If it’s Horton and another panther for a Bruin, it would have to be somebody with a decent cap hit (say $3.5 at the least). So who does that leave as a possibility?

That's just depressing

I wasn’t clamoring for him quite like some other comments I have heard but it makes sense in the end. We didn’t have the prospects or picks at the moment to make that happen (just like any potential Bobby Ryan trade), so i’m not too broken up. Come on Kabs, get us something good!

by Phaneuf's Rock Collection on Jun 22, 2010 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

with Niedermayer retiring, they might actually need him now

by badomen on Jun 22, 2010 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

We didn’t have the prospects or picks

Jeff Finger had a better +/- and much higher shot blocks per 60 than Dennis Wideman. Hell, if Kaberle really is on the block, why not flip him for Horton…?

I have nothing interesting to say.

by blurr1974 on Jun 22, 2010 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Perhaps it was the inclusion of the first rounder? They are trying to get a culture change in there, and Talon is a good drafter by looking at what he did in Chicago, so I could see him wanting to stock up for a proper re-build in the draft.

by Matt_Roberts on Jun 22, 2010 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Gotta give Chiarelli credit

So Phil Kessel, who had 55 points last year for $5.4MM, costs 2 high #1s and a #2, but Nathan Horton, who had 57 points last year for $4MM, costs a mid #1 plus an overpaid defenceman?

Oh well, I’m glad Ottawa doesn’t have Chiarelli.

Silver lining is the Bs REALLY need Kaberle now; Chara’s the only guy on their blue line with real offensive talent.

On the other hand, Bergeron Lucic Savard Horton Krejci Ryder Seguin Sturm. Goals unlikely to be a problem again for the Bs. And all for less than $5MM apiece.

If I were them I wouldn’t even qualify Wheeler.

I don’t get this from Florida’s perspective. Why trade for a D-man who is not as good, older, and makes almost as much? A #15 is rarely going to be as good as Horton. If they’re going young why not hold out for a prospect (Colborne) or better picks?

Kessel deal is about upside. If Kessel tops out at 55pts it’s going to be a long time before the Leafs are in the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Horton’s in his physical peak.

They made it to the SCF with an invisible Carter; Carter prefers playing center, but between Richards, Briere (who performs best as a center), and Giroux they have 3 scoring line centers, and they no doubt want a goalie upgrade but can’t afford it given pending contracts to Coburn and Hamhuis (likely).

Cause they’ve got one more year to make a run at the Cup before running into cap issues with Giroux and Gagne, and this post-season they proved that they don’t need Carter (7 points) to make it deep but they do need a good goalie in order to win. Their goalies gave them sub .900 goaltending this post-season; make that .910 and they’re the cup winners.

thomas

is not a bad goalie. I don’t know where that came from. He lost his job because Rask was slightly better and a LOT cheaper. That’s all. Tim Thomas is a very good NHL goalie.

But that’s not the reason this rumour is ridiculous. Philly’s been rumoured to be moving Carter for three years now, and every time, its for cap reasons, as a salary dump. Trading a $5M forward for a $5M goalie with a longer term helps them out of a cap crunch how, exactly?

this rumour is ridiculous.

I dont know if his goals will be INFLATED, but he might actually be able to get more than in Florida.

I think Savard needs better wingers, so he might do better than last year as well.

Savvy seems to do best with stars (Kovy, Hossa, Kessel), I don’t know if Horton belongs on that list or not. But he might.

He needed a PP Quarterback, and a goal scoring forward. I’m sure that there were other teams that were willing to offer $5 mil a year, but i think the Devils offering the NTC sealed the deal. Then he proceeded to suck because 1) he was playing center instead of on the wing, 2) Brent Sutter never used him as a top 6 forward, despite Dainus Zubrus being HORRIBLE despite playing with Elias and 3) you really can’t expect 30 goals out of a guy playing with Offensive powerhouses like Bobby Holik and Jay Pandolfo

by Ubiquitous on Jun 22, 2010 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

For doing what exactly….playing against teams that can’t even field a full squad of inferior players? A sport they’re considering dumping from the Olympics because outside of Canada and the US, no one really wants to fund the sport and so there are no other good teams.

I mean hell, if my kid dominates PeeWee, should we induct him into the HHoF because he’s much better than the other Pee Wee players and he may help the community care about PeeWee hockey at a better clip than once every 4 year or so?

If you want to argue that they grew hockey, put them in as a builder. But they weren’t put in as builders…they were put in as players, and they’re not up to snuff. Playing against pee wee players shouldn’t get you into the HHOF.

by Theodles on Jun 22, 2010 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t call them pee-wees but you make a good point that women’s hockey is just the US and Canada.

I should also point out that they were already in the International Hockey Hall of Fame, and the American Hockey Hall of Fame…. which is where they belong.

But leave women out of the HHOF or create a separate category.

by Theodles on Jun 22, 2010 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

A decent beer league team would handle the US or Canada Olympic women’s teams. They train with HS teams.

