Leafs Confessional
Hello all,
Wonderful PPP community.
I stand (sit) before you today (whenever you read this) because I have something to say (write). It is a horrible truth that I must face despite the shame I feel. A man cannot change his history, only his future; this simple truth provides me the strength I need to go through with this confession.
I was once an avid fan of the Ottawa Senators.
(Woman faints, cars squeel, record skips.. DUN DUN DUNNNNN)
I was reminded of my tainted past tonight. When Francois Beauchemin was taken out of the play, a la Claude Lemiuex on Kris Draper, by the evil swedish captain (Good swedish captain currently playing poker online in Stockholm) I had a flashback.
The year was 2002, the Leafs and Sens faced off for what felt like the 5th year in a row ('twas but the 3rd). The series was a battle locked at two games a piece, in game five with less than five minutes to go and the game tied at 2's Daniel Alfredsson delivered a filthy hit from behind on Darcy Tucker. The hit simultaneously put Tucker out of the series and separated the (injured) man from the puck, allowing Alfredsson to pot what would end up being the GWG with 2:01 remaining in the third period. At the time it appeared all was lost for the boys in Blue and White. Tucker was added to a sick ward that already included: Mats Sundin, Dmitri Yushkevich, Michael Renberg, Jyrki Lumme and Karel Pilar. As fate would have it the Leafs overcame the odds and won the series in seven on the backs of youngster Alyn McCauley and Curtis Joseph's omnipotent goaltending (warning: Cujo video may provoke manly tears).
[Any younger/newer Leafs fans who don't remember playoff hockey, the Tucker clip is in Toronto and that's what playoffs look like.]
I was avidly watching that series (as I had the previous two) and had continually fought the urge to fist pump (not like this, like this) when the Leafs scored or CuJo (my favourite goaltender from his time in Edmonton) made another of his acrobatic robberies. My world was changing and I didn't understand what was happening to me, Gary Roberts had become my favorite player more than a year earlier but I had maintained my official Ottawa allegiance. When Tucker got hit, in that split second when I felt my veins fill with hatred and anger for the captain of what I naively stilled called "my team", I knew that I was a Leafs fan. I fully embraced the team that God wanted me to love, and it was good.
It has been eight years since that fateful hit. I was fourteen years old in 2002, and I choose to blame the ignorance of youth with my foolhardy days of *SNES fandom. My supporting Ottawa stems from the fact that the only games I had been able to see live in my young life had been Sens games (visiting Grandparents in Ottawa was awesome when we got to see the Sens play, and inevitably lose to: Dominek Hasek and the Sabres or, on one occasion, the Big E and his Flyers). Just to be clear, I'm from the GTA and always supported the Leafs over other teams. It was only when it came to the Battle of Ontario that I was off the riteous path. We all make mistakes, my days of Sens fandom will be known as the Toskala years of my life.
Thank you for taking the time. Hopefully you can still look me in the eye (avatar) and respect me as a human being (faceless internet person). This has been hard on my soul, I think I'll go bask in some more . Leafs . highlights . like . these

I was somewhat indifferent of the Senators when they first joined the league…I never figured they’d be big threats at first. Then when they improved, I didn’t exactly hate them, I was alright with them advancing a round back in their early playoff days. Although living near Ottawa meant less Leafs games were coming in on TV which irked me a little.
Then I moved to Ottawa, and Ottawa played Toronto in the playoffs for the first time. And suddenly I saw a pretty crazy amount of hate for Toronto all of a sudden, which I didn’t really understand at the time. All it did was make me feel better when Toronto advanced and Ottawa was toast. But most other times I didn’t care…I was even okay with Ottawa advancing past Philadelphia to take the Leafs on again in 2002.
Then…Alfredsson hit Tucker from behind and everything changed. *NSNES fans defend that hit to this day. It’s like they see different things when we look at the same picture or something. But I could never want Ottawa to win again. Frankly when Rod Bryden’s bankruptcy crisis came about, I hoped the Senators would move out :)
It’s not like their fans are loyal or anything. The concept of loyalty is lost on them. After all, they all turned on an old team anyway. Either that or they are just fans because Ottawa has a team, and can’t understand why Leafs fans can’t just drop everything and cheer for their team…

our wendel who arn’t in heaven
hallowed be thy fist
thy kingdom come
thy will be done
in toronto as it is in pittsburgh
give us this day our daily blood
and forgive us our bad passes
as we destroy those who trespass against us
and lead us not into east’s basement
but deliver us some evil
Amen
Hail Luke
full of truculence
the force is with thee
blessed art thou amongst prospects
and blessed is the fruit of thy own stick
for thou hast borne the savior of our souls
Hope!!!1

If I find myself in hell when I die, I’m going to look at this moment as my turning point. Just awesome.

If there ever was an appropriate incident to cause a “road to Damascus” moment, the hit on Tucker was it. And to think that turd was recently quoted in the Calgary papers complaining about blindside hits. I guess they’re OK if it’s him pasting a defenseless Leaf from behind with a potentially crippling hit. He, Neil and Ruuttu are the ones that are really easy the hate. The rest of the team, and the franchise, is more pathetic than anything else.
This is one of those “we’ll never speak of it again” moments like the time I walked in on PPP defiling a jar of mayonnaise.

That explains why everyone looks at me wide-eyed waiting for me to take a bite out of the sandwich and then laughs hysterically when I do.

My first team, and if I’m flipping through cards from 1980-83, they still are:

I cheered for Anaheim when they were playing against Ottawa. Some people were like “You gotta cheer for the Canadian team!” and I was like “I am!”
The most Canadian players in the League that year

When I first started watching hockey
I actually liked the Canucks (i was 13)
That lasted all of 2 years – 91-92 (incidentally I believe this was the same year the S*NS joined the league) I shifted into Leaf mode and never looked back.

Luckily I was started down the right path early. My dad, grandma, and grandpa are (were, for my grandparents) all Leafs fans so my earliest hockey memories are watching HNIC on Saturdays with my dad, in my Leafs jammies, cheering on Potvin and Clark and Gilmour and Sundin. I can remember my grandma, 85 years old, jumping up off the couch and yelling “PUNCH HIM DOMI! PUNCH HIM AGAIN!” She got all 75 lbs of her weight into cheering whenever he fought. All she watched was Wheel of Fortune, Price is Right, Jeopardy, and Leafs games. My grandpa died when I was about 7 so I don’t really have any Leafs-related memories with him. Needless to say, I had excellent role models early. Someday I’m gonna be that 100 lb old man, jumping up out of his chair in the nursing home and cheering for the Leafs.
