Trivia!
Win the undying admiration of your peers! ('Cause you ain't winning anything else.)
1. Hab fans have been kind enough to remind us of the last time the Leafs won the Stanley Cup. When was the last time they made a Final and didn't win it?
2. The Leafs have had three different goaltenders who set a single-season record for most regular-season games played by a goaltender (none set as a Leaf, tho'). Who are they? (Note - record is >70 games therefore all post-expansion.)
3. Who was the last Leaf goaltender to lead the league in GAA?
4. Who holds the Leafs' rookie record for points in a season (not Borschevsky - he was not a rookie by the then-standards)?
5. Three Leafs have worn number 13. Name them.
6. Rick Vaive was the first Leaf to score 50. Who held the single-season goal record prior to that? What was it?
7. In Henrik Lundqvist's rookie season, he set a Ranger record for wins by a rookie. The old record holder was much better known as a Leaf. Who used to hold the Ranger record for wins by a rookie goalie?
8. Only one member of the Hound Line was not a converted defenseman. Which one?
9. Which Leaf first-rounder took the longest time to play his first game as a Leaf? (14 years)
10. True or false - when Conn Smythe bought the team and changed their name from "St. Patricks" to "Maple Leafs," he was actually doing something that the previous ownership had been mulling all season.

There’s actually an easier cheat that that. I’ll tell you what it is later.

- 6 – Frank Mahovlich with 48!
- 10 – True because Toronto is a bastion of Protestant evil and St. Patrick’s was considered too ‘Papist’.

Question 6 – Yes
Question 10 – Probably, though the reason floated was to sync it up with the baseball team (don’t like the spelling? Blame it on 19th-century baseball). The whole “Maple Leaf Regiment” thing may or may not also be true, but the rumours of the name change predate Smythe. (See Holzman and Nieforth).

d’oh, the blog turned my “#8” into a 1…the above is the answer to 8

1. 1989: Calgary beat Montreal in the SC Final. I do believe it was the only time the Habs lost the Cup on home ice.
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
It was.
I thought that question was about the Leafs though.

OK – bad phrasing on my part. “They” meant “the Leafs.”
Shoulda been “we.”

Last time the Leafs made the SC and lost was 1960, to the dreaded Habs no less.

Wait – did Giguere ever set that record? Gotta see.
No to the others. Remember, they have had to have held the NHL record. Belfour’s 74 games wasn’t a record.

Yeah, I moved to Edmonton in 1971, started cheering for the Oilers (and still for the Leafs) in ‘72, but by ’79 was forced to choose. I had season tix, we had Gretzky, and you had Ballard. His being a compleat prick during the merger negotiations cemented it, but he was already well on his way to running his team into the ground again. If you’re interested, a while back I wrote this piece about my personal road to Damascus.

Damn, imagine if the Leafs had actually gone through with the plan to buy the Leafs. That would have been poetic justice.
