Ovechkin gets a 2 game suspension and Frattin only get 1 for a much more dangerous hit? This is so unfair and just another example of the Colin Campbell and his Wheel of Justice getting things wrong.

Downie was a pretty good player in the OHL, not sure if this kid could produce at the same clip

No way dude. We need all sorts of Downie crazy on this team. But ONLY if we have a captain that can keep him on the edge, not over.

I want Tucker crazy.
The kind that jumps into the Ottawa bench, puts Sami Kapanen into next week, and scores 20 goals a year.
I don’t want “takes cheap shots at everybody” crazy.

Downie is gonna score 20 this year. Tucker took cheap shots. They are comparable players in my mind. Leafs need more crazy. Hopefully Frattin can be that, although I am not thrilled about the troubles with the law. We need on-ice crazy, off ice stoicism.

I’ll just be happy if he is a good player

Hmm. This should disappoint me, but yeah… I miss the crazy a LOT.

Wow
Dude be crazy!

No, but he did come from the blueline, which is why he got the charging penalty.

He glided from the top of the circle though, he wasn’t accelerating but he was carrying a truckload of momentum. I think the real danger in this play is that there was a goalie, forechecker and a referee between frattin and the annihilated player. He just had no idea he was coming until Frattin popped out from behind the ref, no time to square himself for the hit. Not that Matt let up or anything. It’s unfortunate, I hope he recovers fully.
I just worry he has personal issues that won’t allow him to fully function as a professional. University is pretty good at insulating people, but once they get out into the world, it can be a different story.
The hit was nowhere near as bad as Ovie (because it was not from behind), or Cormier (because it was actually a body check, not a flying elbow/bounty hunter situation), or Downie (because it was actually a hockey play, not sitting on someone’s knee). I love the enthusiasm. Hopefully he can control it and focus it.

Pretty sure Hollweg never scored 9 goals in 10 games… from Timbits hockey up…

Uhm...
What’s the problem there, with the exception that it was a charging? When do we start handing out suspensions for charging (and one that is not from behind)?
It was a solid hard hit and even though it appears that Frattin came a ways out to deliver the hit, what was the other player doing not seeing him come? I’ll tell you, suckering us all into thinking it was a dirty hit.

In the NCAA they actually attempt to protect the safety of the player’s heads, you see.

What a crazy concept.
Seems the KHL hasn’t figured that out yet either.

He knocked the other kid out cold
This is how the NHL SHOULD be handling hits like this. Take off the blue and white goggles for a second and realize just how dangerous that play was. He completely flattened the other guy, charging in with a full head of steam.
Yes, he finished his check and that’s what we all want, but as a human being, taking a 20 foot running start before pasting your shoulder into a guys face (which he did do, as he left his feet…) shouldn’t be your first instinct on a play like that.
I have nothing interesting to say.

It’s true. He didn’t even go for the puck. If he went for the puck and happened to flatten the guy at the same time, that’s all good. But turning on the wheels and leaving your feet…not cool. If he can dial it down a few notches, it’ll be all good.
by theothervatican on Mar 16, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Seemed like Frattin was actually closer to the puck then the defender but deliberately chose not to play the puck and destroy the player instead. Reckless.

He didn’t leave his feet until after the hit, but yeah shoulder to the head and massive interference.
Columbus: It's amazing how fast the world can go from bad to total shit storm.
Or the Leafs season: either one works
I question his decision-making skills

Sure, he took a run from the blue line, but the blue lines’ are a lot closer now than back in the day.

compare this hit
to Kostopolus’ hit on MVR last season.
Eerily similar circumstances if you ask me.

except for the one being from behind and this one not
still not the cleanest of hits though

Kostopolus’ hit was way worse. That was one of the most vicious things I’d ever seen and the NHL got the suspension completely wrong. Destroyed Van Ryn career.

no kidding, the NHL is a joke when it comes to handling dicipline.

we have no idea how the kid on the receiving end of this is. he didn’t play again that night, that’s for sure.
not saying the MVR/Kostopolus hit wasn’t bad, it most definitely was, that said, I don’t think “eye for an eye” or some sort of sliding scale to calculate the time suspended to the severity of injury is the appropriate way to legislate these types of dangerous plays, regardless of the league.
I get that Frattin is a Leaf prospect and some folks are enthralled with his ratio of piss and vinegar to skill. Doesn’t change the fact that it was a nasty hit, and if the kid that was KO’d was the Leaf prospect, I guarantee most folks here would be singing a different tune.
I have nothing interesting to say.

He wasn’t even going full bore. He did not lower his shoulder. You can only protect a player so far as they protect themselves. It was a harsh outcome but that’s hockey. People get hurt. Do you think new jersey is crying over Tomas kaberle? It’s the game and it happens.

The goalie bears some responsiblity as well. He has to stop the puck behind the goal there for the safety of his defenceman, but he let it get past him, and as soon as it did, the danger to the defenceman was obvious.
