Maple Leafs 1 v Islanders 4 v Hockey Fans 0
Well, I called this morning the worst of the year and it apparently rubbed off on the Leafs as they played their first truly horrible effort since the Carolina game. I said it about some other disappointing game but I won't be as upset if this is just a blip. The powerplay led by irreplaceable quarterback Tomas Kaberle went 0-of-7 and was every bit the 29th ranked powerplay in the league. Not that being useless was it's only quality. It also managed to cough up a short-handed goal which will no doubt be chosen by AM640 as their Ridiculous Sponsor Turning Point.
The game didn't start off bad as the continually great Nikolai Kulemin got the Leafs on the board in the first minute of the game. Allegedly lots of games in few days tired out the team. If so, these guys better have summer-long meetings with Gary Roberts because only terrible teams whine about being tired. The only good part of this game was that it happened early so there's still lots of time left tonight to do more interesting things like tear off my fingernails or waterboard myself.

You try keeping your head in the game when all you can remember is being woken up by that terribly annoying call of “Housekeeping?” at 10am.
But seriously, no excuses. Lame game.

this is just a guess, but i suspect that money doesn’t magically alter the physiological processes that make someone tired after not getting enough sleep.

No but it might provide a bit of motivation to work through the tiredness of having to live a cushy life.

Glad I missed most of this game – and also glad that what I saw was on a less than optimal online feed.

The Leafs had been putting in a really solid effort for over a week, it’s understandable that they hit a blip.
Don’t get me wrong, I want those 3 hours of my life back, but it’s a solid indication that the club has a long way to go. And that Kaberle needs to be traded. Like… the instant the window in his contract opens up.
BUT TOMAS KABERLE MAKES A GREAT FIRST PASS HOW DON’T YOU SEE THAT

Kabs did turn the puck over on that PK, but what was Beauch doing? It was his hesitancy that let Park walk right into the prime shooting lane.

They both blew it, though Kabs wears the bigger goat horns for the lazy turnover.

He’s just having trouble adjusting to his new teammates and coaching. Plus new-contract syndrome does funny things to players. Pavel Kubina admitted that he got away from his game his first year because of the contract weighing on his mind right? And he was pretty awesome after that, right?
Right?
actually, he wasn’t half bad.

Agreed, if Beauch plays as well as Kubina did the last couple years of his deal we should all be very happy.
Unfortunately that’s a pretty enormous “if”.

Unfortunately that’s the only thing we’re likely to lead the league in next year.
If the young forwards can develop fast, and if we get league-average goaltending, and if Beauch and Komi start to earn their contracts, and if Phaneuf returns to Norris candidate form, and if we can solve the PK, and if Gunnar doesn’t regress, and if Schenn improves, and if we stay healthy, and if…
My head hurts.

TOR v EDM ended around 9:30. Puck drop today was 5:00, and an hour lost to Daylight Savings Time. 18.5 hours from game to game, with travel involved?
I know it’s not the reason they lost (“we’re tired!” gets a “whaaaaammbulance” response from me), but it’s hard to look at that and expect a win from a young team like this.
Well the Isles are also a young team and played last night albeit without travel.

Like I said, not excusing the team, more commenting that this game was bound to be sloppy, lousy hockey, which I don’t think our kids are up to fumbling their way through. (Didn’t see the game, just heard it was low quality hockey)
Lookit,
when you are a low-talent team that wins games by pure hustle, then you have to have 100% jump to win. That means overtime and a short layover between games will kill you in a way that is far more deadly than for other team that can parlay actual talent into goals.
Good teams don’t use this as an excuse, but the Leafs aren’t good, and nobody pretended they were.
i totally fell asleep on my laptop, that game sucked

other things that would have been a better use of my time:
lighting farts on fire, trying to get my socks pregnant, “cleaning/studying/snuffleuppagusing/other made up stuff”, learning to breakdance.. anything but watch this piece of shit game
Dmitri Yushkevich was so tough, he once blocked a Chuck Norris kick with his teeth and finished the shift.
Beauchemin continually makes me feel embarassed over how excited I was when he first signed in Toronto. Ugh.
I liked Kulemin’s (my new favourite Leaf) and Grabovski’s play and/or energy. Bulk Grabovski up a bit in the offseason and he will be a slobbering beast, it’ll be great.
Kaberle is doing his part to keep us from feeling sad when he gets traded away as soon as the window opens up. Whatta guy!
Beauchemin continually makes me feel embarassed over how excited I was when he first signed in Toronto. Ugh.
There’s still time. Just been an inconsistent player this year, which isn’t surprising, since that was common in Anaheim, too. I think he works best with a puck mover, which seems like that is what Wilson is trying to do pairing him with Kaberle. But Kaberle’s struggles haven’t helped Beauchemin either.
I said before that I preferred Beauchemin over Komisarek during free agency, and I still believe it. We’ll see next season.

only terrible teams whine about being tired
and what gave you the impression that this Leafs team isn’t terrible?
They should read this quote:
Losers quit when they’re tired. Winners quit when they’ve won
A Nation of Masochists Waiting is the hardest part.
It was a shitty game but (other than Kaberle) I didn’t really notice anyone quitting. Fatigue does more than just make you feel sore, it inhibits your mental functions and alertness. At least half of our top 6 is not in NHL shape right now, it probably felt to them like they were giving the same effort but it was clear that they weren’t all there.
ooooh
I like that one.

With the time change and the early start, I feel like this game was a figment of my imagination. Like, it didn’t really happen. I’m totally okay with that. In fact, I’m going to just ignore any references to last night’s game and just pretend that I didn’t waste 2.5hrs of my early evening yesterday.
I missed this game… guess I didn’t really miss much.
Losing to the Islanders? I know we’re not a good team and all, but still… ew.
