Monday's Back

This is what my husband does to our dog when she's not feeling well.

Well it's back to the routine of everyday life for everyone today.  For some, that'll be really sucky, as it seems everyone who managed to make it to Toronto for the big meetup was very reluctant to leave (note: more pictures are required.  I'm sure you're all sufficiently recuperated from your hangovers to humour me today).  Me, I'm not so sure.  Keiko was not feeling well this weekend, and I was very worried.  She slept a lot more than usual, and was hardly playing, which meant we took her to the vet on Sunday afternoon.  He said she's fine, but she is on some antibiotics for a rash on her tummy, and that they are probably making her feel poor.  Yesterday she was doing better at least, a little more playful, and much less sleeping, so I feel good going in to work today.  Well, aside from the fact that I have to go in to work.  But we can't have everything, can we?

Yeah, their GF/GA suggests an 87 point team, not a 97 point team. Going 17-5 in SO/OT will do that for you (Leafs 6-12 even after 5 SO/OT wins in a row).

Bryzgalov is also having a career-best year. Not way off, but a .921 vs. his career average of .914 means about 13 goals over the year, which converts to about two extra wins I think.

Good for them, they’re playing to their strengths. But I would not bet on them repeating it next year. Sorry Travis.

by The '67 Sound on Mar 22, 2010 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah they’ll have to improve personnel to keep it up next year. I do think Bryzgalov’s stats are helped by Tippet’s defensive system, though.

Who wants to go to the Olive Garden?

by JaredFromLondon on Mar 22, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

As much as I love him and respect his long service, I think we need to face the reality that one could make an argument Kaberle is no longer underpaid. If he were paid $5.5MM we might have to chip in picks to convince someone to take him for a full year.

With 20/20 hindsight, the move last offseason probably should have been to trade Kabs, not Kubina (whose contract expires this year anyway). Kaberle probably could yielded a #1 + last year, and starting next year our D would consist of Phaneuf (no reason that trade couldn’t have happened again), Beauch, Schenn, Komi, Gunnar and some combination of Aulie/Mikus/Oreskovic/cheap UFA X. With Finger on the Marlies.

by The '67 Sound on Mar 22, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know if the Phaneuf deal is as much of a slam dunk as you’d think.

If Kaberle’s gone, White would have started the year as the de facto puck-moving defenceman. He would have inherited some (probably not all) of Tomas’ PP minutes, and that probably would have caused a slight uptick in his offensive numbers.

With Komi, Beauch and Schenn already in place, Kubina expiring and Gunnarsson developing, it might have made more sense to keep White.

Maybe

All crazy hypothetical anyway. But I do think we’ve missed our “sell high” window for Kaberle.

by The '67 Sound on Mar 22, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

That was Carter and a 1st. And yes, that’s way the hell gone now. Although that is as much a function of the shift in the market as it is a decline in Kaberle’s value. 1st rounders are insanely valuable now. You need to be getting a true stud back.

Like say, a 22 year old 30+ goal scorer.

by clrkaitken on Mar 22, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't buy it.

Crazy what a 12 game drought will do to the value of a guy who formerly lead defensemen in points, and is now stuck in the oh-so-low 7th place (boasting fewer points on the power play than everyone in front of him (save Enstrom)). And it’s madness that his game might shake when the guy is getting more questions about his future than his game. And when he’s given an entire new team to work with, asked to adjust mid season.

Second rounder? I could understand a late first, or a second and a strong prospect, but even with 1 point in the last 12, he’s holding more points than Gonchar, with the supporting cast of…uh…the Leafs.

Ditching the 1st rounder expectations, in my opinion, is a little alzheimer-esque. Kabby may never fit in with “the new leafs,” but even in this season he’s shown to be a talented player, and would be a great lock for a lot of other teams. I’d rather have this drought all in one block, than lowered point production over the whole of the season.

by Bower Power on Mar 22, 2010 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, and as mentioned above, making less than most of the guys in front of him.

Is this team better with Kaberle in the line-up? I don’t think so. He’s already lost minutes to Phaneuf and Gunnarsson this year. He’s currently playing the 4th most minutes amongst the D, surely dropping to 5th next season when Komisarek returns. If you’re talking about a player who can’t be replaced in this line-up, it’s certainly not Kaberle.

by birky on Mar 22, 2010 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Is Burke going to pay 4.5 million for a 3rd pairing defenseman, especially when there are pressing needs to get better players into the top 6 of the line-up?

by birky on Mar 22, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

A closer look shows us that Kaberle scored 17 of his 47 points (more than 1/3rd) in October, including 12 on the powerplay. Since November 1, he has 30 points over 5 months, and only 13 points on the powerplay.

