Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay
Well, with Chemmy and Skinnyfish heading to Toronto today, you guys are stuck with me for the next few days. My posting the FTB for three consecutive days comes at an interesting time - just as Margaret Wente of the Globe and Mail touched off a storm about bloggers "all" being male. We're at about 2/5s female content here at PPP alone, let alone the regular Leaf bloggers like Loser Domi, Wrap around Curl etc. who are also female. I think Wente should've done a little more research before declaring that bloggers were solely male. But then, that's just about par for the course for her.
Meanwhile, the Leafs eked out a SO win with a sick Phil Kessel deke that had me convinced he'd run out of ice right before he scored. Good times.

Also, if you want to follow Wente on twitter she’s at http://twitter.com/pwente. So far it’s the literary equivalent of somebody trying to figure out where the CD Drive is on an iPod. I predict high comedy, before being cast off to lie fallow in about, oh, I’ll say two months.

Just go North on the Yonge Line
Get off at Yonge and Eglinton and go upstairs and head East…
which would be in the direction of the TD Bank and the 7-Eleven.
Just walk about 4 blocks until you hit Mt. Pleasant, and the Granite is on the South East corner, a bit south on Mt. Pleasant.

Will be very interesting how this plays out. He’s improved throughout his career, is only 25, plays the PK and PP (I think he leads the ‘Nucks in TOI) and has almost a ppg this year. On the other hand his ES production hasn’t been great this year, his PP time I suspect was boosted by the Sedin injury, and it’s a contract year. If he continues to be their 3rd best forward it’s not a bad contract, particularly given the massive hometown discount the Sedins gave.
He’s making a bit less than Perry/Getzlaf, who are of comparable age.
He’s also of course making less than Kessel. Kessel obviously has more upside, but Kesler’s older (which usually means more money), is better defensively and is actually producing at a higher rate this year.
by The '67 Sound on Mar 19, 2010 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I also think that Kesler should be captain of the Canucks, not Luongo. It’s really hard to argue with the contract, aside from it’s not much of a discount, and the Canucks are risking some major cap problems in the future.

I'd really like them to not tinker too much
with this Leafs team going forward.
We have a lot of young talent coming through the system… when we start dealing it away, we begin to run the risk of giving up on players that are still developing…
Buy low, sell high… not the reverse.
i’d rather we develop players and then trade them when they’re near their peak.

Leaf priorities
re-sign Kulemin and Gustavsson for under $6 million… then figure out who to bring in to play the remaining bottom 5 forward spots. If you re-sign Hanson, Mitchell, Lundmark, and Wallin, or comparables for roughly what they’re making now, you still have $3 million or so for a free agent…

Actually, the bonuses screw us next year because they count against the cap absent a new CBA. Using the assumptions you set out, our roster (below) shows us a million over the current cap, with 2 guys to sign for a standard 23 man roster. Either Finger’s going down (which would just get us under the cap to sign a couple other low salary guys) and/or a defenseman has to be traded.
I’m hoping we can get Kule and Monster for more like $5MM. I don’t think Monster has earned significant money.

i'd be surprised
if Kulie and Gus get close to $6M combined, but you’ve been right before so I’ll defer to your guts.
I’ve liked Kulie’s game for a while now, and am pleased to see it bearing fruit. But his boxcar stats are nothing to write home about just yet.
He’s 23, and will probably finish with 40 points this year. On paper, that’s Matt Stajan 3 years ago (although happily i see his ceiling much higher.)
Depending on term, i’d be amazed if he got more than $2.5 a year.
A good PK is Club Truculence's cover charge
that is true
I forgot about the KHL.
WIth all these ridiculous 10+ year deals going around for elite level guys, i would love to see one thrown at a player who’s clearly not that top level but still provides an excellent bet to be a solid dependable player for years to come.
7 years and $20 million for Kulie? Who’s with me!
On second thought, i don’t think the leafs OR he would go for that :)
A good PK is Club Truculence's cover charge
I dunno. I don’t like blowing cap space because another league is irresponsible with their money. We don’t overpay Kulie to cover the sins of the KHL. If he is lured away, it’ll be on him when he’s unemployed/not payed in 3 years. No reason for us to screw the pooch.

If that is true (and it may not be) then he’s not going anywhere anytime soon… even if the money is better in Russia… it’s not THAT much better.
There’s a reason players like the social safety net over here, and having children raised in Canada is probably preferable to raising them in Russia. Plus when you add in the fact that there’s a large Russian Ex-Pat community in Toronto, and it’s not as big a deal as you might think.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.

yeah…I agree. Let’s try to keep this bunch together, and let them “grow up” together.

Diagnosing the season
You can break this season down into some pretty clear chunks: (1) the abysmal start; (2) stumbling along; (3) the hot streak; (4) the long, depressing middle; (5) post-Phaneuf/Giggy; (6) post-deadline. Here’s how the season breaks down in those chunks:
Opp. Sv% Tor. Sv% Pts. % Record
0.941 0.847 0.063 0-7-1
0.915 0.898 0.455 3-4-4
0.899 0.899 0.714 9-3-2
0.931 0.879 0.304 5-14-4
0.922 0.91 0.333 2-4-0
0.915 0.915 0.722 6-2-1
0.920 0.890 0.437 25-34-12
In the chunks where the Leafs goalies achieved SV%s equivalent to their opposition, they are 15-5-3. Even if you look just at chunks where they got goaltending better than .880—which is a REALLY low bar—they were 20-13-7. 5-25-5 during the long stretches when they got sub-AHL calibre goaltending.
Obviously our own shooting percentage bounced around too, but the bigger factor seems to be our goalies. Even if we assume our sniping gets no better and we keep making the opposing goalie look like Bryzgalov (sv% .922), if we can just get a sv% over .900 I like our chances given the huge advantage in shots Toronto enjoys in just about all situations—behindthenethockey.com has shown the Leafs are among league leaders in shot differentials in all situations, not just while trailing.
I understand the play of our skaters may play some role in our own sv% but .905-910 seems realistic, and I think that would get us near the playoffs even if nothing else improves.
thank you
for reaffirming using magical numbers and stats what my eyes and instincts have been telling me all year.
The Leafs take a lot of shots and are pretty good at puck possession. But it’s just asking too much to get them to make up for 2 bad goals (on top of the good legit ones) every night.
All i want to see happen this offseason is to clear up the logjam on D. We have way too much money back there, and Gunnarson is clearly ready for regular duty for cheap money. Komi/Beauch/Schenn/Phaneuf and Gunnar are a perfectly fine top five. I want kabby and/or Finger’s nearly $8M moved out so our tinder is dry for when we’re ready to start adding pieces to a solid core. At the deadline next year at the absolute earliest, but most likely the offseason after that.
A good PK is Club Truculence's cover charge
Agree re. D
As for the stats, I knew goaltending played a major role in our results this year but I was a little surprised at how stark it was.

Dmitri Yushkevich was so tough, he once blocked a Chuck Norris kick with his teeth and finished the shift.

Did you see Vokunn from last night too?

Nazem Kadri
with 1G (OT winner), 1A, +1, 6 PIM in the first playoff game. Nice.
