Leafs Acquire Kris Versteeg

Brian Burke has added a top six forward. Versteeg is a 20 goal guy who will look good wearing the blue and white. I know a lot of people here like Viktor Stalberg but Stalberg is actually older than Versteeg. I'll be sad to see Chris DiDomenico leave but there's a fair chance with his femur injury he'll never skate fast enough to dominate in the NHL. Phillippe Paradis is a garbage prospect.

Best of luck to the three players leaving Toronto tonight but remember the adage we all learned when we got Gilmour: you win the trade when you get the best player. We got the best player.

Wow. Fantastic move by Burke, here. Really glad to see Versteeg out of the division; him turning Hamhuis and Klein into pylons was getting old.

Very shifty/slick player. Much stronger on the puck than you’d think for such a little guy. Definitely top six material, as Chemmy notes. 30 goal ceiling, I’d guess.

Hawks fans were happy to see Versteeg go, apart from me. He should get the top 6 minutes he likely wouldn’t be getting in Chicago, and I think he can develop decent chemistry with Kessel. Stickhandles a bit too much at times, but in my opinion the only better passer on the Hawks was Kane.

Most importantly, I can’t wait to see what Bloge Salming does with this.

Passing

People call him Kane Lite sometimes. Has a tendency to be too cute but can blow your mind with his stickhandling.

Just watch out for his utter inability to dump the puck when you want him to, though. Steeger not dumping the puck has become a truism on SCH.

In 08-09, Versteeg played on the 2nd line and averaged 17+ minutes. He scored 53 points. This season he was dropped to the third line with the arrival of Hossa. Played 15:44 per game and scored 44 with Ladd and Madden as linemates.

So much for going after Kovy. Looks like this and whoever we get for Kabs will be it.

Looks like Versteeg is likely to be the best player in the deal, and I like trading quantity for quality. I do fear though that this means we are locked into solid second line types without any marquee, elite difference makers.

Watched Versteeg play extensively in junior...

Was very very poor defensively, and Brent Sutter stuck him in various power play and penalty kill situations. By the end of his junior career, he was a fine two-way forward. He responds very well to being coached, and is young enough that he can still get better. He is one of the players I was hoping would end up in a Leafs uniform!

Might help with PK2 – he was 7th among Hawks forwards in SH/TOI.

God, BB is one crafty fellow.

Kris Versteeg.

Not sad to see Paradis go, although I was really looking forward to DiDomenico. As for Stalberg, we were projecting him to be a good third liner. Meh.

Another point: The Leafs have too many RFA’s after next season. Schenn, Gunnarsson, Caputi, Sjostrom, and we used to have Stalberg. This Versteeg deal goes at least a little ways to helping our cap crunch coming up.

10 AM makes a lot of sense. Burke will be off the podium and out of the room by 10:30ish.

UFA season opens at noon.

BTW, I’ve always found it odd that the Leafs announce things at 3PM. Nobody in the industry holds a newser that late in the day – the idea is to get it out for the early news cycles and give the media time to file for their afternoon deadlines.

Pevans might have a slightly different take on this (or any other media members out there).

And I’m still not crushed either way… the more guys we have that are better than Kulemin the happier I’ll be… I just want to keep Kulemin.

If we sign him for less than $2.5 million that’s awesome… I don’t think we will, and I’m willing to see him sign for more… but hey I want the team to win just as much as the rest of you.

According to Behind-the-Net’s numbers, Versteeg played against middling competition with crappy linemates last season.

This is where Versteeg ranked amongst Chicago forwards last season in terms of quality of competition and quality of teammates (minimum 30 games):

QualCOMP: 6th of 13
Corsi REL QoC: 8th of 13

QualTeam: 13th of 13
Corsi REL QoT: 12th of 13

His two most frequent linemates at even-strength where Byfuglien (-1.00) and Madden (-0.99), the two worst rated forwards on the team.

by Slava Duris #24 on Jun 30, 2010 11:38 PM EDT reply actions

I was reading some tweets that were saying Versteeg is decent on the PK… never hurts to have that. Even though our PK massively improved in the latter half of the season, still lots of work to be done.

In those few years that the jury is out, Kessel has already put up a 30 goal season and will probably repeat that again and again. Meanwhile, Seguin and Knight haven’t done shit at the NHL level and probably won’t for 1 and 2-3 years respectively.

Steal methinks.

I wouldn’t call it that at all.

