Maple Leafs 2 v. Devils 1: Giggy Saves...
And John Mitchell dekes you out of your jock. What a move by Phil Kessel, I was already lamenting the miss when I realised he had not shot, and a new move from Nikolai Kulemin! The game wasn't the greatest, decent effort, and a late penalty looked set to derail things until Jean-Sebastien Giguere made one of the saves of the year. Somehow, the Leafs went 3-for-3 in the shootout which I am pretty sure has never happened before. Can we play Yann Danis every shootout?
Anyway, instant reaction folks and one night of complimenting John Mitchell instead of cursing his mother for not leaping tummy first down the stairs.

A few quick observations:
-
The Leafs were a terrible 39% in face-off circle. Face-offs lead to puck possession which leads to shots which lead to goals so they are vitally important. Only Tyler Bozak showed any skill last night and the encouraging thing is that he has done it consistently this year.
-
Mikhail Grabovski and Christian Hanson were terrible which is par for the course. They went 1-6 and 2-6 respectively.
-
Garnett Exelby played only 8:18 last night with all of it coming at even-strength.
-
Nikolai Kulemin led the team with 6 hits while Viktor Stalberg picked up 5. Those hits are coming as a result of some excellent forechecking that has seen both use their speed to harass the opposition.
-
The New Jersey Devils ran out Colin White and Mike Mottau for 10 defensive zone face-offs compared to one offensive zone face-offs. I think you can tell who makes up their shutdown pair.
-
On the flip side, Andy Greene and Paul Martin were leaned on for the offensive zone face-offs.
-
The Leafs' top line looks like it was run out as much as they could be for offensive zone face-offs.
-
Former Maple Leaf Martin Skoula was -11

Ok well
not so good recently… 0-4-1 in their last 5 games that were the second half of a back to back.

So they were 0-4 before tonight. Meaning they did better than usual in back to back and we still beat them.

I kind of want them to get far enough to whoop Pittsburgh’s ass.

Since the Olympic break, the Leafs have beaten:
Ottawa (flu, no Alfredsson, in a tail spin)
Boston (no Savard, no Chara)
Tampa Bay (Mike Smith sh*t the bed)
Edmonton (worst team in the league)
Ottawa (still in a horrific tail spin)
New Jersey (back to back, started a back-up)
I’d say it has just as much to do with weakness of schedule as it does with any type of roster transformation.

Well this is very true

Oh, I agree. I hope the Leafs run the table the rest of the way and Boston’s pick drops lower and lower. Just don’t see them hauling in the points once the competition gets tougher.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
One thing that we need to keep in mind is that 7 of our last 11 are at home, where we have been much better than on the road, so its not crazy to think we might make up a few points.

All those teams are in a playoff hunt except edmonton I don’t think anyone was letting up on us. Maybe we wouldn’t have won a couple of those if the other teams were fully healthy but before the deadline I think we would have lost the games regardless of how depleeted they might have been.
The NJ game last night we lose 100% if it was played in december.
You can mention the ease of schedule but if you watch the games they’re playing like a different team (they are a different team)

True, but the bottom line is you’ve got to win. A team still has to win when things don’t go their way and they have to win the games they should win. They might have an easy schedule right now but it’s good to see the Leafs take advantage of it for once. Also, I’d like to see the kids get used to winning. Might give them some hunger and confidence.

I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m really happy the team is winning. I think the Leafs recent point surge has far more to do with who they’re playing than with how they’re playing.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
Let's all acknowledge
that it’s a bit of both.
The more worrisome thing is that they’re BARELY beating a lot of soft competition. This is like the 3rd or 4th OT game in the past 7. The best part to me is they’re finally winning those games rather than losing them.

I wouldn't call
9 games that we lost in OT barely losing for A LOT of the year. It’s a chunk of it sure, but every team ends up with 5 or 6 OT losses… the Leafs inability to pull them out had a lot to do with goaltending, team D, and an inability to score at key moments.

Its not just OT losses though, its all the ‘moral victories’ we had, where we played a great game but lost due to a mistake or bad goaltending etc. Sometime the puck just bounces one way and lately its been in our favour, whereas for just as many of the games (if not more) it was bouncing the other way.
Phaneuf Phever, an upgrade in skill and alliteration!
Sure the Leafs have had horrible luck, but if the team had more talent, they would overcome that luck.

make their own luck.
The fact that the Leafs couldn’t buy one of those goals earlier this year indicates they just weren’t a very good team.
One or two bounces either way? sure… 10 of them… in every OT game? That’s not bad luck… that’s a crappy team.

So the last 6 games aren’t due to the ‘luck’ of the other teams having injuries, playing backup goalies etc, but to our skill?
Phaneuf Phever, an upgrade in skill and alliteration!
That'd be part of it yes
especially since all those back to back games, injuries, and illnesses have kept other teams from having their best players on the ice in crunch time.
Let’s face it… Yann Danis isn’t Martin Brodeur… Denis Wideman playing 30 minutes a night is not the same as having Zdeno Chara out there… and the Sens aren’t the same without Mike Fisher or Daniel Alfredsson…
The Leafs haven’t had any huge gaps in their line up recently.

