Around SBN: Super Bowl XLVI: Eli Manning And The Meaning Of 'Elite'

If the Phoenix Coyotes make the playoffs, I’m very, very curious to see what the ninth-place owner in the West has to say. They deserve to get in, and if the team was actually run by a person and not the NHL, we’d all be saying, "There’s an owner who’s really committed." But everyone else is paying the bills, and is causing hard feelings among the other contenders.

Paying a ton of money to your competitors and watching them get a playoff spot would be really annoying.

I heard some rich guy wanted to buy the team and move it somewhere profitable but no owner actually wanted that to happen.

far more interesting to me
The other was Darryl Sutter. No one had any issue with giving Matt Stajan four years, but let’s just say they were less impressed with the $14 million. "That’s going to make everyone else’s job a lot harder," one said.

The Phoenix thing seems to be a bunch of whining, to me. They’re not making the playoffs because they’ve spent to the cap to get the best players – they’ve been smart with their money, and play a good system. If the owner whose team ends up in 9th place is upset, he should replace his GM and coach with someone better than Maloney/Tippet.

Those quotes from GMs are funny. “Waaah you spent too much on a player which drives up the cost for everyone”.

That GM has to live with it. If Sutter wants to make that deal he should. If I was a GM trying to sign a player I’d point out that in the salary cap NHL being paid more than you’re worth could mean you end up in the AHL.

It’s the same as people who complain that scalpers bought all the tickets to the game. There’s a market out there with people willing to pay top dollar for assets. You don’t get to complain that what you want is too expensive if other people happily pay the price.

This could have all been avoided had the NHL approved Balsillie’s offer to buy the Coyotes. But no, they rejected it and now you have infighting because the Coyotes don’t suck. Surely that’s much better right?

Something interesting to note about the Coyotes: Only 3 drafted players since 2005 are on the roster. (Hanzal, Yandle, Tikhonov). Mueller has been traded and Turris, Summers, Boedker, and Elkund-Larsson have yet to make an impact in the NHL. That team hasn’t been built through the draft. It’s been put together through UFA signing, waiver pickups, and smart trades. It’s amazing what savvy GM moves, good coaching, and great goaltending can do for a team.

Incorrect.

Bryz is turning into a great goaltender, but the shot quality that he’s facing this year vs. last is night and day. The d pushes the shots to the perimeter and he has all day to save them. He’s not getting guys lost in front of the next like the keystone cops anymore.

Obviously Tippett has done a great job with the team and Phoenix has had a lot of unknown quantities step up big, and good for them.

But looking at the numbers, it’s hard to believe they’re not overperforming, at least a little bit. Their shots for/against and goals for/against are about equal, and as such their goal differential is pretty close. They happen to be 4th in the NHL in overtime wins, so we’re talking lots of close finishes. If I had to put money on it, I’d say goaltending and some luck here and there will do a lot in pushing an decent team to the heights they’re currently at.

I’m not saying that Phoenix doesn’t deserve to be up in the spot they’re in, or that in another year they wouldn’t be in the playoffs. But there’s a lot of reasons to suggest that there’s a bubble that they’re riding, much like last year’s Bruins, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it were to burst either this season or next and take a bit of wind out of their sails.

(woo mixed metaphors)

by koopa kid on Mar 8, 2010 5:42 PM EST up reply actions

Sure there's some of that.

But having watched every game this year and every game last year and the ones the … you get the point. THere’s a tangible difference in how this team plays even if they’re winning 1 and 2 goal games and getting out shot. Bryzgalov is a big part of what’s been going on, but the majority of the time he doesn’t have to make outstanding saves, which he does, he just has to make a lot or routine saves that the team is happy to give up. When a large chunk of shots are coming from the boards without guys in the way so he can see it’s going to be fairly easy to stop.

That being said, I think that you’re somewhat correct in your assessment in that the Coyotes have got to find a way to get scoring. They don’t score nearly enough goals for my tastes. But They brought in Wolski and Stempniak (yeah I know he’s not a huge scorer) and they’ve looked good with the team so far even with a small sample size. For this season I think they’ll give anyone a run in the playoffs and shouldn’t be a surprise if they get to a final they look that good when they’re on. They do have a ton of UFAs this summer though so it could be totally different next year.

Especially if they are still under NHL control. If they can find an owner before the UFA period begins, there is a chance at keeping this team together. Apparently Phoenix is about $1 million under budget. If that is true, I don’t think the NHL would allow for even a $40 million budget if they still haven’t found a worthy owner.
