1991's Turn
Well last week, when I initially figured out how to work DOS Box, I featured one of the best games ever, from 1993 - Scorched Earth. This week, being sick, afforded me the opportunity to find and play one of my personal favourite games - Mega Lo Mania. I was only about 8 years old when my brother bought his very first computer - an Amiga. His first game purchase was Ports of Call (which it seems is now available for the iPhone), quickly followed by Shufflepuck Cafe and Mega Lo Mania.
Now, I've played other games since Mega Lo Mania with a similar concept: fight as a God/Warlord to gain control of the planet. But none of them have ever been as fun to me as Mega Lo Mania. I think the difference has to do with how in Mega Lo Mania, you can develop better and better technology to try to win each individual Island. Of course, when I was a kid, I didn't really care about winning, I just thought it was really cool to see what weapons you could develop as you got into more modern times. But now I have actually figured out how to win, and with my recent illness have made it to the 5th Epoch (halfway through the game). I can't wait to get to 2001 and have men with lasers and UFOs, just like in real life! ;) Anyways, after I finally beat this game, maybe I'll switch over to another classic I played on my brother's Amiga: Where in the World is Carmen San Diego.
If you've had enough of my ramblings about ancient video games, you can read the links below the jump.

Simmons
is perhaps the worst sports-journalist covering the Leafs. Even worse then Dimanno.
has told old friends he "can’t stand playing for Wilson"
"He’s had enough," a good friend said. "He’s at his wit’s end with the guy."
I don’t know for sure that this isn’t true, but I’m not gonna believe it just ’cause Steve Simmons wrote it. It reads like tabloid-style garbage.
the "stressed out" dad-of-six is trying to deal with his own issues in a bid to "pry himself loose" from Angelina.
"Brad’s been very stressed out for months," says a ‘friend.’ "Things have not been going very well for him.
"He needs a change and a fresh start. If he didn’t seek the counsellings he might have died, that’s how bad it’s been."
Fuck you Steve Simmons, you hack.
And if Wilson is calling out the team’s longest serving member and 10th-highest leading scorer in franchise history publicly rather then engaging him respectfully in private, then that’s really poor form and I don’t have much confidence in this coach getting along with anybody for very long.

Also, if I was an professional athlete that was reserved and iclined to privacy, I would be absolutely furious with any so-called “friends” that had spoken on my behalf about my personal feelings with a jack ass like Steve Simmons. That would be then of the friendship right there.

Tomas Kaberle is Czech. I’m willing to wager all of his old friends are also Czech and live there. Did Steve Simmonds go to Czech to talk to Kaberle’s old friends? I think not.

If Kabby can’t take a public tongue lashing once in a while, then screw him. Honestly, how long has it been since Wilson took someone to task publicly? Better yet, when has he done that when it wasn’t warranted?
Agreed the Simmons piece is better served in a tabloid rag, but if Kabby really feels that way, then he has two options:
- be a man and accept the responsibility for the errors being blamed. then work to improve them.
- turn tail and run ask for a trade. any trade, to anywhere. tell Burke: “forget the NTC, I want out.”
If this is the guy so many feel should be captain of this franchise, then I would hope he chooses #1.
I have nothing interesting to say.

Who says Kabby can’t take a public-tongue lashing graciously? Only Simmons.
If it’s true that the writing is on the wall for Kaberle, with just 5 games to go in his 820-game Maple Leafs career… he could’ve picked a better time to call out Kabby’s +/-… like at the end of November, when it was a minus 9 and might’ve mattered.

You will need to elaborate. Off hand only thing I can think of from that year is Pearl Jam – Ten and Nirvana – Nevermind both came out that year
Fairweather fans can go to hell
Sports
- The Twins and Braves face off in one of the greatest World Series of all time
- Whitney Houston sings the national anthem at the Super Bowl
- Scott Norwood’s famous missed kick
- First year of the Carter/Alomar/Devo era. Late in the year, the Jays sign Dave Winfield.
- The Leafs hire Cliff Fletcher.
TV
- NBC still has Cheers and the Cosby Show in it’s Thursday night lineup, with Seinfeld slowly gaining popularity in the background
- Fox has it’s best year, with the Simpsons, Married With Children and In Living Color all in their prime
- Saturday Night Live enters the Sandler/Spade/Farley era.
Movies
- Silence of the Lambs wins everything at the Oscars
- Terminator II, arguably the greatest action movie of all time comes out
- Beauty and the Beast is nominated for an Oscar, reviving the animation genre which is still going strong
- That’s pretty much it… it was a terrible year for movies.
Music
- Guns N’ Roses releases Use Your Illusion I and II, arguably the greatest achievement in the history of music. They’re also the last two truly great stadium rock albums, because…
- Grunge goes mainstream thanks to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc.
- Naughty by Nature releases your favorite rap song of all time, “OPP”
Gaming
- Tecmo Super Bowl released
- Computer games released included Civilization and Lemmings,
- EA Sports launches the NHL Hockey series
- Did I mention Tecmo Super Bowl?
