Iginla to Toronto? Boston Globe thinks it could happen

One word to describe this "possible" trade
Retarded.
Calgary already has puck moving defensemen in Bouwmeester, White, and Giordano who they will resign. And more than enough Top 6 players signed beyond next season in Langkow, Bourque, Hagman, Kotalik, Stajan, and Iginla.
Besides Iggy is that team’s heart and soul and best player by far. If Sutter wants to get fired though, he’ll make this trade.
I've always wanted to be a PPP Princess. You see kids, you can be anything you want to be; so long as Jay Leno doesn't also want to be that.
also throw in the price that Iginla would run (yeah but look what phaneuf cost , durk) and Iggys age.
if he came cheap and could be part of the leafs mini rebuild and help them contend for the cup in 3-5 years like Burke intended maybe.
but no, he is getting older, and is on the down swing, but still far too good to come cheap

He’s got 3 years left at $7M which is what would be freed up by Grabbo and Kaberle being shipped out. Now I love Iginla, but we already traded away his centre in Matt Stajan.
I've always wanted to be a PPP Princess. You see kids, you can be anything you want to be; so long as Jay Leno doesn't also want to be that.
not to mention that both Iginla and Kessel play on the right side. So either they’d play on separate lines or one would have to move to the opposite wing. Doesn’t make a ton of sense.
Plus, this seems like the kind of deal that a team makes when they’re on the verge of contending, not mid-rebuild. Plus, it would seem to go against the trend of Burke acquisitions (ie – young players with several years of financial control left)
if we’re talking about top 6 players, i’d have to think Burke would go after younger guys like Semin, Neal, or Carter before going after Iginla.
ding ding ding
I've always wanted to be a PPP Princess. You see kids, you can be anything you want to be; so long as Jay Leno doesn't also want to be that.
those players would probably be cheaper to attain too
not cheap of course, just lower value than it would take to steal the franchise from Calgary

First of all, I don’t think there is any chance of Iginla coming to Toronto. I don’t think Kaberle and Grabosvki would entice Sutter, and they’d still be up against the salary cap. However, if the Flames could move Iginla for a two good forward prospects and a first round draft pick, I’d think they’d do it.
Can we just get it over with and complete the team-for-team trade already?

I can foresee Sutter trading Toskala back to Toronto for Excelby and then us trading back Toskala for Hagman and White.
why dont we just trade them finger for white and walin for hagman?

Urrr….we can no longer trade players like Exelby, Wallin, or Toskala because they are UFAs. You can right their negotiating rights between now and the start of free agency once the playoffs are over, but that would be stupid.
You can trade White’s RFA negotiating rights, but he’s not such a bluechip prospect that he’ll get offer sheeted so that is also dumb.

This is “Vito from Woodbridge”-esque. What interest could either team possibly have in a swap centered around these three players?

A post at Puck Daddy lambasted an HFBoards user for suggesting this same trade. So I’m not exactly going to hold my breath waiting for this to happen, Boston Globe report or not.

This is as crazy as when my colleague told me that he thinks Burke is going after Thornton.
San Jose may very well get blown up after getting knocked out of the playoffs, but neither Calgary nor San Jose have any real use for Kaberle. Not to mention about 10 other reasons that it wouldn’t work out.
"Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?"
Anaheim might be very interested in Kaberle. They inquired about him at the deadline, but he wouldn’t wave. Especially if Niedermayer retires. Doesn’t mean Ryan coming back, but the Ducks do have two first round picks.
I could see the possibility of us getting Philly’s pick from them.

they dont have much in the way of forward prospects that interest me though, or even young players shy of Ryan, Perry and Getz

the flyers first and a prospect, possible (depending how deep the flyers go)
the ducks? probably not unless they are reeeeally hot on Kaberle or are perhaps able to talk to him and arrange an extension before the trade or what not

Anaheim, who is not a contender, is not going to give up a first round pick and a good prospect for one year of Thomas Kaberle.
like i said, depends if they can negotiate an extension, they have a huge hole to fill on D if Neids retires and they dont have much in the way of puck movers past sbisa who isnt ready
not saying it is an excellent idea, just that it is more possible than say pitts or philly or any other place people have been saying Kabby will end up

conditional pick for Kabs? I wonder if Burke would go for that – higher pick on condition he extends

You can’t go higher than a 1st, and Kaberle, with a year left on a great contract, shouldn’t go for anything less. And really should be worth more.

