Halak to St. Louis
Per RDS the St. Louis Blues have acquired Jaroslav Halak. No details on what the full trade is; expect it to be something substantial. An offer sheet for Halak definitely would have included a first round pick.
Update: It's Lars Eller and Ian Schultz. Does Eller's name look familiar? It should, he's the player picked with the first rounder that JFJ traded for Toskala.

I’m extremely worried that Habs got a great return for him.

if it’s just for his rights, my guess is either a roster player + conditional pick, or a pick, really good prospect + another conditional pick.
I’m really hoping it isn’t Perron or Oshie coming to MTL.

Look at their D corps for next season; they already have 7 D-men signed for over $20M if you include Subban. And there is no way the Blues give up Pietrangelo.

he’s still very young for a goalie. I don’t think he’s going to turn into a Raycroft or Toskala 2.0. Halak was the older of the two, wasn’t he?

I remember behind the net doing a ranking of goalies based on advanced stats, and most of them were much of a muchness, but Halak was actulaly one of the few who stood from the crowd as better. This poas possibly a major bonehead move for the habs, depending on what his contract negotiation was going to be like.
It would be even funnier if they signed Price to a long term monster contract that he never lives upto

Halak or Price? If either of those guys were getting that much I’d have just let it go to July 1 and take the RFA compensation.

Well interestingly
They didn’t even enter negotiations on a contract with Halak. I think Price would be looking at the 3 million mark, but now that he’s been told that he’s the starter, he might be able to ask for more.
But if Halak wanted 4.5 million, RFA compensation would’ve made more sense.

One Thing This Proves
Even Habs management knew this playoff run was a fluke. They take their best playoff performer and trade him, and get no roster players in return? Really?
Considering the Habs lineup, Lars Eller probably will be a roster player in 2010-11.
Still mind-boggling though. An offer sheet might get them 1st/2nd/3rd round picks.

The only thing that makes sense is that they’re getting young assets because they would rather use that money to re-sign Plekanec (which makes no sense vs. Halak), or to make a run at Marleau.

It’s not necessarily robbery for the Blues. As Mirtle points out on twitter, there will be abundant solid veteran goalies available cheap this summer. If STL has to pay big money to Halak they may well regret it.
NHL GMs are just starting to realize that outside of the Miller/Vokoun level, NHL goalies are a dime a dozen and should be paid as such.

On a one year deal for less than $2.5MM, I’d take any one of Nabokov, Turco, Theodore, Niittymaki, Ellis.
For less than $1.5MM I’d take Emery, Leighton, Biron, Auld.

$2.5MM, I’d take any one of Nabokov, Turco, Theodore, Niittymaki, Ellis.
I don’t think Nab, Turco will go for $2.5. Maybe the last 3, but I wouldn’t want any as my #1.
$1.5MM I’d take Emery, Leighton, Biron, Auld.
Comfortable as your #1? Unless you have the Detroit team in front of him, I wouldn’t be comfortable with any of them.

See also Ward, Osgoode and Fleury. The only premier ‘keeper to win the Cup in a capped world was Giggy (Fleury was paid like a premier netminder but the stats don’t back it up).

All of those teams’ goalies had damn good teams in front of them. Barring a spectacular offseason, I don’t see Montreal fielding an equivalent tier of players in front of any goalie.

It’s not a robbery by any means, but the return does seem light regardless for a goalie largely responsible for keeping Montreal in the playoffs for that long.

That’s just the thing, I wonder if NHL GMs are getting smarter and Halak’s trade value is not what the general public thought.
At the end of the day, Halak’s sv% in the playoffs was actually lower than in the RS (.920 vs. .924). He was either amazing or horrible.
The weird thing to me is apparently the first call from Mtl to Halak was to say “You’re traded” (per McKenzie). I can’t imagine they didn’t at least ask what he wanted.
by The '67 Sound on Jun 17, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Even without that redic playoff run, he was still a damn good goalie during the RS.

whoooo. the blues have needed a no. 1 goalie who is not a career backup since mike keenan pissed off cujo and sent him to vegas (and eventually edmonton). Is Halak that guy? Maybe, but I know he has more upside than Ty Conklin and Chris Mason.
And Eller, while a good prospect, never seemed like he was going to get a shot in StL. The Blues couldn’t score a damn goal last year and refused to call him up — they didn’t really seem to like him.

