CHI’s 2nd round pick in 2007, from HF
Talent Analysis
Sweatt has unbelievable speed, but what sets him apart is his ability to make plays at high speeds. He also has great acceleration. Sweatt possesses great hands and is smart in his decisions with the puck. Rarely can he be found turning the puck over. Sweatt’s superb defensive play and awareness is one area that has progressed quite nicely this season, and has made him an effective penalty killer. Sweatt also possesses excellent on-ice vision and has a keen sense of being able to find open spaces and knowing where the play is going to end up. While Sweatt has all of the necessary tools for future success, adding size and strength to his 6’0" frame will be essential to his pursuit of achieving that success.

Colorado College head coach Scott Owens’ comments on Sweatt: "We’ve been very impressed with Billy’s overall performance. His overall speed and ability to open things up were such that they were obvious from day one. Sometimes Billy goes so fast that it’s hard for guys to stay up with him. He has a very good team game concept and we feel confident with him in all areas. He’s been really good for us."

Future
Sweatt possesses all of the skills and intangibles needed to be a top-six forward at the next level.

Honestly, when they’re cross-conference like this, I have no problem if DiDo turns out to be a solid second liner.

by Bower Power on Jun 30, 2010 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

you’re right.

upon further reflection (ie 3 more minutes after my first 30 second reflection) i really like this trade. this is good for toronto now (when we need it), and good for chicago in a couple of years (when they may need it).

Yesterday is dead, but not my memory.

Excellent.

WWGRD? (What Would Gary Roberts Do?)

by PassivelyTruculent on Jun 30, 2010 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

I seriously DID NOT think we were going to get in on the Chicago action. The only guy im sad about losing is DiDom.

A point of worry: Chicago was STACKED, how good will Versteeg be when he’s higher up on the depth chart (hence higher up on the opposition’s list of guys to cover).

A point of happiness: KRIS VERSTEEG and what seems to be a damn good prospect for one damn good prospect an 3rd liners!!!!!!!!!

Anyone got Versteeg’s QualCom / QualTeam etc. so we can rack up 1,000 posts analyzing this?

by samspade on Jun 30, 2010 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

Versteeg only averaged 15:44 on the Hawks last season. Kessel was playing over 19! Versteeg’s numbers were lower in part two a deep team.

Versteeg is an RFA when his deal expires. Amazing,

by hkycntrc on Jun 30, 2010 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

Versteeg has never played more than 17 minutes/game in his career. He’s kind of like Kessel in this way – he should be able to step it up this year.

Loving the Leafs is like being in love with a drug-addled, gambling addicted prostitute with a heart of gold and a bunch of humanitarian awards from her youth. It’s hard. It hurts. But dammit! I just love them!

by Van Ryn's Neurologist on Jun 30, 2010 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

Versteeg had the 6th highest QCOMP on CHI and the worst QCOMP yet managedto put up 44 points playing largely a third line roll.

What can he do with top 6 minutes and a line mate like Kessel…?

I have nothing interesting to say.

You mean worst QTEAM right? Also, the stacked-ness of Chicago does make me worry that a bunch of players look better than they are because no-one can properly defend against their depth (i.e. the whole is more than the sum of its parts a la Byfuglien).
