Panthers at Leafs: The Most Important Game in the History of Professional Sports
Puck Drop: 7PM SNET-O
Tonight. Seven pee em. It happens. Your Toronto Maple Leafs will host the red hot Florida Panthers in a game that will determine playoff lottery positions. Florida sits five points ahead of the Leafs but a win tonight narrows that gap to (carry the six...) about three-ish points.
With ten games left the Leafs have the Panthers, Hurricanes, Islanders and Lightning in their sight. They probably won't catch them all but here's what they're up against right now:
| Team (Place) | GP | Points | L10 |
| Florida (25) | 71 | 69 | 5-4-1 |
| Carolina (26) | 72 | 68 | 5-4-1 |
| Islanders (27) | 72 | 68 | 4-4-2 |
| Lightning (28) | 72 | 68 | 2-7-1 |
| Maple Leafs (29) | 72 | 64 | 7-2-1 |
The Leafs' 7-2-1 in their last ten puts them behind only Phoenix (9-1-0) and Washington (7-1-2). They're tied with Detroit and Montreal, so they're playing some pretty good hockey right here.Tampa Bay seems to be free falling so with continued strong play from the kids and some luck they might get caught by the Leafs. You can bet that this team knows that finishing on a huge run and dragging themselves into 4th or 5th in the draft is going to make them look very good in the eyes of their GM.
The Leafs' PK was outstanding on Saturday night against the Habs and despite having only one opportunity they potted a PP goal with some excellent sustained pressure on Halak. Ex-Leaf Scott Clemmensen gets the nod against Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Luca Caputi isn't 100% over his tummy ache but will probably be in the lineup anyways.

the good thing is that Florida’s defense is nothing like New Jersey’s defense, so Clemmensen should be beatable.

how many years left in his contract? three or four? I’m with bk though, he was supposed to be better and could probably benefit from a change of scenery. I just think they will ask to much for the thin (prospects, picks and roster players) Maple Leaf team.
$4M per through 2012/13, and he’s only 24. It’s not like he’s over the hill…

Can’t see Stamkos making more than Kessel, unless Stamkos holds out.
While both were/are RFAs, Kessel had to go the trade route to get the big green. The Bolts should use what little leverage they have to contain their costs on the contract.
Whether or not they choose to do so is a separate matter.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
Stamkos also already has better stats than Kessel ever has, should this production continue to the end of the contract who knows

If Stamkos keeps up this pace, I could see a 5 year $6M contract for him. Though, if I’m Tampa I don’t sign him before free agency in case some team gets stupid and offers something ridiculous thus netting me four 1st rounders in the process.
I've always wanted to be a PPP Princess. You see kids, you can be anything you want to be; so long as Jay Leno doesn't also want to be that.

The deal will likely also depend on how many years of UFA status Stamkos is willing to forego…
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
Stamkos is putting up numbers the likes of which we have not seen from a 19/20 year not named Crosby or Ovechkin in a long time. Those guys are all making $8MM plus, I see no reason Stamkos won’t break $7MM on his next deal.
Assuming he continues at or above his current pace the next couple years he’d be an absolute steal at $6MM.
by The '67 Sound on Mar 23, 2010 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Even so, he’s a RFA so his leverage is still bound by those terms. Tampa still has the luxury of time. If Stamkos’ production falls next season, which it could, then that’s to Tampa’s advantage.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
Crosby, Malkin & Ovechkin all were RFAs too. Generational talents play by different rules. Stamkos is looking like one. 40-42-82 so far this year!

All three of those players had a few seasons to establish their play before their new contracts. Stamkos still only has one and half seasons to bank on right now.

Yeah but he’ll have another one before his deal is up.
by The '67 Sound on Mar 23, 2010 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions
And like I said, if Stamkos gets injured next season or his production shrinks, it’s to Tampa’s advantage. Just saying no need to jump the gun on his next contract and offer him megabucks just yet.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
Agreed
They’ll wait until next year. And will likely have to pay through the nose.
by The '67 Sound on Mar 23, 2010 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Tampa has a bigger problem with salary (i.e. cash on hand) than salary cap.
They’re waaaay under the cap this year.
by The '67 Sound on Mar 23, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Though that was by design under the previous owners. The new owner might not have a self imposed salary cap.
I've always wanted to be a PPP Princess. You see kids, you can be anything you want to be; so long as Jay Leno doesn't also want to be that.
Yeah, I just have my doubts about whether that market can ever support a max payroll. But you’re right, this year was artificially depressed.
I certainly agree with you that cap space isn’t much of an issue for them.

If Ryan Kesler can grab $5 million a year for six years, well, no matter the change in ownership in Tampa and all other factors I see Stamkos and his agent saying, “Look guys I am freakin’ better than Ryan freakin’ Kesler! I demand more money than him.”
Being robbed of a spot on Team Canada by Pat Bergeron has to piss Stamkos off. And Kesler with the phenomenal performance in the Olympics driving up his market price and getting the deal he got from Gillis has got to rankle. Maybe he will take it out on the Tampa GM and owners. lol Just jesting.
Anyway, I think the kid is much more complete than Phil Kessel – at this time. Could still grab 50 goals. And he’s a good Toronto lad. Give him what he wants.

Cox may have his many dumb moments, but he is still a hockey and Leafs reporter. Thus, he gets much more access and scoops than the vast majority of people. The criticism that follows him is that with so many resources at his disposal, many of which is only accessible to a select few, he doesn’t take advantage of them. Far too many times he writes hackneyed articles or lazy entries perpetuating the Leafs are unredeemable as a franchise or that Leafs fans are the ones to blame.

what is "sic"
"There's been four different Cup winners the last four years, and I got one of them (Anaheim) and it was a fighting team. We're playing it that way regardless." - B. Burke, Toronto Maple Leafs GM
“spelling incorrect” or “spelled incorrectly”…which doesn’t imply that you know the right way and are choosing not to. =P
“Sic” is actually the Latin word for “thus” as in “like” or “as”. It is used to denote a spelling, grammar or factual error that was present in original text that is being reproduced verbatim (i.e. the errors are being perpetuated in the interests of complete accuracy) by the present author.

Yeah nowhere else can produce jackasses in pink Abercrombie sweaters with white-rimmed aviators like Western.

lemme guess you went to athabasca? online degree?
that way your pale skin never had to go out in the harsh sunlight and face the dire emptyness of the outside world.
Who wants to hear a funny ass joke?
Guelph
And trust me, I was on Western campus for less than 5 minutes this weekend and saw two guys dressed like that. TWO IN FIVE MINUTES!
Not Liking Nikolai Kulemin Means You Have No Soul
I was driving back to school one time with my sister and one of her friends. My sister tried to defend the school when her friend looks at her and says “there actually is a high amount of douchebaggery at Western. About 90% I’d say.” And thats coming from a current Western student.
Not Liking Nikolai Kulemin Means You Have No Soul
there is, but the other 10% is fucking brilliant.
why people gotta hate?
Who wants to hear a funny ass joke?
i’ll admit I’m slightly jealous, my campus’s night life is dead.

Heh
I miss undergrad days. The most exciting thing people do nowdays is play slime volleyball or tetris.
Chicks seem to play tetris the most I found from my observation on campus

Karina
Found out recently that you were correct and I was incorrect re Burrows and turtling. Remember we disagreed re that? I was going off a second hand source who is usually reliable re all things Canuckian.
What is your opinion of Grabner? The Kesler deal? Mason Raymond? Would love to hear your views on the Canucks as I have a genuine interest in that team.