Who wants to go to the Olive Garden?
by JaredFromLondon on Mar 18, 2010 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Grabovski, Kessel, and Kulemin
were all expected to make strides forward this year… it’s taken 3/4’s of it for us to finally see much of that.
As for Bozak, Stalberg, and Caputi… we sort of expected 2/3rds of that trio to produce at some point, and Caputi is the result of one of the many expected trades.
I’m not sure I am as over the moon as I would be if we were in the playoffs at this point.
The current development is roughly what we all projected… and in fact it’s a bit worse than we had hoped before this year began. I certainly don’t remember going into the season with our D, thinking about how we would have the worst PK and D in the league, and give up the most goals against of any team in the NHL.

Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
I think they need to teach him how to shoot a one timer
and work on his slap shot in the off season.
They also need to work on making Kulemin more of a shooter on the PP… he was the trigger man on the top PP for Magnitogorsk in Russia before he came over here, and he did a very good job of it.
they could also use Stalberg in that role more.

This is all true
As is the fact that all but two of the wins have come after regulation.
But the fact remains that our pre-deadline team (but for that spurt in November) would not have won these games even with these advantages.
And no one was making excuses for our losses when we were missing Kessel, Gunnarsson, Komisarek, Gustavsson, Grabovski, and even Bozak (seems like H1N1 set him back a good month or two).
I also think we did have a tougher early schedule, if only because the remainder looks so juicy. 7 of 11 at home, and 8 of 11 against teams in the bottom half of the league as a whole. Philly, Buffalo and Pittsburgh are the only games left against teams in the top half (or with a positive goal differential, if you prefer).
Finally, tonight WAS a quality win. I’m not saying Denis is better than Brodeur but he does have a better sv% this year and posted a .962 tonight. We didn’t win because of Denis. The back-to-back thing is a lame excuse. We certainly didn’t accept it when we lost to the Isles. And the Devils have been very hot, are as healthy as they’ve been all year, are fighting for a playoff spot, and have added Kovie.
Bottom line—we’ve been lucky the last 9 games but to suggest that most of that is attributable to crappy opposition is overstating it quite a bit.

Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
I thought I was conceding (in part) your point that we’ve been lucky schedule-wise. I also think we’ve had some puck luck that we didn’t get earlier in the year. However, I think we’ve clearly been a better team than earlier in the year too.

The Devils have lost
5 games that were follow ups to back to backs in a row… that’s significant.
As for Danis… it’s more an issue of his shoot out prowess.
Also… the leafs sched is easy… but it’s not just easy because of the teams we’re playing… note the loss to the Isles?

by Steve Burtch on Mar 18, 2010 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s sample size, not significant. As you pointed out, the Devils have been very good overall. It can’t all be Olympic fatigue.
I don’t take anything out of one game, whether it’s this win or the loss to the Isles—less than 24 hr turnaround and apparently the worst flight many players have ever been on, not that it’s an excuse.
But the trend is undoubtedly positive. We may still wind up in 29th but I think most of us feared we’d be battling Edmonton for 30th.
What’s up with Florida, Atlanta and Carolina all winning too, by the way? Over some decent opposition too. So hard to gain ground.

I think Primeau has a high chance of remaining consistent, and I think Mitchell has a high chance of becoming really bad. It’s a gut feeling, but that’s why I’d pick Primeau over Manbaby.
I would keep Mitchell because of the huge youth advantage.

That’s true. He could be the next Boyes or Sullivan, too. He’s a huge question mark with a potentially great upside.
I don’t see him being anything but a 4th liner but he’s got better penalty killing numbers than Primeau, he’s younger, he’s cheaper, and he has the mitigating factor of a fairly significant injury. He could improve, Primeau will only get worse. It’s a no-brainer to me to keep Mitchell over Primeau.

The idea that Mitchell has a huge amount of upside is a bit misleading. He has been passed on the top 6 depth chart by at least 5 players who are younger than he is. I don’t see him improving beyond them in the short term, let alone the final product in 4 years.

Someone has to play cheaply on the fourth line.

But Mitchell isn’t the only option available. If he’s going to be 4th line material, there are plenty of players around to replace that kind of player. I guess it comes down to if the Leafs brass feel Mitchell has more upside than a glorified checker. If not, or if the Leafs don’t want to wait around, Mitchell seems easily replaceable.

Who?
I would posit that there are not many players that make that little, will continue to make that little, and have shown any of the potential that Mitchell has.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.

If the Leafs estimate Mitchell will only amount to 4th line, then I would assume the Leafs can find comparable players at comparable pay, yes.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
That’s the point. I don’t think that that is Mitchell’s ceiling and I don’t think the Leafs think so either.
Pension Plan Puppets: A Toronto Maple Leafs blog and a group therapy session.
Like reading thoughts confined to 140 characters? I'm on Twitter too.
But Mitchell’s inconsistency shows he may never reach that ceiling. With the amount of NCAA, AHL, and European free agents that are available, I don’t think it’s impossible to find a player that is at Mitchell’s level if the Leafs don’t want to wait. I’m not definitively stating that the Leafs are going to divorce themselves from John Mitchell, but it’s also prudent for the Leafs to investigate. And I think the Leafs already are hashing out who is going to be on the Leafs next season. If Player X comes at a comparable price to Mitchell, whether that be a free agent or a player already in the system, then the Leafs ultimately decide who to keep.

The idea that
the Leafs options amount to Primeau or Mitchell is a bit strange.
They can sign ANY free agent to play that role that they want. They aren’t locked in to one of those two.
Why not go for a cheap player from Europe, or another NCAA free agent… or hell just a DIFFERENT veteran from around the NHL for cheap.
