Lightning at Leafs: Seen Stamkos?
Puck Drop: 7PM Leafs-TV
If you haven't seen Steven Stamkos you really should try to. He's got points in 17 straight games (16G 15A 31Pts) and comes home to Ontario tonight with 41 goals: three behind Crosby and Ovechkin for the league lead.
The line of Stamkos Martin St. Louis and Steve Downie might be the best single line in the NHL right now. They're scoring at a torrid pace as the Lightning. five points out of a playoff berth, look to make the postseason.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere starts against Antero Niittymaki. Tampa's goals against have been an issue for them lately: they've given up 35 goals in their past seven games. On the flip side the Toronto Maple Leafs have only scored 11 goals in their past seven games so something has to give.
Let's hope the Leafs show up to play unlike the last game against Tampa on the 23rd of January. Since that time we've added Phaneuf and our penalty kill has undergone a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde transformation. PPP isn't sure off the top of his head but the PK is over 90% since adding Phaneuf.
With any luck Stamkos won't score four to take the goal scoring lead in front of his friends and family at the ACC.

I said this on twitter
But Jonas wins his last 2 starts but Giguere starts? That’s real fair.

Gustavsson has looked shaky

I don’t think it’s about being fair. Ron Wilson indicated that the two of them will alternate starts from now on.

Bingo
RW isn’t playing the “you win you play” card anymore. He’s evaluating his goaltenders for the rest of the season.

I disagree.
This system failed us hard when we tried to keep playing Toskala. He would just shit the bed the next game.
Then again…
It’s Toskala.

It's not an excuse
I just don’t believe in the “You win you play” system
The dirty habs use it and their goaltending future couldn’t be more uncertain.
We’re trying to evaluate our goaltending right now. Unless you have an elite #1 goalie, going with the same one night in night out will only wear them out (maybe not physically, but mentally… there was a discussion about this on a prior post)

I agree, its really stupid with this many games left and our current place in the standings. We want to see what both guys have to offer so we can evaluate what we want to do next season.
Phaneuf Phever, an upgrade in skill and alliteration!
So if Giguere loses tonite and Gustavsson wins on Saturday, you still gonna go with that approace?
Fairweather fans can go to hell
Yes. And until we have a clear #1, I don’t like the “you win you play”
I see the merits of it and why people like it, but I just don’t agree that its the best way to run a goaltending situation like ours.

Ci Senor
Its not really about winning. If Giggy loses tonight and Giguere loses Saturday, it means that Giggy had a bad game and Jonas had a good one (if goaltending is even the reason we lost). At least if we alternate we have at least 10 games at the end of each guy to evaluate Jonas’ contract situation and what we do with Giggy.
Phaneuf Phever, an upgrade in skill and alliteration!
what we do with Giggy
Giggy is gonna play out his final year in TO. He wont waive his NMC again
Fairweather fans can go to hell
I think he means in terms of how often he gets start vs. Gustavsson.
Although I feel like unless Giggy really shits the bed, he’ll be taking a bunch of starts, No less than 50-60% in 2010-2011

It’s all about goal support. Gustavsson gave up 3 against Boston, Giguere gave up 3 against a better team.
A “win” is a stat out of the goalie’s control. Neither Gustavsson nor Giguere have made a strong case for being the #1 on this team.

Its weird, but I have no memory of our goaltending between September 2006 and Jan 2010.

What the fuck?
We had goaltending during that time frame? Dear Lord, it must have been shitty as a manure pile!
by leafsfan4life94 on Mar 11, 2010 10:01 PM EST up reply actions
Perhaps, but the Leafs have no idea what they have in either Gustavsson or Giguere at this point, other than sunk costs. Gustavsson’s contract is up, Giguere has a massive cap-hit that needs determining whether to keep or not, and the team is close to last place. Goaltending is such a sore spot for the Leafs, I think the team is willing to sacrifice predictability for results.
I’m sure if one of the goalies takes the reins and really runs with it (I think the Leafs would prefer it to be Gustavsson), then Wilson will decide on playing the better goalie for the majority of games. At this point, neither goalie has been that much better than the other one.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
Another factor is that instead of letting Giggy’s contract just run out, we could trade him at next year’s deadline at which point his cap hit would be more manageable to the acquiror.
Giggy’s playing for a contract next year so should be motivated. Think a former Conn Smythe winner might have some value to a contender if he’s playing well?

This was brought up before as a possibility… but I’m pretty sure his NMC will still hold, and Burke will almost certainly not ask him to waive it, especially since the NMC mostly has to do with his son’s health issues.
I like the idea… but practically I don’t think it’ll ever happen.
Leafs Nation: A drinking team with a hockey problem.

Agreed
Giguere was only willing to lift his NTC for only a handful of teams, and Toronto was at the top. I’m not sure if he’ll lift it again, nor would Burke ask him to lift it. What the Leafs are hoping for is that Giguere and Gustavsson split starts next season where Gustavsson gets 5-10 more starts than Giggy.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
I read somewhere the Leafs were the only team he would accept a trade too
Fairweather fans can go to hell
Sounds about right, his relationship with Burke and the fact we were the only team with cap space and in need of a goalie kind of put the writing on the wall.

His son needs a lot of care, that’s why Burke gave him the NMC so he can stay at a hospital in Cali. So when the oppurtunity to come to Toronto came up he said ok because Sick Kids can treat his son

Nobody thinks Giggy would leave town for a few months for a Cup run? Besides, Leafs won’t re-sign him for 2011/12. He’ll have to either retire or move anyway.
Agree with Karina that his level of play is obviously a big if.
by The '67 Sound on Mar 11, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions
He didn’t ask to be traded away to a playoff team in Anaheim, so no, I don’t think it’s something the Leafs can bank on for next season. The Leafs traded for Giguere fully aware they’re keeping him until the end of his contract.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
Look on the bright side. Unlike so many other players, Giguere actually wanted to come to Toronto. I say we’re moving up in the hockey destination world. Take that, Edmonton.

In Toronto, players won’t waive their NTC’s to leave there.

I am biased towards Giguere, but I don’t know that he’ll ever regain his Conn Smythe form.

Giggy vs Gustavsson
I don’t think the “guy who wins gets to play again” approach is applicable when there is 16 games left and no hope of the playoffs. This is about Gustavsson’s career now. Alternating him into the net gives him extra rest, more practice, while allowing him to know he’s playing and get prepared. It’s training wheels for goalies.
Next season this may change. You can bet your ass Burke and Wilson will both want to be much further up the standings. Best goalie will play. My hope is that by 20011/2012, Gustavsson is the starter and Giguere is playing 20 games making $2.5M a year.
I’d really like to see Giggy brought in for a couple years as a backup, on the cheap

And his salary is a contentious point as well. If Giguere is willing to play for even half his current salary, I think there are a few teams willing to give him a chance as starter depending on how the season and playoffs end up.
