Veteran Forwards for Kaberle

So, with Tomas Kaberle all but gone soon, I thought it'd be interesting to see what kind of forwards are out there, like him, with one season left until UFA.  The following list is far from exhaustive, and most (all?) wouldn't be worth Kaberle, but nevertheless I was curious to see if there were any I'd consider taking for a season, and hope to swoon into resigning.  The way I see it, we need forwards, and if we get a decent quality one, and are able to keep him, it could go a long way to boosting us back to respectability (and the playoffs).

Star-divide

TEAM PLAYER 2010-11 Cap Hit*

BOS Patric Bergeron $4.75

BUF Tim Connolly $4.50

COL Milan Hejduk $3.00

DAL Brad Richards $7.80

LAK Justin Williams $3.50

MIN Mikko Koivu $3.25

NSH Jason Arnott $4.50

PHI Simon Gagne $5.25

SJ Joe Thornton $7.20

STL David Backes $2.50

TB Martin St. Louis $5.25

WSH Alexander Semin $6.00

*Cap hit in millions, from capgeek.com

Looking at the list, a few players could be of interest, though not all are feasible of course.  Bergeron, Gagne, and Connolly could be quality players if they could stay healthy.  Richards and Thornton have huge hits, but are huge producers.  St. Louis and Arnott are too old for our rebuilding team.  Koivu, Semin, Backes, are the ones who seem to match up well both in production and age.  Any thoughts on whether we'd be happy with a 1 for 1 trade for them?

Toronto Maple Leafs: Looking at next year since 1967

by LeafFan1989 on Jun 2, 2010 7:27 PM EDT reply actions

Even if they don’t resign? I guess even then, since they’d still be a nice upgrade in that they wouldn’t have a NTC and we could possible get something good for them at the deadline.

I doubt Burke is interested in taking a vet player for 1 year, if he got any he would probably immediately negotiate a longer term deal.

Just my hope/speculation.

Koivu or Backes

would solve the big centre problem the Leafs have.

Backes would also be a good fit with his relationship with Burke and Wilson through the US Nat’l team.

Mikko is the one I’d take in a second, he is on a good contract, he can score, he is very good 2 ways and he is very under the radar

Yeah, I doubt with Burns and Zidlicky that they’re looking to acquire Kaberle at the cost of their best forward. That said, I still love the guy.

Agreed.

This is a bit of dreaming I think, but frankly after some of the other outrageous trade proposals i’ve been reading lately, this is a breath of fresh air in comparison.

Yeah, but I can at least see a set of circumstances where we could trade for Backes. It’s not like the ludicrous spare-parts-for-Bobby-Ryan rumours that have been doing the rounds.

Backes seems the most likely. Koivu if he wasn’t so good too, since look at how Minny shielded MA Bergeron during his time there—they could pull the same stunt for Kaberle.

Burke has said he wants a big scoring winger with some physicality, right? Eric Fehr maybe (though WSH probably doesn’t want Kaberle—need a third team then)?

I honestly wouldn’t be that surprised to see Connoly coming back… the Sabres GM stated that his priority this offseason is to get a puck-moving defenseman, and when he was asked if Connoly’s returning he said something along the lines of “Well, I don’t now… I guess he’s signed though, so yeah”.

I’d have to want Connolly+. Many comments over at Die by the Blade think he has 0 trade value.

Also, I noticed Buffalo prospect Zach Kassian decided to go get himself arrested on an assault charge. Nice one!

Luckily for us, Darcy Regier realizes that trade value for a 60-point player is much greater than zero, unlike everyone else who only counts his last 6 games (when with a broken foot while determining his trade value. Especially when its the player that single-handedly increases power-play efficiency by 25% and kills penalties as well.

Zach Kassian is crazy. Darcy Tucker level of crazy. We just need to get him a Sean Avery shock collar and all will be fine :).

He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.