Had to give up prospects to get him… but ya, Chicago was still in a bind cap-wise and we were able to use that to get a roster player.

He wasn’t free, but it’s about time we put our middling prospects to work to make ourselves better.

I don’t really think Chicago lost here… they got some good prospects for a player that was one of 2 or 3 that had to go because of the cap.

You don’t need 23 men in the NHL though. You only need to fill out a line-up of 18 skaters and 2 goalies. But most teams carry 2-3 extras to play minor minutes and shuffle out players who are struggling but are generally fixtures in the line-up.

Oh and in regards to him being a 20 goal guy

His numbers dipped a bit this season when his minutes dropped back down after the Hawks acquired Hossa…

on a team like the Leafs he’ll have WAY more opportunity to score playing more consistent top line minutes.

Versteeg unfortunately is a RW though, so he and Kessel are unlikely to play on the same line… Kulemin-Bozak-Kessel probably plays together still methinks.

Ya that was me

I understand why people do it… in terms of looking at trades as asset management comparisons… but really it’s silly.

If we traded Kaberle straight up for a 6th rounder tomorrow, would it be good asset management since he was originally a 7th round pick? No.

And that’s a fair point, certainly. But at the root of it, great drafting in the later rounds (maybe the only good thing we got from JFJ) can give us the opportunity to make deals like this. I’m not saying that Stalberg is only worth a 6th, but that’s all it cost us to get him. And now we’ve packaged that for a potential top-6 forward. This is how good organizations build.

by CarlPeelash on Jul 3, 2010 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Trouble is, he was also in charge of managing assets.

As a Toronto sports fan I proudly follow the lessons of lachrymology.

by Redonred on Jul 1, 2010 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Hate to burst some bubbles but I doubt we’re a legit contender even if we do add Kovalchuk (yuck) and/or Savard for next year. No contender has a third line of Grabbo – Kadri – Hanson…or at least not at this point in their respective careers.

This is a great trade. We’re instantly better, and arguably a playoff team, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves or we’ll end up rationalizing all the lame-ass “plan the parade!!11” comments from Leaf-haters on the TSN boards.

I have full faith in Burke and could reasonably see our team competing for a Stanley Cup in 2-3 years time, but patience is still a virtue.

And I repeat…Kovalchuk….yuck. Trust me, we don’t need him.

Looking forward to watching Versteeg!

If you read Grabbo's

detailed stats, i.e. Corsi, +/- on and off ice, giveaways vs. takeaways, GVT, penalties drawn vs. taken etc. I would sincerely hope you’d consider changing that perspective. He’s actually under-rated frankly, and his numbers last year had a lot to do with his wrist injury.

Let me just say

I was in Chicago twice this past year… once in early September 2009 for the labour day weekend, and then the day after the Stanley Cup parade… the number of ‘Hawks fans that crawled out of the woodwork was absolutely ridiculous. The city itself had little to no ’hawks presence noticeable at the start of the year aside from one news bit I saw that made use of Versteeg and Ladd… the Pat Kane vs Cab Driver thing wasn’t even a big deal at that point.

Come back in June, and suddenly the Hawks are EVERYWHERE. It’s a bit hilarious frankly. Completely different feel from Toronto where the Leafs stuff is going ALL the time whether or not we win.

You're putting a pretty bad spin on this

I don’t even want to get into the discussion about our fanbase, I already have nightmares after trying to debate it with a couple guys on BSH (who represented their blog badly).

But if you’d bothered to read the thread with a level head, you’d realize we were saying that given the cap situation, there was no way we could hang onto that kind of talent on our third line. Somebody had to go so we could keep our core, and that was Versteeg.

by VerStig on Jul 1, 2010 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

i don't think you'll find ANYONE at SCH

who thinks we lost “nothing” with Versteeg. We know what we lost, he’s a great player who we see as only getting better. we just knew we couldn’t keep him.

When you have

Kane, Toews, Hossa, as your top 3 wingers… and Brouwer and Sharp in the middle? Versteeg is easily your 4th best winger, and because Byfuglien was playing up front regularly, Versteeg drops down a peg… really I don’t think this is an issue anymore in Toronto.

He’s in Toronto’s top 4 scoring forwards at a minimum… he’ll produce more in Toronto.

ah, i see now

well as far as Versteeg being a 3rd liner — it’s just that we’re way too deep at forward. that’s not me gloating, it’s just what we knew going into the offseason. What we don’t have depth at (in the minors esp) and need to keep are centers and d-men. And while versteeg CAN center, i never thought he was the best at it.

