Really don’t like that hit on Seabrook. I hope there’s a suspension. I don’t really see a difference between that hit and blatantly swinging your stick at a guy.

by general borschevsky on Mar 18, 2010 10:10 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, it was nasty. He never has possession of the puck; Wiz leaves his feet; and it’s all forearms to the face. You can see that Seabrook is knocked out for a second but thankfully came too. Imagine if he’d have suffered a concussion? Chicago would be screwed on the blue line for the playoffs.

I've always wanted to be a PPP Princess. You see kids, you can be anything you want to be; so long as Jay Leno doesn't also want to be that.

by SkinnyFish on Mar 18, 2010 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

it was definitely charging

but I have a hard time swallowing the whole “he jumped” argument..

Hope Seabrook is okay, because it was really ugly. Wondering if Wisniewski’s intent was more to try and get in Seabrook’s face and start a fight? It would explain why it’s mostly forearms and gloves that make contact. Not an excuse, just trying to figure it out.

Also, I posted it on MLHS, but that his is essentially what the league would look like if the players policed themselves. I know everyone hates Corey Perry, but Seabrook’s hit on him was a little questionable. Seems to me Seabrook had the time and space to ease up, as Perry had turned and gotten low before Seabrook appeared to be “locked in.”

All that said, I do think the refs got the call wrong. If anything, they could have given Wisniewski a game misconduct for unsportsmanlike behavior. That would then put the ball in the league’s court to review the play, wouldn’t it? I know they’re not in the habit of reviewing 2 minute minors for supplementary discipline.

Just my 2¢. Easy to say all this with the benefit of replay and hindsight, harder to put into action on the ice.

I have nothing interesting to say.

by blurr1974 on Mar 18, 2010 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Honestly, I thought the game-losing non-call on the Sopel shove was a more glaring missed call. Just because the puck is in the air doesn’t mean interference rules stop mattering…

by Bower Power on Mar 18, 2010 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I still can’t believe it got 8-games whereas Cooke got nothing. At least Wize’s was a hockey hit (though high and interference); Cooke’s was a dirty blindside elbow from behind.

Also

Jamal Mayers is pretty classy. Looked like he realized Wilson was in trouble and held him up. Could’ve broken his leg the way he was falling there.

by general borschevsky on Mar 18, 2010 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

indeed

but Wilson sucks at fighting

for a counter point, watch chris neil fight luke schenn, get knocked down, gets let up by schenn, knock schenn to his knees and continue to feed him punches

by JaredFromLondon on Mar 18, 2010 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Or most recently, get knocked down by XLB and pull XLB (after his helmet’s come off) behind the knees for a take down, causing him to his the back of his head on the ice. Take downs like that should be an extra penalty.

agreed, the judo shit pisses me off.

grappling of any kind

should be a penalty. if they’re gonna fight, then fight. enough with the man-on-man hugging action.

maybe my memories of the halcyon 80s and early 90s are rose colored, but I don’t remember guys posturing and jockeying for position before. It was more this:

and less of this

I have nothing interesting to say.

Leafs PP and PK Trends Through 70 Games

A post at my blog from yesterday: Leafs PP and PK Trends Through 70 Games.
Have a look at the line charts and check out the progression/regression of the Leafs PP & PK percentages throughout the season.

by Slava Duris #24 on Mar 18, 2010 11:39 AM EDT reply actions

Do you have a breakdown of the PK in 10 game chunks like you do for the PP?

I've always wanted to be a PPP Princess. You see kids, you can be anything you want to be; so long as Jay Leno doesn't also want to be that.

by SkinnyFish on Mar 18, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I meant to put that in there too. It’s now included in the post.

by Slava Duris #24 on Mar 18, 2010 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Toskala 2-0 in Calgary

in 3 games, sporting a .944 and 1.52.

You know what? $%^& it, I don’t even care. The fact that he hasn’t been atrocious for his new team means one of two things (possibly both)

1 – He’s a dick for being terrible here but apparently possessing the capability to not be terrible
2 – he will be terrible again soon.

Best. Trade. Ever.

putting vezina and toskala anywhere close together will cause mutual annihilation of both – as they are of opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to goaltending.

by Say *plan the parade one more time*... on Mar 18, 2010 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Small sample size

You could probably find plenty of one, two, or even three game stretches where Toskala played decent for us.

A very good example of what can happen over a small number of games: Raycroft, in his first four games as a Maple Leaf, had a 1.45 GAA, a .953 save percentage, and a shutout.

by Slava Duris #24 on Mar 18, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Indeed, I believe Toskala got at least one shutout for us this year, so your point is bang on.

by stucky on Mar 18, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

You probably could

pick a specific run of 2 games with the Leafs that reflects statistics similar to his two games with the Flames.

Giguere’s first two games with the Leafs: 1.000 sv% and 0.00 GAA.

Now what??