How does this impact Price’s negotiating stance? Caputi and Eller have very similar scoring rates in the AHL.
Schultz had 18 fights for the Hitmen last year. He put up 15 points in 23 playoff games and 55 points in 70 regluar season games. Not bad numbers for a 3rd round pick.
I wonder how Leaf fans would feel about these guys coming to Toronto – a little truculence and a little skill – in return for an RFA?

many, many, blues fans are thinking they kinda did
at the deadline, the blues traded former second-round pick aaron palushaj to the habs for matt d’agostini. it was supposed to be a move to help the NHL team now, but dags got the press box tour in stl.
a lot of blues conspiracy theorists thought the trade was really odd at the time and wondered if it would lead to something more.
I don’t think there’s much of a market for goalies right now. Folks on twitter are saying 25 teams have a starter locked up. I presume there wasn’t much of a market with the other 5?

Halak has more value than Ponikarovsky on the trade market and the Leafs would have more control of an RFA than a UFA.

I think Montreal felt cap-tied. 46MM over 14 players means they need to avoid notable roster players, really. They need so many kids on ELCs it’s scary. And that’s without a goalie signed. I refuse to believe that they couldn’t have gotten a better offer from someone else, but since they’re likely targetting kids that can play next year for cheap, I think they narrowed their options considerably.
So, to answer the question: I’d have been very unhappy if – with our cap situation – we lost one of the highest hyped goalies players in this UFA pool before the draft. Especially for a couple of rookies that have yet to prove that their game can stick in the NHL.
That’s a great answer, thanks.

As a Hitmen fan, I loved Ian Schultz. He was a great leader and did anything you asked of him, go to the net, throw a big hit, drop the gloves, etc.
He is not a great skater and doesn’t have very good hands. He scored most of his goals from Kozun setups or off Joel Broda rebounds. And he didn’t warrant much higher than a 3rd round pick, even in his last season. He has a chance to be a serviceable 3rd liner in the NHL, but that’s as high as I would predict for him.

Caputi v. Eller is a bad comparison, they’re nowhere near equal in talent level.
Similar scoring rates over their time in the AHL, yes, but Eller is almost a year younger, is a much better skater, is a more dynamic offensive player and had a very strong 08/09 season in the Swedish Elite League.
Their draft positions, while not a perfect indicator of their current value, it is still a fairly good gauge of what the scouting community felt about them only three years ago… a mid-1st rounder v. a mid-round pick.
Like Rick Bosetti my goal in life is not to do well but to piss on things.
Thanks for the edit.
I guess I should have said “similar scoring rates” and not “similar talent” or “similar potential” or “exact age” or “similar draft position” oh, wait…

Price doesn’t have the mental game that he needs to have if he’s going to play in Montreal. Games played: 41, 52, 41. I don’t see him being able to take on a 60 game schedule and come out with 30 wins.
Honestly, I think the smart move here would be to trade Price. Get the rights to one of the UFA goalies (and something else), have him agree to an extension before the trade. The problem is that with this (rather poor) Halak trade, I think they sank Price’s value, too.
Gauthier seems to disagree.
The mental aspect is probably true, but Price is only 22 vs. Halak at 25. At 22 years old you don’t necesserily see what a goalie really has to offer.
Price’s contract will be cheaper than Halak’s coming off this past season as well.
Keeping Price is, I think, the prudent move cap-wise.

