Toronto Maple Leafs' Prospects Ranked 6th In NHL

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been ranked 6th in Hockey's Future organizational rankings. They've moved from being ranked 28th to 18th last year into the top ten during Brian Burke's tenure. These rankings have improve drastically since Brian Burke's arrival. Of course, as Burke is wont to note, in the team's top five prospects there are two selections, Carl Gunnarsson and Viktor Stalberg, made by John Ferguson Jr. in the seventh and sixth rounds respectively. This ranking is a good benchmark for Burke's tenure however it will be more impressive if it remains as high next year.

Hockey's Future largely 'graduates' prospects once they turn 24 or when they play 45 (goalies) or 65 (skates) games. The full details are available here but by their standards the Leafs are going to graduate four of their top five prospects next season and likely Christian Hanson as well if he re-signs. There's also a chance that Luca Caputi would graduate next season leaving six of the team's current top twenty prospects out of next season's rankings. Obviously, it's a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it means that Burke's done a good job of bringing in propects into the fold that look like they will be contributing to the big club. On the other, it will highlight just how volatile these rankings are and why it's necessary to have as many lottery tickets as possible.

Star-divide

Looking at the full prospect cupboard you can see that the Leafs are going to have a large group of players that are 2-3 years away from contributing if, frankly, they even ever come close to helping out the Leafs. The exciting aspect looking at the prospects listed is that there are a number of those that will likely be with the Toronto Marlies next season. In addition to the players that are already on the Marlies' roster - Keith Aulie, James Reimer, Philippe Paradis, Juraj Mikus, Phil Oreskovic, Richard Greenop, and Robert Slaney - the additions could include: Dale Mitchell, Mikhail Stefanovich, Keith Aulie, Chris DiDomenico, and Korbinian Holzer. The quality of the Leafs' crop of prospects after the top six will become more apparent next season. The pool would be deeper if the Leafs still had their first and second round picks this season but for now, let's bask in a little bit of good news and at least a partial feather in Brian Burke's cap.

6. Toronto Maple Leafs

Strengths: Prior to the start of this season, the Leafs prospect list was a list full of question marks. But it has become clear that the Leafs at the very least have some talent to work with in the coming seasons. First and foremost would be OHL star Nazem Kadri, who has come on in the second half of the season after a slow start in London. Two other forwards that appear to have a future with the Leafs are former collegians Tyler Bozak and Viktor Stalberg. Jerry D'Amigo, one of the stars for Team USA at the 2010 WJC, is another promising forward currently in the college ranks. The acquisition of Luca Caputi adds another solid forward with some size, a trait valued by Leafs' GM Brian Burke. In goal, Jonas Gustavsson has emerged as a legitimate future starter.  Weaknesses: Where the Leafs may lack future support is along the blueline, with trade deadline acquisition Keith Aulie and Carl Gunnarsson representing the only current prospects of real magnitude at defense. But, considering where the Leafs were after last season, the future is looking brighter. Top 5 Prospects: 1. Nazem Kadri, C, 2. Jonas Gustavsson, G, 3. Tyler Bozak, C, 4. Carl Gunnarsson, D, 5. Viktor Stalberg, LW

Without the draft picks at the moment, it’s just all that imperative for the Leafs to continue restocking the prospect pool with free agent signings. This is also why Hockey’s Future can be the most unreliable site in hockey. From their lack of devoted team writers, I can’t tell if they’re just throwing Leafs fans a bone after being so lukewarm with the same prospects in the past.

It’ll be interesting to see where they stand next season. I would guess lower half unless some of these kids have some huge seasons.

Yeah.

Doesn’t look like we’ll be pulling any Bozaks out of the college system again this year. Nor any Hobbits. We may wind up trading for one or two, though.

6th is good and all, but looking as almost all of our “top prospects” (aside from Kadri/Alluire) are Leaf regulars this ranking seems very misleading.

40 years we've stayed loyal, waited, and pained. That is the honor of being a Leafs' fan.

