I'm gonna keep this short and sweet as I need to get to bed here soon. Why you ask? Well because as of 8am this morning I will be taking the Medical College Admission Test. That's right, I want to go to medical school and become a doctor. Freaky shit right?

probably in the minor here but i’m happy for the koivu signing. ok, it’s lots of money but i think there are way less deserving people in nhl making same or little more.

Per capgeek, a full NMC too. I’m not sure I would say it’s an overpayment, but I don’t think it’s an underpayment warranting an NMC, either.
Interesting they seem intent on locking up a team that finished 22nd last year and isn’t particularly young. They have no cap space next year for significant additions either.
by The '67 Sound on Jul 16, 2010 8:10 AM EDT up reply actions
You know, if I was getting what could be deemed as a “large contract” i’d want a NMC too, prevents anyone speculating from “dumping him in the minors”.

I’d want it, but do you give them out? It’s amazing how frequently these are doled out, and not just by JFJ.
And with a smaller market team like Minnesota, is there really a danger of dumping in the minors? That could only happen after a trade, and a NTC protects against that.
It’s just giving an awfully big hammer to a very good player but probably not one of the 15 best forwards in the NHL.

Bruentte is a pretty solid winger

Out of the 61 points he’s got last year, 42 are also Koivu’s. This doesn’t necessarily reflect poorly on him per se but it’s a number so it must be useful to the discussion.

As far as the $500 K signing of Meech goes
I’m pretty sure they didn’t “prefer” him over Lebda, and I’m guessing if Lebda had been willing to sign for $500 K they’d have kept him.
The idea that they’d want to hold on to a prospect that has yet to crack their line up full time over a guy that’s played over 300 NHL games and won a Stanley Cup with them is a bit ridiculous… especially if they cost the same amount.
Also… Derek Meech has been trying to crack the Wings line up for 4 years, and he has played a total of 126 games… he has recorded 16 points in 126 games. He is not remotely serviceable from an offensive perspective… hence he is not the replacement for Brett Lebda on the Wings blue line.
"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Leafs.
The point is they prefer Meech at $500K to Lebda at $1.45MM.
Detroit were smart enough to use Lebda when he was cheap and cut bait once he wasn’t.

If I had a limited amount of money to spend, and bronze would get the job done, quite possibly.
Like everything else in life its cost/value.
IMHO peoples problem with Lebda is his cost/value.
I think the better question would be: (note I have NO IDEA the actual value of these metals):
“Would you rather have gold at $10 000/lb or bronze at $100/lb?” (again don’t crucify me if my values are way off)
I think he means the wings in this case, prefers the bronze but not at the price as if its gold or at price that it should be gold but its not.

Calm down, I’m not implying omniscience. All I’m saying is it seems unlikely he “didn’t want to play there behind everybody” since he’ll be playing behind more guys here. Obviously none of us are inside his head, all we have are the facts and logical inferences to be drawn from them.
I don’t think it’s a logical inference that he came here because of all the guys he was behind in Detroit. I think the more logical inference is he came here because we offered a lot more money. Is that really even controversial?
by The '67 Sound on Jul 16, 2010 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions
Your point was that Detroit didn’t want to keep him. We don’t know anything about what Detroit wanted.

Actually, we do know something. We know they didn’t sign him. We can draw a series of logical inferences from that, including that they didn’t think he was worth $1.45MM when they could pay Meech $500K.
Or we could look at that Wings’ fan’s twitter feed from after the signing.

Then we have to assume he’s made an odd choice. Play as 5/6 D for a perennial winner or move to 29th place team and be somewhere between 6 and 8 on the depth chart.

Who knows how much Detroit would have paid him. Maybe they would have gone to 1.2 Million for all we know. And maybe someone else offered even more than us and he thought "y’know, I think I’d like Toronto and Burke, and the money is still way better than I’m used to. And even with a NMC clause, 3M still isn’t enough to live in Edmonton…

No, actually I’m not talking about Holland being willing to pay him.
Lebda’s situation is much like mine was 2 years ago at work. I loved the work, I really liked most of the people I worked with, but I knew I could do more and make more elsewhere. When that opportunity came up, my boss was sad to see me go, but she knew that I was being given a shot that I wasn’t going to get where I currently worked, and along with that shot was more salary.

said the Leafs were getting a good player, and said he’d do well in their system.
He never said anything about not matching the contract, or anything of that ilk. And he probably never will, so saying he REFUSED to match as if he said that is just as ridiculous as anyone saying he DID match.
Nobody knows what he offered Lebda other than he and Lebda, and anyone Lebda or Holland have told… but they haven’t told us.