I do however think that his being on the hawks has stunted his development a bit, b/c we’ve had a lot of other go-to guys, and he just wasn’t getting the minutes he’d be getting on most other teams. He does have his brain-fart moments taht made us tear our hair out, but then followed it up with something brilliant. quite the emotional rollercoaster. With more minutes, I expect his play to improve.

Actually we don't.

All this crap around Kovalchuk being necessary to improve the offense is bogus.

The Leafs need defensive improvements way more than offensive (despite the crappy production last year).

A full year of Kessel + Versteeg + Kulemin + Bozak + Grabovski playing up front should improve things enough that we get enough goals. As for the D, if we get better goaltending, a year of Phaneuf should help out there too.

I think we’ll be just fine and in the hunt come playoff time, without any major changes.

Vet presence... is an interesting concept.

Since we’re clearly not contending for the cup next season (regardless of offseason acquisitions), I think it’s too early to add in Vets.

If we get to the point next offseason where we want to make a push, then bringing in a vet presence and adding 1 extra piece is how you do it.

Burke looks to be buliding a good young core of players that can grow together and hopefully contend for a Cup in the next 5 years or so.

If you look at the ages of our key guys:

Kessel (22), Bozak (24), Versteeg (24), Kadri (19), Kulemin – maybe? (23), Phaneuf (25), Schenn (20), Gunnarsson (23), Gustavsson (25), Komisarek (28)

If the Leafs want 245 goals scored next year, and their top 6 forwards score 56-60%, we only need them to produce 137-147 goals. We don’t need another 45 goal scorer, we need a 20-25 goal scorer realistically.

Versteeg is a fucking stud – you guys will love him.

He’s a little dude, but it absolutely fearless. He’s not afraid to drop the gloves in aid of a team mate and wins puck battles against guys much bigger.

He’s an excellent passer, has a deceptive shot, and can play on either wing and center. His one weakness is the occasional brain fart, but he’s 24.

He’ll do well in Toronto. He was on a checking line all year in Chicago and still managed 20 goals…

There’s a lot of upside to Versteeg and the negative stuff will pass with experience. Kessel now has someone who can feed him the puck.

On Chicago; Kane is the playmaking mastermind, but talent like that doesn’t come around often. Versteeg is probably the next best when it comes to playmaking, but there is a log-jam of talented RW on the Hawks and someone not named ‘Kane’ or ‘Hossa’ had to go.

He should be a 30 goal scorer for you guys if he gets top 6 time and is on the top PP. On the PK, Versteeg is also a huge scoring threat…and that’s always fun to watch.

well fine, on the PP the two of them should be great. But in normal play, Versteeg will most likely be on the second line.

It sure is amazing that you guys could hoodwink the Bowman's again!

You guys will love versteeg , he is quick, can playmake and score 25-30 goals for you. Bravo! But, I think we did pretty good against you guys in these 2 trades(hayes also) It is amazing how much all of you LOVED these prospects when YOU owned them. Funny stuff!
My gut feeling is we made a great trade an the future will bear it out.

by Daniel Mc Ginnity on Jul 1, 2010 2:21 AM EDT reply actions

Hayes was a decent prospect, but I’m glad if we dealt him he got united with his brother. I’m pretty happy with the player Burke picked with the acquired pick, so its prospect-in/prospect-out. No biggie.

Don’t get all this happiness wrong – lots of Leaf fans loves Stalberg, just that he needed more time to find a scoring touch. Big body, ultra-fast… but couldn’t find the back of the net to save his life. He really was a bit different after Volchenkov knocked him the fuck out.

DiDom is a really nice story of perceverence. I really hoped to see him in the Marlies next year.

But getting a decent 2nd (or in our case, at least temporarily, possibly 1st line winger) at 24 years old (younger than Stalberg) is a big coup for an offense-starved team.

Tick Tock, Tomas. Tick Tock.

Everyone has high hopes for their prospects until they are gone. And then you see the reality more readily. I think Stalberg will be great and will come close to replacing what you guys lost in Versteeg but a broken femur is hard to recover from and having seen Paradis play he was not good.