During the press conference announcing this deal, Darryl rips off his suit and shirt, revealing a blue LEAFS JERSEY!
What’s that? It’s Brian Burke’s music! Burkie rolls in and he and Darryl give Hart Foundation finishers to Ken King and Brent Sutter. The new dynamic duo stand over their fallen adversaries, arms raised, showing solidarity to their one, true team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

As much as I’d like to see Iggy in the Blue and White I just dont see him fitting into Burkes plans. I only see Burke trading away grabbo and kabs for prospects, picks and more young talent. Maybe if we were gearing up for a serious cup run next year trading for Iggy would make sense, but otherwise it just seems like a waste to me.
Both Calgary and Toronto will (should?) be seeking prospects/picks in ay trades, making them poor trading partners with each other. Surely the “make a run for it now” mentality in Cgy that led to Jan. 31 is now over.
Realistically the only kind of teams I can see interested in Kabs are playoff teams that might see him as the missing piece of the puzzle. Thus ruling out both the Ducks and the Flames. I would hope for a 1st (low in that round obviously when trading with a contender) plus a 2nd or 3rd and middling prospect.

Yeah, Boston have to be a primary suspect given that we know they have tried to deal for him (plus they’re very good defensively and terrible offensively). I agree re. NJ would be an ideal candidate if Martin walks. I’ve hoped Pitt would get in the running but perhaps they have guys in house they think can do what Kabs does, but cheaper.
I think it kills us that Kabs, a supposed PP QB, led the league’s worst PP. Not all his fault but he takes some of the blame no doubt.

I’d love to keep a Kaberle of old who wasn’t throwing pucks infront of the net (in the defensive zone) and being an impact player during the PP. It just seems however that he just isn’t meshing with Burkes new team. I think Burke will take another chance on him if he doesn’t get the return he wants. Then again if Kaberle doesn’t produce next year then its a total loss for the Leafs.
well thats the thing, burke has his price, if someone meets it, Kabs is gone, if no one does, then he probably gets extended (this time with no NMC)

Actually, New Jersey needs as much cap space as possible. David Clarkson is an RFA this season, and he’s getting a pay raise for sure, Zach Parise is an RFA in 2011 and will command a massive raise, so there will be a need for cap space. I can’t see this deal going through unless Brian Rolston ($5.062 mil/season w/ NTC) goes to Calgary, which is doubtful unless Brent Sutter’s fired. Plus if there’s anything New Jersey needs, it’s a puck Mover

Except that New Jersey will have a late 1st rounder in a weak draft and let their two top prospects go in the Kovalchuk trade.

I really don’t see Kovalchuk re-signing there long-term either. He hasn’t exactly lit it up under the NJ system.

NJ prospects
They have Tedenby and Josefson, who should develop into solid NHLers, though neither fits the Brian Burke mold.
Josefson looked damned good in the WJC, I’d take him as part for Kaberle

I still don’t think that Kaberle will get traded anywhere in the East. If you look at all of Burke’s trades this year (shipping out players ONLY), he never sent any of our boys, who were worth thier stink, to any team in the East. Especially when it comes to Kaberle, Burke is not going to send him to Boston or Buffalo, where we will see him 5-6 times a year. That amount of offensive skill will burn us for sure. Even out of the division (NJ etc) but within the East would not fit in Burke’s style.
Kaberle will go to the team who offeres the best package for him (as long as it fits burkes price that is)
location means nothing

I see your point and I agree Burke at the end of the day will try to get the best price for his asset regardless of where it goes and how many times we play that team.
And I might be overplaying his loyalty to players here, but Tomas obviously didn’t want to go to a lot of teams, a lot of media speculated he didn’t want to go West. Now that Kaberle isn’t holding all the cards, do you think that Burke will at least make an effort to send TK to a team he wants to be with? Or is it off to Hockey Hell Edmonton if they offer a little bit better than a team he’d rather go to? (which frankly I have no idea what was on that short-list of teams)

If Burke trades him, he’ll go to the team that makes the best offer. He’s willing to help players out in certain situations, but now Burke has all the cards, and he’s under no obligation to help Kabby out. He may try to send Kabby to a preferred destination, but he won’t promise anything, nor should he.