Well, Price should be hitting his physical prime…when Gomez is coming off their cap. But imo, planning around goalies six years in the future is just flat out dumb. He’s saying that Price is a franchise goaltender, and will be so for 5+ years. I think he’s good, but I think he should really be out of Montreal, for his own sake.
Home games played: 20 Road Games Played: 21

RIght, but I mean to say that I don’t think he’ll develop into the goaltender they dream he’ll be if he’s mentally bogged down in Montreal. He’s just not the kinda guy that puts his head down and says “I’ll prove them wrong!” He’s Crybaby Carey Price.
Also, he’ll be UFA after this next contract. They need to get another good goalie in their system soon.

it would be beneficial for Price if the Habs do pick up a more experienced goalie, on the tail end of his career.
Think about Giguere’s roll to Gustavsson as a mentor. Surely Price as a 22 year old wasn’t learning much from Halak, a guy he was battling a job for.

Oh I totally agree with Blurr. They need to shelter the crap out of Price. But what I was trying to say earlier: veterans aren’t cheap. And MTL has 14 players signed and 46MM tied up.
Find someone who will play 45-50 games, post a .910 SVP, and will lay off MTL’s cap issue.
Mason won 30 games last year with the Blues and over the past two seasons has averaged a .915 save percentage and 2.47 goals-against average.
Exhibit A.

Yeah, he’s pretty much who I came up with too. He’s 35, though, so you’ll need someone shortly after him. And he made 3 mil last year…can they talk him down to 1-2?
Yes, because there are a ton of goalies available this summer and what they sign for will be less than what they want.
I don’t know why you’d need someone after Mason, though. Sign him to a cheap, 3 year deal, and then see where Price is at within that time frame.
"The only way out is in a body bag. Go Leafs Go." - Blinky
by Karina on Jun 17, 2010 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Mason on a 3 year deal ends up at 38 years old. Price would be 25. Mason is down to what, 20 to 30 games a year, I guess? If he’s still pulling .910?
I think they need to be aggressive on Dan Ellis. He plays very similarly to Price, and would be around for the three or four years they need to really shelter price.
The problem is that the second there’s any hint of a bidding war, MTL needs to bail asap. And every extra dollar price gets will slim down on your options for “protecting Price” goalie.
Dan Ellis would also be good.
Halak is 25 years old, and only being handed a starter’s job now, ideally (and this is hard to project) Price would actually be ready at the same age.
I’d also consider Nittymaki.

I'm not sure
Nittymaki is the type of guy who’s cut out to ‘lead’ Price in a market like Montreal. I expect them to go after Mason or Ellis
Always follow the Crown Trools
There are a couple options, but my major point was that they get cut down very quickly, both by role (playing a high number of games to shelter Price) and by cap hit.
I don’t know how they can even hope to keep Plekanec around. Scott Gomez might just be my favorite player.
Maybe if they can convince someone to front load a contract and drop the cap hit with extra years on the end…
I think they let Plekanec walk.
My read from this deal and Gauthier’s quotes is that he sees the value in good, ELC players and wants more of them in Montreal, rather than overpaying free agents.

their problem was that this summer there’s a plethora of goalies available, so they couldn’t get much in return for Halak. But to re-sign him would have been more expensive than signing Price will be, plus when you factor in age etc. I can see why they did it.

I apologize if this has been brought up already, but why are people obsessed with the fact that Eller was drafted with the Leafs pick? We have no idea who JFJ would have taken in that spot, so unless you want to consider every player taken after Eller in 2007 a potential former Leaf as well, get over it.
The Leafs could very well have drafted the late Alexei Cheraponov with that pick.

Really?
I don’t remember Rask winning us 2 rounds of the playoffs nearly single-handedly, but then again my memory isn’t what it used to be.
Also, I seem to remember this particular incident where a goalie trade didn’t quite work out, from Wikipedia
the Canadiens traded Roy and captain Mike Keane to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Jocelyn Thibault, Martin Ručínský, and Andrei Kovalenko,
I think although it was a serious blunder to trade Rask for Raycroft, it wasn’t as bad as this^^^

I don’t think you can really fault them for that trade not working out, they believed they were forced to deal him.
and the Sens were forced to trade Heatly.
