Mike van Ryn to sit out 2010-2011 season

Toronto Marlies just tweeted: "The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Wednesday that defenceman Mike Van Ryn has elected not to play in the 2010-11 hockey season."

Too bad for Mikey. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking he was a very nice return in McCabe's salary dump. Just beset by injuries.

At 31 years old, and after not playing for TWO entire seasons, I wonder if his career has to be over at this point.

Mike Van Ryn

#26 / Defenseman / Toronto Maple Leafs

Height: 6-1

Weight: 198

Born: May 14, 1979

Brutal News

Two seasons out is a long time. I wonder if he won’t catch on somewhere in Europe after Christmas (or the Spengler Cup team) to get some ice.

Or

AHL contract with the Marlies? Do those count towards our SPC limit?

Yes

I've always wanted to be a PPP Princess. You see kids, you can be anything you want to be; so long as Jay Leno doesn't also want to be that.

I think he can sign specifically just with the Marlies. Would that count?

That's

What I’m wondering. I’m thinking Chelios’ contract which he signed with the Wolves specifically.

Then he could still stay under the watchful eye of Leafs management without taking up a valuable spot.

I was really looking forward to MVR coming back and being our 6thD man next year, and getting enough games to make his pension. Best of luck to him.

Damn. I was glad when we got him in the McCabe deal because the dude could play and he went to my high school. Hopefully he rebounds and makes it back to The Show.
