Nerd Alert: For all you NHL 10 players
I think it's safe to assume that despite being in my twenties, as I'm sure a lot of you are, video games are definitely no longer kids stuff anymore. The cursing and bashing I get in Uncharted while those guys are trying to kill me almost brings tears to my eyes for cryin' out loud.
One thing a lot of hockey fans have in common is that we always buy every year's copy of the newest NHL game. I'm willing to bet that at least 85% of us who post on here have between 5 or 10 NHL games for various game systems.
So I've got two questions for ya;
What titles do you have? Which ones would you rate the highest?
For me,
1) NHL 94 - Hands down the best sports game ever created
2) NHL 08/09 - Pretty much the same game. I just like the handling and the way the game plays.
3) NHL 2005 - The one with Naslund on the front. I played so much of this game on original Xbox. It's awesome
4) NHL 10 - It's alright, but can get really annoying at times so I can't say I like it as much as 08 or 09.
And then there's a second part of this to discuss.
For some reason I never use the Leafs in Dynasty mode. Call me superstitious or something, but I don't use the Leafs to win the cup because I think it'll jinx them. It's weird. I know.
I always use the Blues, Sharks or Coyotes. I don't know why. I don't like any of those teams, but they seem like they're the furthest from the Leafs or something.
What teams do you use? Do you always use the Leafs and mold the roster to how you want it?

Nerd out time
I’ve got:
1) NHL 2005 for Game Cube
2) NHL 2006 for Game Cube
3) NHL 2001 for PC
4) NHL 94 for Sega
I always play with the Leafs on dynasty mode, maybe I should stop, hasn’t done me any favours.
As mentioned in my 5 Things post my old University roommate and fellow PPP commenter Fleet Fox and I spent hours making trades and creating players to match the Leafs roster throughout the past three years. It was tough work and we tried to be as diligent as possible. Actually looking back now we made some serious misjudgments when we created Mitchell, Hanson, and Bozak last spring. We probably undervalued Bozak and made Hanson and Mitchell way to good.
As of right now I’m playing a lot of NHL 06 on the Game Cube (just swept the Habs in the first round). I’m buying myself a PS3 soon and have to decided whether I should get NHL 09 or 10 to play while I wait for 11 to come out. For those of you who have played both what do you recommend?

Get 09
NHL 10 still costs a zillion dollars and is a lesser game. Grab 09 for 9 bucks at EB Games and wait for 11.

Excellent. This was most likely my plan, but I wasn’t sure how good 10 was.

The best game of all is NHL 95 on the sega genesis. My friends and I still have working sega genesis's just for that game. BEWARE THE PASS GOAL!!!!!!! LOL
By pass-goal you mean when a player goes behind the net and you pass it to them and it just goes right in? Classic.
There is no "off-season" for Leafs Nation - Maple Stir-up
No, that if you’re cruising the neutral zone facing the net and you hit up (or down) and pass (B), it’ll go straight in, five-hole! My buddy used to burn me with that regularly.
Never see it coming as there’s no wind up as with the shoot button ©

Also a devastating move against somebody who controls their own goalie.

NHL 10 is hands down way superior to 09 in actual gameplay. Goalscoring increases tenfold in 09 in comparison to 10, which makes games less exciting when your goalie can’t make a save. At this point in time though its not worth it to spend all the money on NHL 10. May as well wait for 11.

NHL 94

NHL 10
Kessel in NHL 10 is still an 84 rating, B- potential. This makes me a sad panda.
It’s where I go to live out all my rediculous trade ideas. Because they actually work!

Do you ever find yourself basing your knowledge of players on the EA ratings? I confess to be guilty of this on more than one occasion.

It’s even worse in soccer when people use Champ Manager to do the same thing :)

Champ manager is soooo right on tho. To Madeira is a superstar doncha know. I think i’ve lost at least 4 years of my life to various incarnations of CM. IF they ever made a serious clone of that for hockey (ESHM doesn’t cut it for me) I’d never leave my house.

