Bruins 3 Leafs 2 (SO)
J.S. Giguere let in a laugher of a goal by Miroslav Satan in the first period and finished the game by getting fooled by Satan on a stupid little stick move in the shootout. It's hard to pin this game on Giguere because he played reasonably well the rest of the night stopping 29 of 31 shots (I think he saw more than 31 shots, he hit 30 with five minutes left in the third and definitely saw more than two pucks after, whatever) but the point stands that an NHL goalie can't gift the other team a goal.
Viktor Stalberg got a gift when he went minor league side low on Thomas on the rush before Boston took the lead again with a Johnny Boychuk shot that went through traffic and beat Giguere low.
In the third period newcomer Luca Caputi served a penalty for Colton Orr. Caputi came flying out of the box and broke up a play at the blue line before horsing the puck down ice where he ran over Dennis Wideman. The puck squirted out to Kulemin who dished a cross crease tap in goal to Tyler Bozak.
Phil Kessel had the game on his stick with time expiring in OT but was stoned by Thomas. Thomas robbed Kessel at least four times tonight much to the enjoyment of Boston fans who boo players they run out of town that return them good assets. I don't get it either.
The Leafs lost in the shootout which is no surprise; they're 0-9 in overtime and 1-3 in the shootout for a combined record of 1-12 after regulation. The Leafs lose an awful lot of one goal games. This could be construed as "unlucky" but really I think it highlights the Leafs lack of forward depth and poor goaltending.
I think there's hope here. The young kids acquitted themselves well tonight. Stalberg, Bozak, Kulemin and Caputi made smart plays and generated chances. Luke Schenn played another steady game and Dion Phaneuf looks to be on the verge of breaking out offensively.
The Leafs are off tomorrow night and will meet the Senators in Ottawa on Saturday. Let's hope they build on what was a solid effort tonight.

What if Burke signs him to a reasonable extension?

With the money going to Komi, Phaneuf, and Beauchemin, plus the fact that Schenn gets a raise from his ELC, I am not sure the Leafs can afford Kabs at even a reasonable rate going forward.

Let’s say the price tag is either $5 million for 4 years or $4 million for 8 years (basically a lifetime contract that pays him peanuts at the end). Obviously there will be a limit to the salary he can earn based on what we already have committed to defence (assuming Finger doesn’t move, which is pretty likely with his bad contract).
We require, as a team, proper levels of pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence.

I don’t think they can afford anything north of $4. Phaneuf get $6.5, Komi $4.5, Beauchemin $3.8, and $3.5 for Finer. Schenn’s ELC expires the same time as Kaberle’s curent deal, and what is a reasonable second contract for him? Some where in the $1.5-2.2 range depending on how he does next year? That is a lot of money tied up in defence. Even $4 for Kabs is going to be feasible if Finger is moved and probably not even then.

If Komi was healthy, I think we would’ve waived finger shortly after the deadline. We don’t need him, and we don’t lose much if we want to send him down. We’re still not spacey on cap, but I can’t see us keeping that contract around.
Even without Finger, I still think they have too much money tied up on the blue line, unless Kabs takes a pay cut. Our forwards are just too thin to have more than a third of the cap on four defenders.

Schenn’s contract right now has him peaking at just under $3 million with bonuses, so I don’t think Schenn’s second contract will be too much of a worry.
Here’s another thing, Burke likes to build from the net (and blueline) out, for better or worse. Which leads me to believe that if he feels Kaberle’s asking price is reasonable, then a deal will get done.
I agree that we are thin at forward, but I also don’t thing that closing one hole while opening up another is the best way to go about things.
We require, as a team, proper levels of pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence.

We need to trade him because of the simple fact that he is the only guy that can net us a decent return. Plus he isn’t going to get better than he is now and look at us now with his services, 29th place. Not blameing Kabby and i wish we were in a situation where we were competing and needed him, however we are rebuilding and the only use for him is to net us something good in return.
We need to trade him because of the simple fact that he is the only guy that can net us a decent return.
Simply put, no we don’t. People said similar things about the Penguins and Malkin, and look what happened there. Not to say that Kaberle is going to win us a Cup, but just trading a player because he can get you a good return isn’t always a good idea. There are a few reasons you trade players:
1. They want out
2. They don’t fit either on the ice or off it
3. You get an offer you can’t refuse
4. They have an expiring contract, you are not a contender and re-signing them is not very likely (i.e. anyone talented who has ever played for Atlanta)
Now, assuming that the Leafs and Kaberle talk extension and Kabby wants more money than the Leafs can afford to give him (thank you very much Fletcher for Finger, you moron) then he should be traded. And he should be trade at or near the draft since Burke wants present value over future value, and you generally don’t get present value for rental players at the deadline.
Personally, if the Leafs and Kaberle can work out an extension that is financially feasible, I say they do it. The main reason is that we don’t have anyone in our system with Kaberle’s offensive skill set who can replace him on the powerplay and be our top puck mover. Both Phaneuf and Beauchemin are checkers/shooters who are improved when paired with Kaberle (especially on the PP), but neither are apt at distributing the puck amongst players and getting the offence started with a good first pass.
However, if Kaberle is demanding too much money ($6 million, for example) then we must trade him while we can still get something that can help our team when the puck drops on the 2010-2011 season.
We require, as a team, proper levels of pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence.