That’s why the next one is more important. This is based on a mature group of prospects graduating to the big squad. The next one will be more indicative of the team’s depth.

Hm. Yes and no.

To be honest, we know the answer to that question. As it stands right now, we will have next to no depth if we consider these ‘prospects’ to already be NHLers (save for Kadri, who is only a maybe). The only real question is: how many decent prospects can we hope to acquire through trade by then? We may very well wind up with a diamond in the rough from this 2010 draft, but we won’t know until much later. Also, with no college FA’s to fill out our numbers, we have to rely on trade.

I should recant. ‘Next to nothing’ is not accurate. But really, though. The only way we can replace the number of prospects that we will graduate to full-time NHLers next year will be by trade.

Yes

That will be one avenue that needs to be pursued.

Well, what I meant was that next year all of those prospects will be a year older and a lot will have had a full season in the AHL. We’ll have a much better idea what the team has in terms of prospects.

The same could be said of the Caps though, their top 5: Varlamov, Carlson, Alzner, Neuvirth, Perrault.

Only Alzner and Neuvirth aren’t getting regular time with the Caps, and from what i’ve heard, Alzner is on the fringe of graduating. Neuvirth seems possible to be the real deal eventually replacing Theo once his contract is up to have Varlamov/Neuvirth.

Not saying they don’t have any depth, but that the rankings are a little bit sketchy in what they consider “prospects” compared to what we might consider prospects.

Do I think Bozak, Gunnarsson, or Gustavsson will get sent back down to the A? Nope, and Stalberg could but I doubt it, depending on what burkey does in the offseason.

However, some other teams really deserve to be up there. The Preds, Kings, Oilers and Blue Jackets have just a rediculous amount of young talent.

It’s nothing more than a snapshot in time.

Using their criteria, they’ve rated our prospect pool as the 6th best this year. That’s almost certain to change as prospects develop or regress, as players graduate to the NHL, or as players arrive or leave the organization.

It’s phenomenal that we’ve improved in these rankings so much so quickly, but I wouldn’t put too much stock in next year’s rnakings if we’ve fallen back to the middle of the pack again. The system rewards franchises who have several players on the cusp of breaking into the NHL (which we have).

Considering where we were a couple years ago, it’s definitely a good sign. Without first round picks for the next two drafts (barring any trades), I’m sure we’ll drop back some but if the scouts and Burke use their later round picks well and find other prospects elsewhere enough to keep us in the top half of this list next year it will be a job well done.

Do you guys thinks that...

the fact the 4 of our top 5 prospects are already in the NHL is a good thing or a bad thing?

by dchoubak on Apr 21, 2010 12:38 PM EDT reply actions

could be either depending on how well they develop
it happens to teams all the time, groups of players who arnt break out stars like Crosby, Malkin, Toews etc usually mature in bunches

Good. It means that in one wave the Leafs were very successful in getting their players to the NHL.

But it could be bad going forward if there isn’t a similar group in the pipeline.

Someone help

This sentence:

Below is the bottom third of the NHL organizations in terms of prospects as voted on by Hockey’s Future staff.

is really causing problems with a difficult coworker. He says it means it is the worst 10 teams in the league, and goes off on that, despite the rest of the article explaining how nashville has the top prospects etc.

He’s a canucks fan so has difficulty with some concepts such as counting to 7, to be fair.

Anyone have an idea what they mean by that sentence? It is a little confusing.

by LeafFanInVan on Apr 21, 2010 1:54 PM EDT reply actions

I think they might have copied the introduction across all of the posts because clearly you don’t rank things with # 1 as the worst although I understand how, as a Canucks fan, that concept could be so difficult to understand.

That would make the most sense, just a copy error. I emailed the editor asking for clarification in a method I could use to explain to said coworker, ie small words.

Unfortunately due to the one gaffe he has classified the entire article and website as “utter garbage”.

This is someone who cheers for Burrows, however.

What a guy. My advice: ignore him because he wouldn’t know a hockey puck if it hit him in the face.

Rynnas’ signing should help out with the ranking once Gustavsson graduates.