That to me just means it’s a separate category. With a limit of 4, women should not be taking places from the Gilmours of the world.

That said, James and Granato aren’t why Dougie didn’t get in; there was an unused spot.

Meanwhile Back in the Leafs Bunker ...

Brian Burke leans back in his chair and drums his fingers forcefully against the table. A strange sound breaks wind droning the eternally recycled air which improbably enough, brings to mind Harold and Yolanda’s love nest. Eyes rise from the Bruins logo right there on the fax sheet and meet within a Kaberlesque cacophony of "should he stay or should he go". "I didn’t do it" exclaims Poulin. Cliff looks the other way, somewhat vaguely. Burke leans forward and meets Nonis’ eyes square on like a panther trapping a portly bunny rabbit and sneers, in a more or less petulant but still infallibly masculine way: "Damn it Dave. I said TRUCULENCE!".

I would worry about $30MM over 6 years for a guy who is only good every other year.

It’s probably market value, but the Habs are now locked in for the foreseeable future. They can’t add any impact players. They have to hope the improvement of Ellers and Subban will outweight the age-induced deterioration of Gomez, Gionta, Markov, Spacek, Hamrlik, Gill, etc.

And we all know they were a mediocre team this year, post-season run notwithstanding.

Especially when you look at the induction of Jim Devellano

Sure he was the GM who drafted Yzerman, Lidstrom, and all the Russians who set up the Red Wings return to glory, but really when you get lucky and draft those guys in the later rounds…..

What’s funny is that on down the line Ken Holland will be inducted for all he’s done and Devellano is essentially getting inducted because of Holland’s success. I do not like his induction over Burns, not one bit.

Was Nieuwendyk ever the best player on his team? Arguably no. He led his team in scoring twice. Once by 4 points over Dougie, once because Modano missed 30 games in Dallas.

Dougie led his team 3 times, was the unquestioned leader of the Leafs, and in 92-93 was one of the best 3 players in the league. Not sure you could say any of that about Joe. Joe had 3 cups but played on better teams. Everything else points to Dougie.

That’s not a very consistent definition of the award, then.
I’m not really sure when Niewendyk won it, and there can be arguments made for some recepients, but you can’t say that every Conn Smythe winner on a Cup winning team only won it because of his team.
Patrick Roy, for example.

I was watching them with Brian Skrudland’s nephew, haha. We have em all taped. Joe was DOMINANT that year. There’s no question in my mind that Joe Niewendyk had the best all-around career of all the names being thrown around today. No disrespect intended to killer. There’s talk of Mats playing in the “dead puck era”. Joe won 2 cups in the dead puck era, with different teams.

I’m saying Nieuwendyk played on an awesome team and wouldn’t have otherwise been in a position to win the CS. Hull, Modano (who outpointed him), Belfour, Zubov, etc. etc. Dougie didn’t have the good luck to play on such a great team. Put him on a team like that and maybe he gets it instead. It’s a function of what team you’re on, not JUST how good you are.

I don’t know that it’s that clear for Gilmour. It seems like there’s not much separating the two…

Goals per game: Nieuwendyk 0.45 | Gilmour 0.31
Assists per game: Nieuwendyk 0.45 | Gilmour 0.65
Pts per game: Nieuwendyk 0.9 | Gilmour 0.96

Nieuwendyk scored 51 as a rookie and 51 in his second season. Gilmour only cracked 40 once.

Nieuwendyk was on four all star teams to Gilmour’s two.

Niewendyk took home more individual awards (Calder, Clancy and the Conn Smythe) to Gilmour’s Selke. I doubt there’s many Conn Smythe winners that aren’t in the HHOF.

I might give a slight advantage to Nieuwendyk, but it’s definitely close.

But the majority of canadians who are my age (in university in 2000) would have NO idea what a hanging chad is, nor would they know it’s relevance.

I know what a hanging chad is! It was a voting system where you punched out a hole in the card to make your vote and often it didn’t work.

I’m Canadian and I was 13 in 2000 too. Of course, I’m particularly interested in politics.

Vokoun is available, regardless of what Tallon tells the media. Sharks have some quality young NHL talent.

Dreger
No talk yet between Bruins and Leafs, with Wideman traded how long before Kaberle to Boston discussions start? Some say Savard is available.

I have nothing interesting to say.

Huh boy.

I can’t wait until the rumors taper off and the real trades happen.

Horton & Halak trades not enough for you? I’m surprised by the amount of trades before the draft.

Merciful God, let it be so. I can’t deal with any more Kaberle trade talk. It’s a part of the reason I haven’t been around much lately. Well, that, and new employment.

now you jinxed it...

Kaby isn’t going anywhere now, until the final week before his NTC is reactivated. haha. I think i would kill myself if that happened.

Savard signed a WAY below market value contract with an NTC to stay in Boston. There’s a 0.0000000000% chance he leaves the Bruins.

Kaby for Savy e5

Perhaps seeing into the future Savard took said discount in anticipation of a trade to Toronto?
