe that most other Leafs fans do either. Personally, I have no problem calling myself a member of the Leafs Nation. It identifies me as a proud Leafs fan, just like some idiots are proud of being part of the Sens Army.

I think it’s a generic marketing construct foisted upon us by team management, and I think we deserve better. I wrote about it here.
I think Leaf fans are unique, or if not unique, then very different from the fanbases of other teams. I wish we had something of our own, something distinctive instead of a tired clone.

I agree. I hate the term for the same reasons I hate the “Canada’s Team” song — it’s hokey, arrogant, and makes us sound like a barrel of douchebags.
I’d prefer something simple like ‘Leafs Fans’ or ‘Leafs Disciples’ or ‘The Church of Wendel Clark of Latter Day Saints’

Leafs Nation = 1984
Sounds "1984"ish. Barilkosphere is from the grass roots, not the idea of some suit in a platinum seat. I second the idea of crushing L… N… under the boot heel of the PPP overlords, princesses, and contributors. Heck! Let’s just sit on it and crush it with the weight of our love for the Leafs…and of our well-thought-out comments.

Also, I wonder how many people have ripped “Toskala” off the back of their jerseys to stitch “Giguere” on
Anyone who still has a Toskala jersey should be horse-whipped out of town.

From now on, when you do see sometime is a Toskala jersey, you have my permission to kick them square in the nuts.
I've always wanted to be a PPP Princess. You see kids, you can be anything you want to be; so long as Jay Leno doesn't also want to be that.
ESPECIALLY if the jersey in question is a Ducks jersey, and the guy in question is wearing a Mickey Mouse shirt and carrying a manpurse.

Rough, losing to the Sabres. I hated them like I hate Philly. I started following them before I started school.
I was a “leafs fan” starting in 89, but that was just a little kid saying he liked the leafs because his dad, uncles and grandfather did. I became a true fan in 92 when i was old enough that my dad let me stay up and watch the games

That season and the 98-99 seasons were my favourites because of the guys on each team and the deep playoff runs, especially because in both cases they were pretty much unexpected.

My Leafs fandom dates to about 1980 (my first favourite Leaf was Bill Derlago) which I think makes Dougie even more important to me (and my generation of Leafs fans). It’s hard to imagine being a Leafs fan in the 1980s. Post-lockout has been bad but it’s a cakewalk compared to the 80s. People tell me know “it must suck being a Leafs fan”, and I say “This is nothing! I survived the 80s”.
The endless losing, the botching of draft picks and prospects, the contemptuous regime of Ballard, the constant mocking from virtually everyone at school (seriously, in a class of 60 I think 4 of us were Leafs fans). And for my generation, we had never known anything better! At least the Leafs had a few good teams in the 70s and had that big first round win with the OT game over the Isles. We had a losing season every single year except that “glorious” 1990 campaign where we were .500.
And then Dougie changed ALL of that. I know other guys played a big role on those teams but Dougie was payback for all the shit we suffered through for 12 years.
by The '67 Sound on Feb 9, 2010 1:01 PM EST up reply actions
Here's a first:
I loved Douggie back in the day, but I was 7 years old in ‘93. I can remember being so sad that I didn’t want to do anything for a couple days, but I don’t remember what it was like to watch him play. So for my favorite Leaf, I’m going with Dominic Moore. Yeah. That’s right. You read that correctly. That idiot that priced himself out of Toronto. I was sad to see that guy go. He was nearly talentless, but was always a problem for the other team because for that one year, he was the single hardest-working player to wear a Leaf uniform since the lockout.
When he was here
he was the freakin’ man.
The Luck of the Irish Leaf: Because when the Irish are short on luck, at least there's tons of booze.
I was 7 in ’93 too but I think that could be why I loved Douggie so much…nostalgic childhood memories are always better
by Sonic_Screwdriver on Feb 9, 2010 7:12 PM EST up reply actions
Doug Gilmour
I’m a child of the 80s. I loved Wendel, but in terms of maximizing the most gain out of god-given talents, it has to be Dougie. Absolutely unparalled in his dedication and work ethic and desire to do absolutely anything it takes to win. He played to 127% of his capacity in his entire tenure as a Leaf.
Dougie literally carried the team on his back and made something out of nothing. I was absolutely heartbroken when i saw Gilmour go down in that Calgary game after we re-acquired him for one last run, because I knew that Toronto fans would be robbed of the opportunity to give him the 10-minute ovation he deserved.
That said, the most talented Leaf I’ve ever seen is Sundin.
As far as the unheralded players, some of my lesser known faves include Tucker, Markov and Yushkevich — mainly for their shared predilection for spitting out Chiclets. I will never forget Danny Markov leaving the ice in the playoffs one year against Ottawa with some sort of serious injury and yelling “YOU LOSE ANYWAY” at their entire bench. Awesome.
Dmitri was a tough SOB

Remember that one series against the Flyers when the doctors told Yushkevich he couldn’t play because of some blood clot issue in his leg, and that by playing he’d be risking death? Remember how pissed Yushkevich was when the team wouldn’t let him play ? That’s the attitude our players need. I loved Yushkevich too.

Wendel Clark, is my favorite Leaf.
I think Dave Keon is my Dad’s favorite from when he was growing up.
Kyle Wellwood’s favorite Leaf is most likely Turk Broda, because I don’t think anyone else got more attention about their weight. :)
They used to make Turk Broda weign in before games because he was put on a strict diet by Leaf management.
Can you imagine if
a) this happened to Wellwood? or
b) the internet/blogs/twitter was around back then?

Last season we got trounced by the Sharks. Score was 4-0 after the first period. Final score was 5-2. Only 7 Leafs from that game were still in the line up when we played the Sharks again, and one of those was Deveaux. The other six are: Kaberle, Kulemin, Mitchell, Poni, Schenn, and Stempniak. That’s it. Finger was there last year too, but wasn’t in the line up last night.

What the fuck you talkin’ about Willis?
I've always wanted to be a PPP Princess. You see kids, you can be anything you want to be; so long as Jay Leno doesn't also want to be that.

Don't get me wrong...
I loved Wendel, but my formative years were spent with Mogilny and Sundin. Wendel was traded away when I was 8 years old.
My father was once able to break down the Leafs by Seinfeld characters. Mogilny was Kramer.
“Could you have an episode of Seinfeld without Kramer? Yeah, probably, but it would suck.”

Arch, you are the living embodiment of that guy in the Dos Equis Ad – fatherly exposition of hockey players with reference to characters from Seinfeld?
This, I need to hear more about.

Hah...
Sundin was Jerry. “Without Jerry, there is no Seinfeld. Without Mats, there is no team.”
a young Nik Antropov was George “He just never get a break to go his way.”
and I believe Eddie was Elaine, for reasons I can’t quite remember.