Yeah, you try writing academic stuff like that, you are going to get beaten up hard. Appropriate hedging is a sign that you aren’t trying to appropriate other peolpe’s ideas, and know what there is evidence for, and what is just supposition.
In reality, a balance is probably better. Sometimes it’s good to flag that something is just an opinion, other times is should be clear.
That's not a logical inference
Because you have no idea if Lebda wanted to go back to Detroit for the exact same dollar amount.
Let’s face it, Detroit is a worse city than Toronto (I’m biased… but seriously)…
Also – Lebda might just want a change of scenery.
Saying that Detroit didn’t offer him a contract isn’t fair or realistic and they won’t discuss it openly… so we’ll probably not know anytime soon.

To say that the odds of the Canuks winning are only twice as good as Montreal or Calgary…
the better question is when are we starting a collection and putting down some pooled money.

Frolov
A name that is occasionally brought up, but almost immediately dismissed due to his perceived high asking price and only-shows-up-when-he-feels-like-it-ness.
Ignoring that for a second, he is 28, fairly talented, and is clearly out of the spotlight as he could be considered Kovy super-light.
He earned $2.9M cap hit for the last 5 years ($4M in salary last year).
At what price point does he become a serious option to consider? $3.5M? $4M? $4.5M? There are rumours he’s asking for $5M, likely multi-year.
Points per game the last 5 years:
05/06 – 21G, 54P in 69GP (0.78 PPG)
06/07 – 35G, 71P in 82GP (0.87 PPG)
07/08 – 23G, 67P in 71GP (0.94 PPG)
08/09 – 32G, 59P in 77GP (0.77 PPG)
09/10 – 19G, 51P in 81GP (0.63 PPG)
He is also the correct position (LW) that Burke seems to be looking for, 6’2" 202 lbs (although I don’t think he uses his body that often). Not sure about his intangibles though.
I imagine there is no way he signs anywhere before Kovy picks a destination though, as any team who misses out on Kovalchuk might look to Frolov as one of the next best options, and you gotta figure his agent knows that and will probably get a bigger payday for waiting.

Steadily declining point production. He would need to be on a 1 or 2 year deal, and I’d really only burn up to 3-3.5 tops. No way he’s looking for a contract like that, but I’d rather we look for someone who’s either A) considerably younger / pre-prime, or B) someone who at least isn’t on a downswing in point production. Overall, not interested.
A) considerably younger / pre-prime
Fair enough, that’s what every fan/team wants.
But let’s think logically here – short of a miracle trade of Kaberle for Neal or Setoguchi, is it even possible to get a young dynamic top 6 forward?
Frolov would cost no assets, and we could still deal Kaberle for picks/prospect.
or B) someone who at least isn’t on a downswing in point production.
Again, good luck – sometimes players on the outs or who have had bad seasons are good players who are available simply because they had a bad season (i.e. Phaneuf, although a different scenario there)
Not necessarily leading the charge for Frolov here, but i’d say he should be up for consideration once the Kovalchuk “sweepstakes/cap cripplement” finishes.

declining minutes also don’t forget.
He played less when more skill came into the fold. His role and PP time decreased… he wasn’t the go to guy, thus his production dipped.
Not shocking. Unfortunately Toronto doesn’t have a lot of other options, his numbers could quite easily rebound in T.O.

But it’s kind of a “which came first” scenario. Did his minutes decline because his production/production rate declined, or did his production decline because of his minutes? For a guy likely in his physical prime, I’m not sure I want to take a flyer on him if that question can’t be quickly/easily/definitively answered – let alone a multi-year deal.
I don't think you can blame Frolov
for the Kings adding more adequate pieces to the puzzle.
When they brought in Smyth, his minutes nosedived, as did his production. Here’s how he compares with the other top LW (Dustin Brown) on the Kings since the lockout:
05-06: Frolov ESP/15mins (0.639) – PPP/5mins (0.197), Brown ESP/15mins (0.333) – PPP/5mins (0.199)
06-07: Frolov ESP/15mins (0.525) – PPP/5mins (0.381), Brown ESP/15mins (0.293) – PPP/5mins (0.419)
07-08: Frolov ESP/15mins (0.692) – PPP/5mins (0.350), Brown ESP/15mins (0.446) – PPP/5mins (0.379)
08-09: Frolov ESP/15mins (0.442) – PPP/5mins (0.479), Brown ESP/15mins (0.465) – PPP/5mins (0.305)
09-10: Frolov ESP/15mins (0.476) – PPP/5mins (0.351), Brown ESP/15mins (0.486) – PPP/5mins (0.326)
Then they also brought in Smyth this past season who performed as follows:
09-10: Smyth ESP/15mins (0.429) – PPP/5mins (0.455)
So let’s see, yes this past year he was outperformed by both Smyth and Brown … likely in large part because they had better line mates when they were in the game generally speaking. Smyth’s QTEAM was .114, Brown’s was .097, Frolov’s was .049. If you look at his zone start numbers, Smyth and Modin were very sheltered at LW, while Frolov and Brown were taking defensive zone draws.
Prior to this past season though, Frolov was consistently on par with, if not superior to Dustin Brown, and for the first 3 years post-lockout, he was a superior LW to Brown. Brown’s playing on the top line now, and Frolov has been demoted, but it isn’t for lack of talent. Quite the contrary, it’s been spun as a poor attitude situation, when in reality it’s just the team going in a different direction with different players. Brown is more physical, and he’s developed into a solid Power Forward type, the skill up front on the top line is provided by Kopitar and Williams (when healthy), and frankly the need for another skill player isn’t as large. Smyth is a LW so Frolov is demoted to line 3 by default… that isn’t HIS fault. He isn’t a power forward style player, and the players they’re counting on to lead them forward aren’t Left Wingers…
He would do very well in the Leafs system I think, and he would easily provide the offense the team needs. I’d be fine with signing him to a $3.5 mill per year deal… maybe even up to a $4 mill if he can produce at a .95 ppg pace again.