Going back to his last multi-point game, which was January 5th, he has 10 points in 29 games. This isn’t just a post-olympic slump. He was well into the slump before he even left for the olympics. He’s also been a -9 during that stretch.

by birky on Mar 22, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Kaberel was a minus 6 through the first 5 games back after the Olympic break. So if we excuse those five games, his plus/minus from Jan 5th is minus 3. Yet Kaberle was a plus 2 for the entire month of December, so you could say then that his plus/minus – with the exception of the 5 consecutive games immediately following the Olympics – is only a minus 1 since December 1st.

by general borschevsky on Mar 22, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s certainly not worthless, but it’s hard to argue he’s worth more than a 2nd round pick and a decent prospect.

An even closer look

Games 1-10: 1G, 10A, -7
Games 11-20: 1G, 10A, +3
Games 21-30: 0G, 7A, -3
Games 31-40: 1G, 5A, +1
Games 41-50: 2G, 4A, -3
Games 51-60: 1G, 4A, even
Games 61-70: 0G, 1A, -7
Games 71-72: 0G, 0A, even

Basically if you disregard his great start and take his play from games 21 on out to be his normal pace for a season; he looks like an 8G, 35A, -10 defenseman.

And if you disregard 20 games of the regular season for every defenseman? Their best 20 game streak, at that?

“If you disregard” just seems a little silly. I understand that they’re not dependable points, and that you can’t plan on poni being some 60 point defenseman, but those were points he still put on the board. 20 games is a long hot streak.

by Bower Power on Mar 22, 2010 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Also of note, in the first 20 games he had a 5 point game in a 6-3 win at Anaheim, and a 4 point game in a 4-5 OTL to Montreal.

I could understand taking points out of a score run-up (6-3), but again, ignoring a 4 point night in a tight game doesn’t make sense.

by Bower Power on Mar 22, 2010 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

And, for the record, I’m not saying he hasn’t been a streaky scorer this season, or that this isn’t a front-end loaded season for him. Just that, well, those points count, too, and with rarely any score run-up games on this team (contrary to, say, the Caps), I think it’s fair to say that he’s still a skilled offensive defenseman, and that’s worth something.

by Bower Power on Mar 22, 2010 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

In that 5 point game, all 5 points were on the power play. Two of the points in the 4 point game were on the PP.

Sorry, then, maybe I missed something. Are we looking at just kabby’s even strength point production, or his all around? Also, that only makes me sad; remember when we had a power play?

Also, thread over for me. I found out there’s a place around here that has all you can eat wings for $9 from 5 to 11pm on monday.

So. Excited.

by Bower Power on Mar 22, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

if you’re going to take away his best games, you should take away his worst games as well. if you do that and only look at his stats for games 21-50, those 30 ‘average’ games would put him on pace for 8 goals, 44 assists, 52 pts, -12.

and how many players stats wouldn’t look worse if you removed their best 20-game period? or their 2 best ‘fluke’ games? this is a silly exercise.

Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.

by daoust on Mar 22, 2010 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

The question isn’t “is this team better,” it’s “is any team better?” I’m not making an argument to keep him, I’m making an argument that his trade value is higher than some might credit him around here. I don’t think he fits in well with this team anymore; the kids are too fast, they pass the puck reasonably well between themselves (especially that top line), and, well, they’re not Matt Stajan, Jason Blake, or Poni. But it doesn’t mean he can’t generate points somewhere, and as long as that’s the case, he has trade value.

by Bower Power on Mar 22, 2010 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

i’m not saying he doesn’t have trade value, but you’re looking at a player who has regressed over the 2nd half of the season. You only get him guaranteed for one season at that 4.5 mill price tag, which doesn’t look as fantastic when you consider the numbers above

by birky on Mar 22, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’m glad you looked into the distribution of points, because I (stupidly) assumed it was fairly even. The October-dependence is interesting, if not scary, though it still makes him ~.5 ppg defenseman for over half the season at 4.5m.