Chicago will like what it sees

from Hayes and Stalberg… both are big bodies who can skate well and have potential. Both also need some serious polish before I’d call them top 6 regulars by any means. DiDomenico is a solid player all around, though his broken femur might make you wonder when he’ll arrive. Paradis is a banger, but he hasn’t done much offensively to warrant much NHL attention yet. Chicago got a lot out of both deals agreed.

That being said, the Leafs picked up a top 6 forward NOW in Versteeg, a top college prospect of their own in the 2nd round pick Sweatt, and an irritating player with offensive upside in the draft who played on one of the top lines in the WHL in Ross with the 43rd draft pick (another 2nd rounder). Overall I’m not sure you can say yet who got the best of both deals, but next year Versteeg will have the largest impact.

Luckily in Chicago, you have Kane, Toews, Sharp, and Hossa to carry the load going forward so the kids can develop at a more even pace. You’ll be happy with them overall in all likelihood.

by nhlcheapshot on Jul 1, 2010 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Wtf?

Stempniak had one good season with 27 goals prior to the Leafs obtaining him… and he never came close to winning a cup … Versteeg has won a cup and despite never scoring 27 goals, he’s scored 20 twice now.

Then there’s Sweatt:

Bill Sweatt, Left Wing (2nd round pick, 2007)

Sweatt is a six-foot tall dynamo while he is on the ice. He was making plays from every angle, starting odd-man rushes, playing aggressive defense, and passing with a deft touch that inspired oohs and ahs from the crowd.

During his 104 game career at Colorado College, Bill has scored 31 goals, added 45 assists, and played a very up-tempo game that impressed scouts throughout the league.

He stood out primarily for one play, during which he found himself on his knees about 15 feet from the net. With guys pummeling his body with stick blades and elbows, Sweatt had the ability to read the play, and knock out a near one timer from his knees that nearly resulted in a goal. It’s that kind of no-quit attitude that he brings to the table, and the Hawks should take a long, serious look at him.

Thanks for the Troll comment that was constructive!

Versteeg had better players to play with than Stempniak. That’s it. Sharp and Toews are quite a bit better than anyone the Leafs had/have. I didn’t care for Stempniak but I don’t see the excitement about Versteeg or Armstrong. They are average players (3rd line players) and they aren’t going to win you the cup. Last time I checked that was the idea. Furthermore, trading away prospects…history appears to be repeating itself (not that I was sold on any of them). With prospects you save money for a legit 1st line player and don’t have to overpay for average guys like they just did. Has Burke caught the JFJ flu? It’s possible.

by BillBerg4PM on Jul 2, 2010 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

versteeg didnt play with Kane or Toews
he played with terrible 3rd line players who cant score and that made his assist totals low
he scored 20 goals with NO help on the back of his own ability and drive
this is nothing Like the damage JFJ did

You may be taking Jared a little too seriously

by JaredFromLondon on Jul 2, 2010 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

the “prospects” they traded away were stalberg, paradis, and didomenico.

versteeg is younger than stalberg and already has two 20 goal season. stalberg couldnt find his scoring touch yet and also got rocked and never looked the same after his shoulder injury/concussion.
paradis is a less than ppg player in the Q, was an off-the-board jump to be a 1st round pick in his draft year (i think most had him mid second round).
didomenico shattered his femur and the potential long term impact from that is still unknown.

if you read the comments, you’ll see also that versteeg played moslty on the 3rd line with byfuglien and madden/ladd – some of the “worst” blackhawks in terms of teammate point production.
i believe many players on the leafs (especially the ones he’s likely to play with) rated higher than them. he did not play with Kane/Sharp/Toews for very much of the season especially after Hossa’s return. yet still managed 44 pts with an average of 15 min of ice time. Plus, Chicago fans have said he’s the second slickest passer on the team behind Kane.

These all add up to the reality that we got the best pplayer in the deal by a long shot, with CHicago getting some needed cap relief, getting some value out of a 1st/2nd line player who they didnt have rooom for in their top 6, and they got some long term development hopes for didom & paradis – both of who will likely project to being 3rd liners.

this is not rask for raycroft or boyes for nolan.

by Death_By_Leafs on Jul 2, 2010 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Constructive?

Stempniak did ok the first season he was here, than did nothing last year.

For some reason he went on a tear with Phoenix and had a completely unsustainable shooting percentage

Also, he disappeared in the playoffs.

Versteeg – for a third line guy – had 14 points in the playoffs.

Opinions are welcome, try to validate them with actual facts next time and you won’t be called a troll.
