The Tomas Kaberle Showcase Showdown

If there's one thing Leafs fans can universally agree on, it's that Tomas Kaberle is likely to get traded in the next six weeks.

Some Leaf fans just want the trade done, some worry about the return (Modano and a 2nd?!?),  and others dream big dreams of Burke landing Bobby Ryan or some other completely unattainable, unrealistic, not-going-to-happen, why-are-you-even-wasting-our-time asset.

Now's your chance to go on the record and post a comment to predict what you think will happen with Tomas Kaberle: what team is Burke going to trade him to and what will the Leafs get in return?

The winner, or the person who comes the closest to getting this trade correct, gets a shout-out in PPP Podcast #9 (no guarantee that Ryan and I won't edit out any shout-out.)

We’ll get an underwhelming name (a mediocre fringe top 6, i.e. Clarkson) + prospect

OR

An overpaid big name that has had a bad season or isn’t living up to his contract (i.e. Ribiero)

I expect Eastern Conference. I truly do believe Burke wants to send Kaberle to a place he’ll want to play (as long as that place isn’t Toronto).

Agreed

I’ll throw my hat in the ring: Ribiero.

I'd far rather have Clarkson,

a prototypical Burke-type player, than that weasely Ribiero

Pretty sure

he’ll either resign, or get traded. If it’s traded, it’ll be to a Western Conference team, unless he’s moved to an Eastern team, in which case it would be the opposite. the return for said trade will probably be either a combination of or just one of picks, prospects and roster players.

I’m almost certain of that scenario

I have nothing interesting to say.

Im not gonna try and guess what Burke does or doesn’t do. I’m not gonan critique him as we don’t know what is offered.
All I’m gonna say is we need to temper our expectations. Carter and 1st days are LONG gone. If Kaberle gets traded for a 1st I will be bloody ecstatic. If he gets traded for a 23-26 year old top 6 player only, I will be ecstatic

From Puckdaddy (although im sure most of you have probably read this already)

“Speaking of players with no-trade clauses, according to CSN New England’s Joe Haggerty, Thomas’ teammate, Marc Savard(notes), would be open to waiving his for a deal to the Ottawa Senators, Chicago Blackhawks or Toronto Maple Leafs. The problem, as Haggerty points out, is that there’s no interest in Savard from any of those three teams”

Can i change my guess? haha

There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E"

by Matt_Roberts on Jun 25, 2010 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I could see Savard being a possibility. We think Boston was on Kaberle’s list two seasons ago. Kaberle would work well in Boston (although the idea of Chara/Kabby on the powerplay is moderately frightening). Bruins have a tonne of centres, and are needing cap space – Kabby for Savard would make sense.

by Blue and White Expat on Jun 25, 2010 2:58 PM EDT reply actions

Boston fans would be very unhappy with that one I believe.

another reason to do it?

Personally, I think people have finally gotten over the ‘Kessel won’t be good without Savard’ crap that was floating around all last year.

No thanks to Savard – he is one hit to the noggin away from being Brett Lindros.

Now they’re saying Kessel and Savard would be a dynamic duo and Kessel would be even better. ;)

by Theodles on Jun 25, 2010 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Their powerplay would be unstoppable for the first two months of the season, but after that, they would just keep a man on Chara at all times and it would drop to the bottom 10. That’s how ours has worked over the past few years (dating back to the good McCabe days).

Media/experts have said Kaberle will return more if he’s traded to an Eastern Conference team. Burke has said he wants a scoring winger, preferrably with size. Based on that info, I’d say he goes to Tampa Bay for Ryan Malone and some TB minor leaguer eating up salary and a 3rd round pick.

As for what’s likely to happen, I get a feeling he’s going to Nashville (Goc?) or to Philly in a complicated salary move that nets the Leafs Carcillo and Nodl.

I don’t possible see how Kabs could go to Chicago. They are still trying to unload salary, not take on 4.25 more.

Plus they have Campbell. I honestly cannot think why the two teams would be talking about Kaberle.

Now if it’s one of our prospects or something… that makes more sense.

I think Ladd will be up for a pretty decent raise after the Cup win, and we can do a lot better than a 15-goal scorer for Kaberle, regardless of the guy’s PK/defensive abilities – especially from a team as cap-tight as Chicago. There’d have to be a lot more involved in the deal.

You do mean Ladd + a pick or something, right?

excellent 3rd line player, can do everything

except kill penalties, play the power play or fight anyone besides Ryan Kesler. He’s a career 3rd liner who we will be sickened by if he is taking more than $1 million in salary 2 years from now. And he’ll want way more than that as a SC champion. And he’ll want 3 or 4 years minimum. He is a minor depth upgrade on what we have now and could probably play 2nd line on the current team.