Ridiculous. He’s still a damn good puck moving defenseman, and until things get too physical, he’s not bad defensively. His stickwork and breakout skills are still damn good, imo. I’d rather hold on to him than see him net less than a top-quality return. There’s a reason he’s in demand.
I think he should definitely be traded. If Phaneuf plays most nights the way he did tonight, we have our franchise dman.
Phaneuf Phever, an upgrade in skill and alliteration!
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind if kabby gets traded, and I’m not saying “Never ever trade him!”, but I’d rather keep him than settle for a less-than-ideal offer.
Phaneuf has a beast of a shot, and I love to watch him use it, but he isn’t a the playmaker that kabby can be. I think there’s more overlap between Beauch and Phaneuf than there is Phaneuf and Kaberle.
Hope they repeat the last Ottawa game.

Caputi had a great first game.
Rickard The Terrible looked a little less like his usual self, which was nice.
Shoestrings had some good grinder shifts.
Giguere gave up rebounds, and a bad goal, but at least managed to finish the game strong.
Kessel wasn’t exactly clutch.

On the bright side, the Leafs penalty killing has been much better and Sjostrom has really solidified that role.

Wall of text, largely stats-free opinion.
So I went to the game tonight. Lundmark was very impressive. Good job getting open, good effort on the forecheck, but based on that game alone, it looks like he might have a set of stone hands. I think he’s a great pair with Sjostrom; he’ll be a damn good third liner (but I’m getting a little tired of saying that). I’d be a lot happier with him if he were about 4 years younger (he’s 29), but I think that was a good game from him.
Phaneuf. Workhorse. What a beast. He had a couple good rushes, a few shots, and almost never sacrificed defense for selfish play. I know we pay him for offensive production, but if I got a season of tonight’s play, he’d have lived up to his contract for the year.
Schenn. Exactly the game I want to see from him as a developing defenseman. Played behind the net when he should, got a couple good scoring chances (Against a one-year-off-Vezina winner he didn’t convert, big whoop), and threw the body. Gunnarsson. Again, a lot of praise for him.
Kulemin, Bozak: Very much like. Good game from both of them. Good chances, looked alive, both defensively responsible. I still consider them the backbone of this forward corps, and I’m happy to see them playing together again.
Caputi: Meh. Low ice time, but I barely even noticed when he was on. The second assist was a nice play, but I get the feeling it was borderline accidental. A good pickup + play by whoever got the first assist (Kulemin?). He had a good screen attempt I saw at one point, and does know how to throw his weight around (something poni rarely/never did, I’ll add).
Kessel…choked. As usual. Lead in shots, too. I’d like to see him play with Hanson and Caputti, if just for curiosity. Two bigger kids that know how to hold the front of the net and set up a decent screen. Kessel’s shootout attempt was nice; props to Thomas’ glove. On the T ride back, I asked someone, “So…he didn’t ask to be traded. Why does everyone hate on him?” The answer I got was “No, dude…he wanted to get traded. He did.” They were drunk and didn’t know what they were talking about, so I didn’t push it. I get the feeling it’s just fun for them to feel like they’re actually making him choke, and for all the performances he’s had in boston this year, they may be.
The bruins looked sloppy. They resorted to hitting the body (they often do), and I was glad to see the kids go toe to toe with them. (As an aside Orr’s second fight was a win, imo; not cool of the Bruins’ player to lift up Orr’s knees while getting up.) I knew we’d lost when we went to the shootout, but overall I did get a bit of a warm fuzzy feeling; after the Olympic break and loss, it’s nice to remember that there may yet be an upside to the high risk we’ve taken on.
This seems to be in line with most people who saw the game on screen or listened in. Glad to know you saw it the same way live. I was generally satisfied with Caputi and think he’s a good, industrious forward with some evident offensive skill. Skating wise, he’s choppy, but I don’t think it’ll prevent him from sticking in the NHL if he continues to improve. Of course, the five-seven game mark is far more important than tonight, so we’ll have reserve initial judgment for now.

Not sure that forcing four big saves from Thomas is choking.

Once again, PPP shows why he is an overlord. Seriously, Kessel was awesome, and showed that he is over his fear of playing in Boston.

I just get the feeling that Kessel just has a mental block right now against the B’s, but he is close to getting over it and when he does the floodgates will open.

He was definitely miles better tonight than in any other previous games against the Bruins. He looked to have much more confidence, was skating much harder and seemed more prepared to compete.
I think he’s moved on past the anxiety that ruined his first couple of outings against the Bruins.

He was smiling and laughing after that final shot on Thomas, when he and Bozak broke in on a 2 on 1. He knew it should have gone in.
If he sulked back to the bench, I’d be worried, but the fact that he was relaxed enough to laugh it off shows his composure is miles ahead of his first game back in Boston.
I have nothing interesting to say.

Kessel DID ask to be out.
But still, it’s dumb to boo the guy. He had some solid time for the B’s, he just didn’t play up to his potential often enough, he left exuding a self-absorbed elite athlete attitude that, I feel, he had. In the end, I think he decided that he didn’t feel wanted (he wasn’t) and played that way. Two-way blame, but, like all marriages that end, there’s fault on each.
BTW, on one of the saves PK sketed by TT and said “nice save” to him. Classy.
As a B’s fan, I’m really hoping he does well. He did have a good game last night, no doubt. His forte was usually the SO one-on-one, but he couldn’t convert. TT stood on his titties last night so, not many were gonna beat him.
I hate that I can't sign off with "bt" anymore.
He got stuck in a situation where he deserved to be paid much more than Boston was able or willing to. In the end, it worked out great for both teams. We got a proven NHL sniper and you guys got 3 lottery tickets and a sputtering offence.
In the end, the system worked for the Bruins and Kessel though. I get booing him though. I still boo that SOB Vince Carter because I loved him so much before he started tipping opponents off on plays.
