Did Marc Crawford's son break the Lehtonen trade via twitter?
File this under harmless speculation for now, but there's an interesting discussion going on over twitter about who exactly got the scoop on the Lehtonen trade.
The earliest reference to the trade seems to have come from an account called @nhl_scoop, which tweeted "Kari Lehtonen traded to dallas stars for iven vishnevskey and 4th rd pick" around 5:00 EST. That was two hours before @ajcthrashers mentioned it, after which Bob McKenzie picked up the story (with credit).
So who is @nhl_scoop? Impossible to say since, after all, this is twitter. But two interesting observations about the account, other than the fact that it had the exact trade hours before anyone else:
1. This is the only tweet the account has ever made, and
2. The name on the account is "dylan crawford".
Stars coach Marc Crawford has a son named Dylan.
Now, this doesn't necessarily add up to Crawford's son leaking the trade. After all, I've heard people can sometimes pretend to be someone they're not on twitter. Crazy, but true.
And even if it is him, it's not the world's biggest scandal. If the deal was done, then word was getting out. It's bad form and a minor embarassment for old dad, but not the end of the world. Chances are, certain old-time media folks may make a bigger deal of this than anyone else would.
Still... hmm...
For what it's worth, various media including Bruce Garrioch and Dan Tencer are discussing this over twitter right now. So the story is, as they say, still developing.

Sort of like “insider trading” I guess…. except I’m not sure how one would profit from releasing the trade information 2 hours early.

At that point the paperwork may not have been approved by the NHL head office as of yet. Mostly just a formality but maybe problems.
Also if the agreement was in place but not signed at that point I can see it pissing people off.
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
My guess is teams are touchy about who gets to release this information (just like any other company would be). It may also be a problem if the deal was posted before all the players were spoken too.

If this is in fact a fake account,
I wish to hear Brian Burke’s opinion of this matter.
I've always wanted to be a PPP Princess. You see kids, you can be anything you want to be; so long as Jay Leno doesn't also want to be that.
This is the first I’ve heard of the trade. Huh. I wonder how quickly we would’ve heard “TAMPERING!” screamed out if it had involved the Leafs and Canucks.

I think the bigger story here is that with one post, this guy hasalready taken a 1-0 lead over Eklund in breaking trades this season.

And over the course of their careers this new guy is about 98% more accurate than Eklund.