Love hockey games
NHL 94 was my fav as a kid growing up for snes, I also played NHL Stanley Cup alot, even though that game was pretty shitty.
When I got gamecube I played all the EA titles and most of the NHL Hitz ones as well, I would say that NHL 06 was probably my fav off that system.
NHL 09 and 10 are both great games, i found 09 to be a little less frustrating though, the AI in NHL 10 is annoying as fuck.
I always use the leafs in dynasty mode, I dont really beleive in superstisions that much. I also am usually a sucker for keeping the rosters identical to the real ones pretty much on a week to week basis. Like this year, once komisarek got hurt I stopped using him in the game and early in the season when Kessel was injured I patiently waited for him to return in real life.
Every now and then Ill just do a fantasy draft for fun (only in 06 and 10, 09 doesnt have a fantasy draft) but i rarley ever finish those seasons.
I played 09 online a ton and had a pretty decent record, i think i was somewhere around 400-100. I have barley touched NHL 10 online as i havent really had as much time for it this year.
I also enjoyed creating current leaf teams in NHL 06 for gamecube and had similar misjudgments when creating players. I pretty much made hanson, mitchell, stalberg, bozak, schenn and gustavsson all stars haha. Needless to say the leafs are rated like 98 and kick some serious ass haha.
There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E"
Haha That’s awesome that you actually sat out Kommy. True to the integrity of the game for sure.
The AI in NHL 10 and the after the whistle stuff blows my fucking mind. How they thought it was a good idea is beyond me. It fuckin blows. 08 and 09 have way better flow to the game I find.

Ah,
One of my big complaints with the NHL series is that it doesn’t deal with the idea of momentum and pressure well. If you consistently outhit and out work the other team it doesn’t seem to translate to the game. I thought that the scrums after the whistle might change that.

Indeed.
That’d be an awesome thing to add to the game. I think they tried it once, but it didn’t go well. I don’t know what year or platform or company it was for, though.

I think I can remember that actually. I wonder what game it was though.

See our problem was that we tried to be realistic, but this was when JFM was tearing down the biz and Hanson and Bozak were largely unknowns. We made Kessel and Phaneuf into superstars though. Funny thing about NHL 06, Dan Bylsma is in it.

A little different
Gotta say I only ever played NHL games on computer – I’m 23 now and bought NHL 98, 99, 00, 01, 02, 03, 04. My computer is too old now to handle the newer ones, and I’m actually not sure if they still make em for computer
In NHL 99 you used to be able to check/slash the goalie! If I was feeling a bit crazy I’d turn all the penalties off and go buckwild on the goalie and get a few cheap goals this way. The fun would wear off after a period or two, and I never finished those games…
The other thing I like for 99 was once a “star” icon appeared under your player (depending on what his talents were) you could press a key and he would do a special move. A slick dangler like Forsberg would get into the slot and try a between the legs wrister! Little bit risky but looked beautiful if it worked. A power forward like Shanahan would speed towards the net, and once the star came up, press the button and he’d do a quick swoop behind the net to the other side and try a wrap-around/jam play. I also used to love some of the players with heavy shots, the one guy I’m thinking of was a created player, so he had great speed and an absolute bomb, but when the star came up he sortof leaned back a little a rocketed a shot off balance at the net. Not totally sure why anyone would try this particular move in a real game but it looked sick on the computer.
Anyone else remember this, or even feel like maybe I have it confused with NHL 2000 (Chris Pronger)? I really don’t think I do, because NHL 2000 was all about scanning your face and putting it onto a created player…also pretty awesome and something you can’t do on the xbox!! Imagine if you could actually put your face onto a player with graphics the way they are now?? Cool!!!
99-2002 on computer are sweet. I can remember the goalie slash and star players.
The worst NHL game ever has to be NHL 99 on Nintendo 64. Nothing can be worse than that.

Good ol' EA Sports.
NHL’94 – Sega CD and on my computer as a ROM
NHL’96 – ROM
NHL ’99 – PS1
NHL ’00 – PS1
NHL ’07 – PSP
I really stopped playing video games for a long time until I was really hung over one day and decided to buy a PSP. I had just been to a wedding, and decided that the only thing I was going to do for the rest of the day was to buy a hockey video game and sit in my air-conditioned room. ‘07 is still pretty old though, and I have to create 2/3 of the players currently on the Leafs’ roster anyway.
As a side note, downloading NHL ’94 and ’96 pretty much got me through the most boring class of my entire university career: Business French. Shudder.
"Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?"
NHL 94 is too good.
No goalie can spring you for a breakaway like a 94 goalie. Precision passing.

