Kovulchuk……..my only fear is he turns into Yashin after getting a lifetime deal. But players like Ovechkin and Hossa haven’t become lazy so it might not be that much of a problem. If we can get him for a 6 mil cap hit (less than Phaneuf!!!)…..i’ll build a shrine for Burke.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Looking at next year since 1967
and I’ll help.
Kovulchuk in my mind (solely on play, not pay) would be a huge asset for the leafs. We need players like him.

Intros
We didn’t do one because when we started Chemmy pretended to be me and I pretended to be him calling everyone an asshole but could you guys use one?

well...
considering I had no clue who was even talking, sure. But I’m new around here, so I don’t know if everyone else needs an intro.

There’s something about the way Chemmy says, “box of hockey cards…a whole box.” that makes me stupidly happy.

On Kovalchuk:
Hell, call up Nazem Kadri, throw him on a line with Kovalchuk. Don’t worry kid, he’ll figure it out.

let's take a minute
kovalchuk-kadri-kessel
that’s like an epic K line right there.

Man this is really good. You guys should do it more often. I liked the high risk – high reward draft pick talk. And you pointed out that the Leafs don’t have a top six prospect pool. Thank you.

RE: Save v Risky pick
I would go with the risky pick. The Leafs don’t have many good prospects (good in the top 6 forward sense), while we have several players who could be solid 3rd liners (although none would be defensive studs).
If Kabanov does fall to the 2nd round (which he should), then I think Burke should make a play for a pick and draft him.
Also, is it just me, or does it seem like in the minds of GMs out there, there is actually a discrepancy between the 30th pick (a 1st rounder) and the 31st pick (2nd rounder)?

Kabanov…
How would Burke go about getting him, because as risky as he seems, I HIGHLY doubt that he’ll stick around till 62. I would think one of the teams with 2-3 first/second round picks would snatch him up.

On Kabanov
Craig Custance twittered this yesterday:
Asked a scout about Kirill Kabanov today and he said “he’s a full-time job for a sports psychologist.”
Bitter Leaf Fan: because sometimes there's no option but to be bitter...
Honestly, I would take him. If somehow Burke had a second and he was available, I would grab him.

Kabanov
Talk about a hard to track prospect. Just look at how Kabanov’s ranking fell:
Oct. 2009 – 4th (Woodlief’s redline report)
Oct. 2009 – drops from 4th to 9th (Central Scouting)
Nov. 2009 – 15th in North American mid-term rankings
Nov. 2009 – 4th (International Scouting Services)
Feb. 2010 – 7th (International Scouting Services)
April 2010 – drops out of top 30 (International Scouting Services)
May 2010 – drops out of top 10 in Woodlief’s redline report
Jun. 2010 – 11th among forwards (Central Scouting)
Jun. 2010 – drops out of top 30 in Woodlief’s redline report
Jun. 2010 – 31st among NA draft eligible players
Jun. 2010 – 43rd on Bob McKenzie’s final draft ranking

the thing with this...
is his drop in ranking due to his play, or is it due to the stuff outside of hockey?

Another complicating factor: part of it is an injury. I think he broke his wrist.

Ryan gets the credit for that one. He picked Kanye, Zappa and Grillionaire.

Speaking of distractions and Dion
Maybe the MLSE media types should help him get a grip on his social life… following up on Sean Avery’s relationships won’t work.

Instead of refusing to do the long-dated, front-loaded contracts
that Burke supposedly believes to be a loophole in the CBA because it goes against the “spirit” of the agreement, I’d much rather him prove a point by signing the most rediculously long, take-him-until-the-age-Gordie-Howe-played contract with the $5.25M cap hit.
Then we get a superstar, and you get your point across Burkey. Win-win. Also Leafs win, so Win-Win-Win.
