Jussi Rynnäs Not Coming To Toronto?
The Finnish version of Jonas Gustavsson, Jussi Rynnäs, is apparently down to a short-list of teams. Unfortunately, that list does not include the Toronto Maple Leafs. A Finnish news report was found by JaredFromLondon and translated by our very own sleza:
Ässä (name of the crappy team - sleza) goalie Jussi Rynnäs has ended his North American tour. The Pori resident who has attracted great interest among NHL teams was exploring 5 different organisation. During his eight day trip Rynnäs visited Dallas Stars, Philadelphia Flyers, Phoenix Coyotes, Minnesota Wild and Montreal Canadiens.
- Now I can say that I will leave Ässät. It will be nice to see what I can do. Deciding the team is so big and important decision in my life that it has to be thought through, Rynnäs says.
Rynnäs is likely to make his decision during next few weeks. Ässät will receive a transfer fee from the NHL of $150-200K USD ($111-148K Euros). The final amount depends on how many players from SM-league (Finnish Elite League) will move to North America for next season
Rynnäs won the Finnish Elite League's trophy for the best save percentage after a largely unimpressive career. A big part of Toronto's ability to attract Jonas Gustavsson last year, aside from the history and importance of the team, was that he would have an opportunity to establish himself as the team's future in net. This year with the acquisition of Jean-Sebastien Giguere and the re-signing of Gustavsson that opportunity is not as clearly felt. Just off of the top of my head each of those five teams offer a better opportunity for next season although it's not clear which one will be the best long-term fit. This makes two European free agents that the Leafs have or will miss out on this summer including the Norweigan Hobbit.
Update: I've updated the post because new commenter made a good point about the fact that the article doesn't say that he has narrowed his choice to those five cities just that those are the ones he visited. Lance Hornby actually had a story two days ago about the pursuit that paints an interesting picture:
Brian Burke and right-hand man David Nonis made a secret trip to Helsinki a few days ago with the purpose of landing 6-foot-5, 22-year-old Jusii Rynnas. They are awaiting a decision from Rynnas, who is trying to decide which team will give him the best chance to break into the NHL.
Burke’s visit wasn’t enough to convince Rynnas to become a Leaf on the spot, but when he came to North America a few days later, for scheduled NHL window shopping in Edmonton, Dallas, Anaheim, Philadelphia and Montreal, Burke got wind of the trip. He caught up with Rynnas and his agent in Montreal, this time bringing along the Leafs’ netminding guru, Francois Allaire to make a further impression.
Allaire is a benefit to the sales pitch but it cannot be a good sign that the Finn did not make a trip to Toronto and did not inform Burke of his visit to North America. However, it seems that not all hope is lost.

I really hope having Giguere doesn’t mean we lost out on developing a prospect. Remember the last time we let a goaltending prospect go because we had two?

It may have meant replacing one Finn with another Finn…but Toskala needed to leave pronto. He was a threat to everyone’s enjoyment of Leafs hockey.
well right now I think the Leafs only have one with potential in Reimer, then they have Engalage who needs a boat load of work
what ever happened to munro?

Gustavsson’s nowhere near the finished article. He’s played pretty well, but he’s still working on realising his potential.

well yes, but at least he is in the NHL, had Rask or Pogge been in the bigs and looking to be number one JFJ wouldnt have had to trade for raycroft

Munro was on a contract with the Marlies. According to Wikipedia, he now plays for Sibir Novosibirsk in the KHL.

I recall that he had the offer to go to Russia from the start of the season, but stayed in Toronto because of the Toskala/Gustavsson injuries opened up spots on the Marlies, and he’s from St. George so he’s a bit of a local boy.
Once everyone got healthy he left for Russia.

I don’t think Munro was ever considered a prospect, when he was with our organization.

Well the leafs hands are pretty tied right now. They had to get rid of toskala and we got giggy who has been relatively okay. Now we sign Gus to a two year contract and another prospect comes along. I think the leafs have to decide between actively pursuing this guy and taking the risk of two rookie goaltender or stick with what they got and just let this one pass. This guy, like Gus, wants to play in the NHL right off the bat I assume and at the moment you just can’t do that here. At least we didn’t draft him and trade him for a raycroft.

We lost on out this kid for the same reason we got Gustavsson last year; there was an opportunity for the guy to come over and immediately be a goalie in the NHL.

I heard he wasnt pressing to play in the NHL, but whatever, we have the monster!

Dallas he’s behind Lehtonen, Philly behind no one really, Phoenix he’s behind Bryzgalov, Montreal behind Price and Halak and Minnesota he’s behind Harding and Backstrom.

three depending on how he’d compare to Reimer

Reimer’s a doing an alright job in the AHL, I just don’t think he’ll ever amount to a #1 goalie maybe a 1B at the most and even that’s a stretch.

he’s only 22 and put up pretty decent numbers on the abysmal Marlies this year despite being injured for a good bit, so who knows

He would have been top 5 in GAA and SV% if he had played enough minutes and he’s still really young. They’ll probably look for a vet to mentor him next year.

I’m tapering my expectations, I love it when one of the kids come up from the minors and surprises us, like Gunnarsson.

In Montreal
he wouldn’t be behind Price AND Halak… They’re both RFAs, and as far as all indications go, only one of them will be back next season.
As for Philly, I’m guessing they’d be ok with welcoming Emery, and/or Michael Leighton back if they were healthy. Brian Boucher is under contract for another year also.
In Minnesota, Harding is an RFA also, so he may be on the move elsewhere.
Basically if I’m Rynnas, I would think the best opportunities to develop and get a regular chance to play are Dallas, Montreal, Philly, Phoenix, and Minnesota before I’d think Toronto. Every one of those teams likely has a possible opening for their backup netminder. Right now the Leafs have Gustavsson and Giguere.
The thing is though, if you look BEYOND this season, the only teams that have guaranteed NHL netminding are Dallas, Montreal, Phoenix, and Minnesota. Longer term, Philly and Toronto are the best opportunities to become the eventual number 1 guy, or at least a 1A if things don’t quite pan out completely.
I’d think he’s having more than just a 1 year outlook, unless he does what Gustavsson did this year and signs a 1 year deal, and then looks to jump ship as an RFA next season if things don’t open up for him wherever he lands this off season.

He'll go to...
Philidelphia, where when he needs a backup, they’ll put in Chris Pronger.

Toronto Still in it
All that article says is he didn’t visit Toronto on his trip not that those are the only teams he is considering. Burke and Nonis visited him in Finland and again in Montreal with Allaire so we are still in it
Yeah
I remember reading a while ago that Burke and Nonis went to Finland and he said he liked having Allaire. I made the ssumption because why not come to Toronto if he’s still interested?
Anyway, thanks for joining and for the comment.

not the Leafs "eh"??
looks like “someone” needs to do more research…welcome to the Leafs
Welcome
Thanks for joining.
Yeah, that’s why I added the question mark. First read over the article seemed to suggest he’d narrowed his list down to a set of teams that didn’t include Toronto. I underestimated Brian Burke’s skills.