I have or have had:
NHL 94 for Sega and SNES
NHL 95 for SNES
Ice Hockey for NES
Blades of Steel for NES
Then for a long time nothing happened because I was a broke student and couldn’t buy any new games.
NHL 03 and 05 for PS2
Now I’m a parent, young professional and adult student and don’t have hardly any gaming time any more, outside of Guitar Hero. My last game purchase was Cars.

I got in late to video game hockey. Before college I hadn’t played a hockey video game since Blades of Steel. Then I got into NHL 2003 for PS2, me and my buddies would play in my basement apartment between classes. I got each year’s version until they started making the games for the next gen consoles. They really started fucking the dog with the PS2 versions once the next-gen consoles came out. Now I’m still playing NHL09 for PS2 until I get a PS3, which probably won’t be for a while.
I like be a GM
My totally legit pro difficulty be a pro sniper is averaging something like 2 goals a game in NHL10. The gameplay is just covered in little annoyances that sort of kill it for me. I always liked be a GM but I think 2k does it better. I haven’t tried 2k10 but in 08 the GM mode seemed so much better.
In NHL10 – How about I rediculously overpay you for that right wing prospect you got there partner, im up against the salary cap. “This offer is insulting.” What if i throw in some ultra crappy no potential prospect. “I was a little skeptical at first but id be crazy not to take this deal!.” The trade system is just plain wonky, I liked in 2k where you can ask what the other team wanted in trade.
He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.
Just because Jay McClement is the best defensive forward in the NHL doesn't mean he should win the Selke.
I played Blades of Steel (which I still own) and Ice Hockey on the NES.
Played NHLPA Hockey 93 until it melted on SNES and then NHL 94. Had a couple of PC years and now have NHL 09 for my XBOX.

I had in order:
NHL Rivals (Xbox)
NHL 2k6 (Xbox)
NHL 07
NHL 09
NHL 10
I’ve enjoyed NHL 10 far more than any of them. The gameplay is just so refined and realistic compared to the other games. Playing my power forward in Be A Pro is especially fun. Still, I find it hard to score sometimes because the goalie AI is too damn good.
I kind of miss NHL Rivals where every single wraparound attempt went in. The Minnesota Wild won the Cup that year with Marian Gaborik, Wes Walz, and young and promising player Richard Park all cracking 200 points. Good times.
Boo hoo!
NHL 10.
I am always, always the Bruins. I play either the Penguins or Habs and just try to hurt everybody.
In season mode I am 10-0-1 and average six goals a game.

NHL rivals was an extremely underrated game, spent hours playing 3 on 3 pond hockey. Had me and a couple friends versus guys on live. That game and Midnight Club 2, and NFL Fever were my first live games oh the memories.
NHL 98 was awesome, Habibulian was almost impossible to score on.
’01 – I loved the whole trading card thing
’00 – the stupid scan your face thing never worked always came out shitty
’07 – first time the skill stick was introduced, love it
On a side note – EA for created player would it kill you to put brown skin tones to create a player. There is nothing really between tanned Italian olive skin tone and light skinned black guy. I’ve been waiting for EA to fix this since 98.

I've spent more time with NHL than my GF... Time well spent
Starts with
Blades of Steel – Gameboy
NHL ’93 – Genesis
NHL Stanley Cup – SNES
NHL 2005 – PS2
NHL 09 – 360
NHL 10 – 360
Blades of Steel – ohh ohh i pick the fat guy… wait they all look the same…
NHL 93’ spent every saturday morning after hockey playing NHL till HNIC came on,
NHL stanley cup – glictch dump in goal from blue line, and the undeniable force that was the LA Kings
NHL 2005 – the one timer was born (and only way you could score)
NHL 09 – Dangle overload, pretty bad when i can go end-to-end with Colton Orr and roof it… Still closer
NHL 10 – Currently eating up most of time EASHL
Its not superstitious, I’ve never used to the leafs to win the cup, was always edmonton for some reason, even in NHL 10 i got drafted as a skater and goalie to Springfield/Oilers…