I guess it just depends on whether or not we can “Sutter someone”, especially someone who believes they can make the October Kaberle the March Kaberle. Toss in a late round pick, and I irrationally hold that you could steal a mid-to-late round first.

by Bower Power on Mar 22, 2010 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Veteran D making $4-4.5MM

Hainsey, Hannan, Komi, Brewer, Kaberle, Liles, Streit, Regehr, Zidlicky, Meszaros.

For those who watch more of other teams than me: compared to this group, is Kaberle overpaid? Underpaid? Fairly paid? He’s obviously the top point producer of the bunch and plays more than all but Streit and Zidlicky (though he’d be near the bottom of the bunch based on his TOI post-Phaneuf).

I’ve excluded guys on RFA contracts like Keith because they obviously get paid below market.

Wow, looking at that list… yes, Kaberle is still a good deal. Hannan, Brewer, Komi, Regehr are all straight stay at home D. I’d take Kabby over Hainsty, Liles and Meszaros. Zidlicky and Streit are better than he is, IMHO, though.

I know it's a lot of money on the blue line, but...

Imagine our defence had such depth that the 4th and 5th defenceman could handle top-line minutes depending on the style of competition they face? Imagine not relying on the same 3 players to get the job done night after night but instead being able to rotate the pressure and responsibility based on who performs the best in any given situation? Imagine an injury to a key defender doesn’t mean praying to God that Wozneiwskis, Stralmans, Oreskovics can handle playing in the NHL?

by Bower Power on Mar 22, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a luxury any other team in the NHL has decided it is worth paying for in a salary cap world. We have no money to pay for any forwards when the time comes to compete (I know, next year it’s moot).

And Vancouver doesn’t pay any D over $3.75MM. We’ve got FOUR GUYS making more than their top paid D. Your model might make sense if you’re not paying any one (let alone 4) guys $4MM+. Sharing the load doesn’t make sense when you’re paying guys that much.

Atlanta is not a franchise I want to emulate.

Finger and one other must go. We can sign a veteran UFA for $1MM or less as a #7 D if we’re worried about depth.

by The '67 Sound on Mar 22, 2010 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Vancouver’s model is not one I’d like to follow. They seriously NEED one defenseman who is actually work $3.75MM. I’d rather have a higher priced defense core and a goalie who counts for less than $5MM on the cap.

If you haven’t read the story yet, do yourself a favour and check it out. Remarkable that the family of the girl who died has been able to live without being angry at Knutsen. The bit about Doug MacLean’s decision to prevent his players from attending the funeral would be genuinely amusing if there weren’t a real possibility that his incredibly poor decision may have contributed to ending Knutsen’s career as a result.

Well worth the read. Thanks for the linky, Karina! Rec’d for wonderfulness.

Whatever the reason, it’s brutal (you’re right though, the story does say that MacLean was hoping to “protect” his players from the media). I just don’t see how that’s wrapped up in them actually going to the funeral; if the players wanted to go – and I assume from the story that they did – no way should he have prevented them from doing so. If he wants to protect the players from the media, there are ways to arrange that too. But don’t prevent the guys from going entirely.

That’s just an obviously bad choice, in my view.

I felt confident in the mid years of the pat quinn era. I clearly remember 1989-1992 and how little hope I had. I remember the 10 game winning streak to start 1993 I wasn’t really sure how to react. The nick beverly/Mike Murphy eras I remember losing all hope again as Fletcher went bat nuts and started making weird trades. I remember hating Quinn at first cuz he gave away Jason Smith and Sullivan for nothing and I still had no hope. I got hope back for the mid years of Quinn and since then it’s been nothing but despair. But I really do honestly feel some serious positive energy from this team.

1. Kulemin is so good, you guys don’t even know (of course you do) but he is a beast and will get even better and will score 30’s each year just watch him.

2. Kessel is a talent that’s rare and he’s got balls (no pun intended) and grit and he might have moments of coastyness but he generally gets in there and tries.

3. The kids are all looking ok after that. Schenn is looking much more confident and he is a smart good kid he’ll be great.Bozak looks like a cocky dynamo. He could turn out to be a great dangler. Phaneuf is also rare.

4. Our D is stacked

Two ace talent youngans playing in the majors, another in McGowan if he can ever get healthy and another ace talent in AA or AAA. Not to mention another dozen plus solid starter prospects. Pitching wise future VERY bright