Oh and to address your chicken vs. egg question
Brown is the Captain, and they brought in Smyth via a major trade… you don’t trade for a guy like smyth and then place him on your 3rd line. Frolov was the odd man out by default. Again… I’m not going to hold him responsible for that.

I imagine his asking price will go up to $4.5-$5M after Kovy signs though.
Whether he’s worth it or not is debatable, but he’ll probably get the “UFA overpayment effect”.

If he signs in the right situation, he's probably worth it.
As a LW on the Leafs, he’d be displacing Versteeg and Kulemin down the depth chart.
Or they’d move Versteeg to RW… which to me makes more sense. Play Frolov Grabovski and Versteeg as a line, and Kulemin, Bozak, and Kessel… that would look fine as a top 6 to me.

Brown is not a LW. He was moved from his natural RW spot to fill at LW because of the gaping lack of talent on LW beyond Smyth. There was a huge gap to be filled at LW and Frolov could not fill it and this necessitated the move of Brown to his wrong wing.

That’s what you want to pay a good third-line player or fifth defenceman.
Found this in Elliotte Friedman’s 30 thoughts. This is a quote from an anonymous GM re: Boogaard’s contract (1.65mil/yr). It still would’ve been very nice to get Lebda for cheaper, but at least we know that Burke is in line with other GMs (either equally crazy or equally sane).

If Kaberle and Finger are gone he could be
Beauch – Phaneuf
Gunnarsson – Komisarek
Lebda – Schenn
(whoever)
Schenn could probably move up higher than 3rd pairing… I just wanted to keep him on the RD

Beauch has a propensity to pinch and he usually screws up doing that…..Phaneuf likes the big hit and can be caught out of position, those two together is nightmarish.

Nah, keep Dion with Beauch. Dion is much better on the right side than the left. Keeps the pairings even, and you could even switch Gunnar with Lebda if you wanted.

Pair a strong DFD with Dion so he can pinch and slap wrecklessly. Phaneuf-Komisarek, Beauch-Schenn. Someone to hit, someone to pinch on both lines. Leaves Gunnarsson-Lebda pretty weak, but they’re lining up against opposition bottom 6.
That is a very weak bottom 2… I’m not saying it couldn’t work, but that lineup front-loads the physicality.
Again, RW is going to blender up these lines anyway, but it’s interesting to think about.
Ugh this all depends on both Finger and Kaberle gone though…

I think Schenn should get significantly more minutes than Lebda, if only because of the PK and PP2.

i don’t think it’s out of the question. assuming kaberle and finger are gone, he looks like our 6th if the rest of our D return to form /continue developing as we hope, but there’s always the possibility that gunnar was a flash in the pan (my goodness, please no).
or else it could be a case of 5a and 5b (or 4a, b, and c).

Nashville signs Jamie Lundmark to a one-year, two-way contract worth $600,000 at the NHL level and $105,000 at the AHL level.
I've always wanted to be a PPP Princess. You see kids, you can be anything you want to be; so long as Jay Leno doesn't also want to be that.
Good for Jamie. Glad he found a job. I wonder if he’ll hit the waiver wire during the year though.
Lots of UFAs going to be pricing themselves out of a job this summer… not nearly as many spots remaining as there are NHL-calibre players out there.

Reason for optimism
This article lists the 25 worst players in the league for taking penalties but not drawing them. Three were Leafs last year (Mayers, Primeau and Orr). Happily, only one is still a Leaf and hopefully Orr will yield some icetime to Brown this year.
More optimism: our five leading takers of minor penalties (i.e. ones likely to cause a PP against) were Orr, Poni, Mayers, Exelby and Stalberg. Rosehill also managed 11 in only 15 games. Not only should our PK be better, but hopefully we’ll be giving up less opportunities.
If our only player in the bottom 25 is our fighter, I can more than live with that. He’s always going to be down there, since his reputation precedes him. But he also kills Senators, so I really don’t care what precedes him.
Ya, it’s not his fights I had a problem with. He really did take some dumb penalties near the end of the season that had nothing to do with fighting.