BUT, by the season after next we would be looking for top level free agents and would be cursing that we had too much salary tied up in 3rd liners to offer 1st liners competitive money.

Problem is

the closer we get to August 15th, the more leverage that other teams will have on Burke.

If nothing happens at the trade deadline, figure things will be done by the time the last UFA ‘high profile’ defenceman gets signed.

All of a sudden, all of the D-men will be gone and those left holding the bag will scramble to trade for Kaberle.

Listened to an interview with a guy from Redline scouting – Cam Fowler dropped because he is soft. He won’t take a hit to make a play.

Amazing first pass/breakaway pass guy and his ceiling is 2nd defenceman, but the scout was not surprised he fell.

From 'LeafsForever'

Mogilny Quotes:

From Alexander Mogilny

On why it is hard to move Nik Antropov from the front of the net:
“He’s 7 feet tall and 400 pounds!”

Reporter: “Alex, what do say to all the fans parading up and down Yonge Street after your Game 7 win?’”
Almo: “Get a life.”

Regarding Santa Claus, who was nothing more than a mysterious legend to kids who grew up in the old communist system:
“Does he live in the north? I don’t know where the hell he lives, really. They never told us. Maybe he’s in one of those government project buildings. But he comes from somewhere.”

Alex Mogilny suspects the fat man’s (Santa) movements were rigidly controlled by authorities in the old Soviet Union.
“You put presents under the tree and hopefully, by the time you (sober) up the next evening, something is still there,” Mogilny said.

When asked how he was going to spend his time during the Christmas holiday, Mogilny replied "Get pissed"

Re: Gary Roberts Protein Shakes
"I don’t know what’s in them and I don’t want to know," said Mogilny, “All I know is I don’t want to be 40 years old and be growing a second head.”

On the face shield:
“I can wear it one day, then not wear it the next day. It’s like a pair of glasses, some days I wear it, some days I don’t. I’m not wearing any underwear either. There is no reason.”

On a ref giving him the gate after he yelled at them:
“He didn’t have to throw me out. He hears those words all the time.”

"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."

it wouldn’t shock me if Burke trades Kabs for Anaheim for their two first. Don’t know if I’ll like this but they would probably trade one and pick with the other. I don’t think this draft is all that deep when you consider how many teams are taking about how their pick is available…

Have fun everyone.

And if he is traded by the time I get home, good luck Kabby – no hard feelings, feel free to re-sign with us in the offseason for 4.5 per for 3 years.

by sodonis on Jun 25, 2010 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Kovalchuk ends up in Colorado to be honest with you. That would be a sick team. They have the cap space too, but a lot of RFAs that need to be signed to some good deals or traded.

I thought that was what Tavares was supposed to be.

by JoshuaDPreston on Jun 25, 2010 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

can they wait for tavares? he needs to pull a Stamkos this year for the islanders to benefit. Kovalchuk is a bonafide superstar. i guess I’m wrong and they should lock up their young talent. However Charles Wang is certified insane and i just see Kovalchuk in an isles uni.

by sodonis on Jun 25, 2010 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I think they can wait for Tavares. They’re about 1decent goaltender away from a playoff run. That and I think it’s a real hard sell to get Kovalchuk to LI.

by JoshuaDPreston on Jun 25, 2010 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

you dont think Kovalchuk would love the Hamptons?

by sodonis on Jun 25, 2010 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha, I think that he would love it, I just find it hard to sell him being on the team, especially with all of the rumors of movement. He would love the Hamptons, but I think he would hate Kansas city if that is to be believed at all. I personally don’t buy those rumors.

by sodonis on Jun 25, 2010 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh, no worries, I’m not judging you for it or anything. I honestly do think it would be a fairly smart move for the Islanders, so long as they can lock up their young core and get a consistent, younger goaltender as well. It makes more sense as far as hunches than stuff you read on HFboards or anything. Haha.

by JoshuaDPreston on Jun 25, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

by nhlcheapshot on Jun 25, 2010 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Kabs seems to love TO. If no trade happens (which is possible) I’m thinking he’ll resign another reasonably sweetheart deal.

The only question will be whether he gets a NTC. Yes, I know, Burke hates them, but Kabs can’t take too much of a hometown discount without one. Think about it. If you are Kaberle maybe you are willing to play for 5M, but to stay in Toronto you’d take 3M (just making numbers up). If you sign for 3 but without a NTC, you are now an incredibly valuable trade commodity due to your underpriced contract, and Burke is going to be offered something he can’t refuse for you at some point… Then you are stuck playing for 3M in Long Island (or wherever), possibly with a fair bit of term… so you are now playing for way under your market value – and the only reason you took that pay cut was because it would keep you in TO, and you don’t get that benefit.

So the question isn’t “am I against NTC’s”, the question is, how much of a discount would Kabs have to give me to make it worth giving him the NTC.
